I have an elusive ancestor, Starr BALDWIN reportedly born about 1812 in New York and was in the 1840 Cuyahoga County, Cleveland, Ohio census with his wife Mary, and two young daughters Mary and Jenette. Family lore says that he "went to San Francisco and died." His wife and daughters moved to Nebraska supposedly 1855 and she was listed as a widow by 1865. Does anyone think I have any chance of finding out anything on where/when Starr Baldwin died in San Francisco? It's too early for death indexes. Are there any places online to search? Were there city directories that long ago (1855-1865)? Could I assume he was part of the gold rush?
