    1. [CASANFRA] USCIS Establishes Genealogy Program
    2. Ron Filion
    3. USCIS Establishes Genealogy Program WASHINGTON — Customers can now turn to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for help in researching their family’s immigration history through the agency’s new Genealogy Program. USCIS maintains historical records documenting the arrival and naturalization of millions of immigrants who arrived in the United States since the late 1800s or and naturalized between 1906 and 1956. Until today, the process to request these records was handled through a Freedom of Information Act / Privacy Act (FOIA) request. “In many cases USCIS is the only government agency that has certain historical records that provide the missing link which genealogists or family historians need,” said Jonathan “Jock” Scharfen, USCIS’ Acting Director. The agency anticipates interest in genealogy to continue to grow. In the past four years alone, USCIS received more than 40,000 FOIA requests for historical records. The new genealogy program will create a dedicated queue for genealogists, historians and others seeking genealogical and historical records and reference services that generally require no FOIA expertise. As a result, USCIS will provide more timely responses to requests for records of deceased individuals. Individuals may submit genealogy records requests by using the new forms, G-1041 -/Genealogy Index Search Request/, and G-1041A - /Genealogy Records Request/. Both forms are available on the new USCIS Genealogy Program page at: http://www.uscis.gov/genealogy. The fees include: * Genealogy Index Search - $20 * Copy of a File on Microfilm - $20 * Copy of a Textual File Copy - $35.

    3. Hi (to all that wrote to me)! Yes I a know the books (SAN FRANCISCO'S GLEN PARK AND DIAMOND HEIGHTS) as I h donated about 9 photos with history behind them. I was thrilled to be part of it (although I wish I had been able to proof it as they wrote the wrong name on something. Oh well, I 'm just very happy I was able to share some of my great old photos. As for the person you mentioned who doesn't do email I'd love to get his snail mail address. Maybe I can show him what I have and then maybe he can tell me if he has anything of interest for me. I did not know their was a Glenn Park Historical Soc. I will have to check that out. Where my relatives lived sometimes wasn't in the heart of the Glenn Park area so I haven't found much. Michael, we wrote back and fourth a few times over the years and there are a couple people I have kept in contact over the years on that street. It's always interesting to hear the stories. The 111-113 is a home I think my gggf my have help build too! I only wish I could find more info about these old homes. I also think he built or help build the - 161/163, 153/155 (the three houses from the corner down). I would love to research the water records as this may help or if any of the home owners have done research already that would be great too. Anyway I love any info as I keep it and try to build a timeline for my relatives and what life was like for them. You can search the book for Chenery Street or my name (Cathie Schafer to find the images) It's so cool! http://books.google.com/books?id=Q9tbetmxz0AC Thanks for writing! 3. Hi, I'm still looking for any photos taken on the 100-300 block of Chenery Street. My gg parents owned: a Liquors (Bar) in the homes and also a small grocery store at 200 Chenery on the corner and lived in a half a dozen homes along there. Someone mentioned there was a feedstore at 200 Chenery and there was a photo floating around SF. Stuff like this would be of interest too. Old stories from relatives said that my Swedish ggf Albert Johnson was a great guy and inside his bar was really cool with beerstein's and lots of saloon stuff. :- ) I do check the libraries online data base every few months, any other ideas? 2. The Schafers
