Evening Schools Historical Sketch, from the SF Muni report of 1879-80 During August, 1856, the evening schools were opened in the basement of the cathederal , corner of California and Dupont streets. They were first organized by Messrs. William HAMMILL, John SWETT, Ahira HOLMES, and James DENMAN, who volunteered their services until the Board of Education was convinved of the importance of evening school instruction. The evening schools have continually grown in public favor, until now they are the most useful prosperous schools in the city. There are at present about one thousand young men and women in attendance, under the instruction of thiry-one teachers.
