I saw a new database that was posted on The Vitalsearch (SF): San Francisco (CA) Marriages: 1913-15 Grooms for Premium members. I was wondering if someone who has the premium membership could look up a marriage for me. I need a marriage date for: James Reynolds to Josephine E. Johnson in 1915 (approx.) I don't have much on him except that he worked for the SFFD (in 1915 he lived at 65-68 Park, SF Josephine was born in 1882 in SF Thanks, Cathie

A couple of years ago I was trying to decide where my research should go and thought the local library would be the best place as I have lived here the longest. I talked to the librarian in the genealogical section and was given this advice which still hasn't helped me make up my mind. Unless the material is pertinent to a particular area, the library, at least here is not interested. This still presents a problem because my family is from all over even in their origins in the United States. I agree, the person might need a professional organizer or someone who is familiar with genealogy and what families come from where. It would be a shame to lose the information. Rootsweb I don't believe is the place to go, but years ago, when I received a copy of the Williams family book that my great-great grandfather had done, I allowed the local librarian in Colorado Springs to put the book on microfilm. Of course, this was before computers. Someone might scan all the document! s and p ut them on a CD or CDs and then give them to applicable genealogical librares. The LDS has the facilities to handle thousands and thousands of records and they are always available to patrons. Just a suggestion. Whether or not the 1895 8th grade exam a hoax or not I thought you would be all interested to hear another bit about it. When I got the exam I sent it to my daughter who teaches English at Thurgood Marshall High School in San Francisco. She liked it so much she printed it out and gave it to all her students and told them that if they completed the test she would give them extra credit. She teaches 3 different classes, one class is for ELD (English Language Development - what we used to call English as a second language) students. She has the lower level students who are FOB (fresh off the boat) and whose English skills are very low, a Senior Sheltered English class, which is for advanced ELD students who can read and write English but still need some help, and a Creative Writing class, which is a mix of freshmen through seniors. Out of all her students she had one student who completed the test by going online and using the Internet to get all the answers! She said it was one of her Senior Sheltered English students, a young woman who came from China! She even found the answer to how many bushels of wheat a wagon box holds! May we all be so motivated to learn! Alyce Traverso Walnut Creek, CA **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms and advice on AOL Money & Finance. I think it was in business around the turn of the Century and just beyond. Any info or links to photos would be great. Bill, In that booklet you have on the Matson Ships, does it say anything about Matson ships being frozen in the bay in Alaska about 1909 to 1920 or so??? So badly damaged he couldn't sail out with the gold he was to deliver to SF.? Have a family 'lore' but would like to check out the facts?first. Hey...... Thanks everyone.? I learn something from this list every time.? Enjoyed the photos Bill.? Hadn't seen them?before.?? We lived in Santa Cruz in 1949, Mom was with her sick mother in San Rafael during her last years until 1953.? Dad and I would go up every weekend by Hwy 1 and?pass over the Golden Gate.? On some of our trips the weather was awful and the bridge had a 'measuring stick' in the middle of the bridge to check the?swing.??I saw 12' ONE WAY swing, 24 feet total from side to side.? My Dad was in road construction and believed in those guys that built it.? He would just tell me to "hold on Sis, were going over"....? Geezz....... I was only 11 and scared ................. , well I was !???????? I don't see the 'Swing stick' any more, they must have took it down?? I thought there would be photos of it. Jim Moore of the shipyards was a president of the Society of California Pioneers.\ This would be understandable with Jim Moore in the Society.? The Bohemian Club was quit popular in the first half of the 1900s.?They were into history also and one of their goals were to place placards at historical places in SF and areas around California. ?My husband's grandfather, Charles F. Humphrey, lawyer,?was deep into this 'men only' club.? I have photos of the meeting area in the 'woods' were they had their plays.? It was the only time a woman could step foot on the Bohemian Clubs 'space'.? In the play, men would play the woman's role, full dress and all.?? They would have huge paintings on canvas as stage settings.? I have one from the 1920s? 6' x 8' hanging in?the entry hall of my 1895? 10' ceiling home.? So naming a ship 'Bohemian Club'? would match the interests of Jim Moore and the Bohemian Club.? I have added the information that you guys sent me to my notes and family tree program.? These little details does make for a more interesting genealogy. Thanks a mint. I also have some photos of Hwy 1 in San Mateo Co.?before it was a 'road'.? Single lane?Mud and all.? One is of Wardell Bluffs.? Who would I contact about getting them copies? Ever,? Beth www.Beth-website.net
I am fascinated by the Matson history. My uncle Edward Graff who lived in San Francisco was an engineer on one of the ships and served with the Merchant Marines for many years. I have heard he was in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was bombed and had just returned from breakfast on the Arizona. I follow the discussion with great interest. B. Keller (Carmel Valley)
No, the booklet is "The Story of Matson in World War II. I was a radio operator on one of them, the SS Morning Light, operated by Matson for the War Shipping Administration. We participated in the invasion of Okinawa and I saw many Kamikaze attacks on Navy vessels. While we were there FDR died. It affected the crew very much. Ernie Pyle also died, just a few miles away.