    3. Hi, This is response to Adrienne Stefanik's email about Mission Dorlores and records. I remembered seeing this email on line (Rootsweb) back in early 2002 and copied it because I had a boat load of relatives I was looking for. Keep in mind some of the emails, hours and info may have changed but I thought it was good info. I did try writing to Menlo Park several times and donated each time. I can't say I got much out of it but I tried. I was a bit concerned after looking many times there for two people I finally received a email from someone who took it upon them-self to help me out more not sure how she found me. She had found both names in an index. Not sure WHY the other two times the archivists couldn't find it but it was one of the KINDEST things ever. I had been searching for over ten years with every Catholic church saying they didn't have anything. Turns out it was one of my first places I had searched but never got the info on death or place of burial from the church. Don't get me wrong I LOVE SF and I LOVE doing genealogy here better than anywhere else but I do have to say dealing with the whole Catholic records thing frustrates me over and over. All I can say is keep trying, you may just find it. Turns out my relatives (a mother and daughter were buried in one place in 1880 & 1893 and then moved into a mass grave a bit later. Still can't figure that one out since there were twelve children you would have thought someone would have saved them from being dumped like that especially being Catholic! Anyway take what you want from the info below, keep in mind it's VERY hard to get records via mail. It's much better if you can go in from what I've heard. Good Luck! Cathie PS - My ggm & ggf were married in Mission Dolores in 1900, and I think my mom made her first communion there so it does have a special place in my heart! MCLAUGHLIN, JOHNSON,(CHENERY ST), DEAN, CONDON, KRAFT, COOGAN, REYNOLDS _________________________________________________________________ (Taken from Rootsweb ARchive) I got the following from an an earlier post. <All Catholic Parish records after 1900 are found in the Parish. Records from before 1900 are at St. Patricks Seminary in Menlo Park, which houses the archives. They are microfilmed. [However--I have found post-1900 records on the microfilms there for my family.} St. Patricks Seminary 320 Middlefield Rd. Menlo Park, CA 94025 (650) 328-6502 Archivist: Jeffrey Burns, PhD Hours: open M-W-F from 10:00am to 4PM. Genealogists need an appointment. "We do have materials for the 1850s, but the two oldest parishes lost their records in the 1906 Fire."> But not Mission Dolores, which did not burn. St. Patricks on Mission St. did, and there were many Irish who belonged to that parish. If you cannot get to Menlo Park to do the search yourself, if you know the date of the marriage, why not write directly to the Parish? I have requested records from 1892 from St. Boniface Church in San Francisco, and they apparently still have them there. (I wanted to get something "official" so I can prove my descendancy when I request records from Switzerland.) Mission Dolores 3321 16th St. San Francisco CA 94114 Ph: 415-621-8203 Email: mdolores@earthlink.net Note that the name is spelled dolores not delores. Important for the email. Good Luck.

    3. Hi, Chris... The first thing I notice is: If Ann were naturalized in 1848 NY, then that should be when she married a natural born or naturalized man or when her father became naturalized. Women weren't naturalized on their own until sometime around 1910-1920, as I remember. They became naturalized either when they married (due to a natural born or naturalized husband), or as children (by proxy) when Dad naturalized. In her case, being so young (8 to 12 years old), her naturalization came by proxy via her father. Have you checked Jim Faulkinbery's website for BMDs? http://www.jwfgenresearch.com/SFCall/6900-126.htm There are several J and John Kelly/Kelley entries listed, as well as Michael O'Briens. I don't see any records that go back prior to the 1870's at Jim's website for John Kelly. Here are some Michael O'Briens that died between 1880-1890 that Jim lists: O'Brien, Michael ... died in 1881 ... age 41 ... 1881D-2971O'Brien, Michael ... died in 1885 ... age 35 ... 1885D-3589O'Brien, Michael ... died in 1885 ... age 42 ... 1885D-3590O'Brien, Michael ... died in 1886 ... age 37 ... 1886D-3250O'Brien, Michael ... died in 1888 ... age 29 ... 1888D-3901O'Brien, Michael ... died in 1888 ... age 50 ... 1888D-3902O'Brien, Michael ... died in 1888 ... age 51 ... 1888D-3903O'Brien, Michael ... died in 1889 ... age 53 ... 1889D-4100 Good luck... But, no hard evidence to prove this scenario.   If this family sounds even remotely familiar to anyone, please contact me. I really would like to find out more about the Kelly line...any help is great...and anyone related to the O'Brien line, I have some family history on them too.   Thanks everyone! Christine

    3. Hi list,   I am hoping there may be another researcher out there connected to this line as I have had one heck of a time. My main "brick wall" is John Kelly...where he came from, who are is parents and siblings, what happened to him....   Anna Doud b: Bet. 1836-1840, Ire d/o Francis and Bridget Doud; Naturalized 1848, NY; Appears in the 1860 SF census with husband John Kelly b: Abt 1832 ("Irish Free State", Ireland), and daughters Jane (b:1855) and Mary (b:1857). Also listed in the household are Anna's parents Francis and Bridget Doud.   1867: Register of By 1870:  -  the parents Francis and Bridget are in Mendocino Co., CA.  - John Kelly has disappeared (can not find any records)  - Anna (Kelly) has re-married Michael O'Brien and they are found in the 1870 SF census with Jane (Kelly) 10, John (Kelly) 8, Terence (O'Brien) 3, Michael (O'Brien) 1  - Baby Mary Kelly from the 1860 census must have died as she is not in the 1870 census (can not find any records)   1880: - Michael (Mike) and Anne O'Brien are found in the 1880 SF census with Jennie (Jane Kelly) 20, John (Kelly) 18, Terry 13, Michael 11, Patrick 7, Luke 6, Margrett 4, Annie 2.   1900:  - Michael O'Brien, Sr must have died as his wife Anna is head of household in the 1890 SF census. (10 children 8 living - I assume Mary Kelly is one of her deceased children, the other is unknown...not known if the child was from the Kelly or O'Brien marriage)    - daughter Jane (Kelly) and husband Emmanuel Rodgers are living next door, son John 10  - Not sure of the location of John Kelly (son of Anne Doud, Kelly, O'Brien).     Also note: John Kelly (s/o John and Anna Kelly) was said to have had a son John who played violin for a band/orchestra in the south bay area. I have an old family photograph of this John with his violin. I also have a photo circa 1905-1910 of John Kelly, his sister Jane Kelly-Rodgers, their mother Anna Doud-Kelly-O'Brien, and Jane's son John Rodgers.   Have a picture circa 1900 of "Bridget Kelly and son John Flood"...looks like John to bet 5-10 years old, I believe the photo to be taken in front of the Rodgers on Rincon in SF. I'm not sure how this Bridget connects to my line.   Old family photographs indicate the relationship between the Doud, Kelly, O'Brien lines. I would love to find out more on the Kelly line beginning with John Kelly (b: Abt 1832) it looks as though he would have married Anna Doud about 1853. His daughter Jane was born in 1855 in California, so we know they were in California at that time. Anna indicates she was naturalized in NY in 1848, so she moved to CA between 1848 and 1855. I'm not sure if she met John Kelly in NY or CA. John Kelly, Jr was born abt 1862. So, we know John, Sr didn't die (or was still around) until at least about 1861. Civil War records indicate Kelly, John, d. 12/11/1863, PVT H 1 CAL INF, Orig Bur Los Pinos Nm, Plot: L 133. This may be my John, but no definitive evidence. Since Anna has son, Terence (O'Brien) by 1867 we can assume she was married to Michael O'Brien no later than 1866. Anna being a devout Irish Catholic, this time frame makes sense. But, no hard evidence to prove this scenario.   If this family sounds even remotely familiar to anyone, please contact me. I really would like to find out more about the Kelly line...any help is great...and anyone related to the O'Brien line, I have some family history on them too.   Thanks everyone! Christine

I am sure you would find them in there. There are quotes from headstones and there is a diagram showing where each grave is. Maybe you can have someone at the library copy the pages you need. I also believe that they are buried at http://www.missiondolores.org/mission/mission.html. Unfortunately, the records at Mission Dolores are destroyed from 1888 through 1961. I do not know if Nora Escobar´s headstone is survived. I have a photo copy in my computer file which is possibly to use regarding to match with an headstone outside or inside of building for baby section. I am wondering if anyone who is willing to go there one day for me. Few months ago, Andrew Galvan from Mission Dolores is not able to conduct for me, but he gave me some information about records history. What Mortuary do you think for babies Nora Escobar? Thank you in advance for feedback. I am looking forward hearing from you soon.
