    2. My Great Uncle William "Bill" GALLAGHER was supposed to own a bar across the street from the Call Building during this time. Family stories from his daughter say that he had a safe that was used to help protect the seaman's' money for them and that he never allowed females into the establishment. Though this is only family rumor, it is said that he sold the bar when the city forced him to permit ladies into the bar. It was also a hangout for the reporters from the Call newspaper. 2. Bill Roddy
    3. Went to a market today and saw a customer gave the cashier a $100 bill. Within a flash I was back to SF in World War II signing off a merchant ship after five months at sea. Would you believe they paid us off with $100 bills? Who had checking accounts? Each seamen received 25 to 40 of the 100s and headed off to the Embarcadero where they were many bars to quench your dry months at sea and girls anxious to make your acquaintance, if only for a short time. Needless to say many of my shipmates were pretty well broke by the time they got to the Ferry Building. Fortunately for me I was living with my mother on Fillmore and committed to helping her make ends meet. Bill

    1. [CASANFRA] Surname: Flood
    2. calisesi
    3. I am hoping someone on the list is researching the surname FLOOD.   I am looking for information on John Flood son of Bridget Flood..his father is unknown to me at this time. I have found a Bridget Flood 60 Ire. Wd in the 1910 SF census with a son John J. 30 CA single and he is listed as a fireman for the city fire dept. According to the census he would be born about 1880. I have looked at earlier census, but there's no definite matches with the 1910 census...there's always some descrepancy in information...so much so to make it a very questionable match...   I'm not sure how Bridget and her son John connect to my family, but I have a picture of her and John (he looks to be between 5 and 10 years old...which would date the photo about 1885-1890 or so.) Also, I have found a property transfer between Bridget Flood and my gg grandmother Jane Rodgers (nee Kelly).   Any information on this John or Bridget Flood would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! Christine

    3. Bill- Do you know what years the ROBINSON Circus was in business & where they performed? I have been tyring to trace my ancestor, Major ROBINSON, who at age 21 in about 1870 left home to join a circus. His parents pleaded with him not to go but Major said that joining the circus was the only thing he could do. Major ROBINSON at maturity was just 31 inches tall & weighed 31 lbs. Family legend states that he was billed as "the smallest man in the world. I have not located Major on any census records but if he was travelling with a circus he may not have been enumerated. Thanks for any help. 3. Looked at the California Death Index at http://vitals.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ca/de ath/search.cgi This looks like her sister and gives mother's maiden name: DEBELLO ANTONETTE PAGANO 04/22/1902 SILVESTRI PAGANO F CALIFORNIA SANTA CLARA 12/29/1997 The closest I could come in Ancestry.com's Calif Birth Index were not quite and do not agree with maiden name of her mother (unless Saviani is mistranscription and 1907 the year), so I'd guess she was born 1904, which the database does not include: Maria F Pagano 26 Jul 1906 Female Tufa San Francisco Emma Pasena 2 Dec 1907 Female Saviani San Francisco Ellen M Peckham 16 Oct 1906 Female Mahlke San Francisco But if they were travelling, she could have been born somewhere else, as you well know, and the 1910 census may say where. If you can afford it, you might try to get a copy of her Soc Security Application along with the supporting documents. That would/could possibly include a copy of her birth certificate. Or, with the Chronicle available for 1904, someone could try to search for 1904 Pagano Births for you. Remember also family stories about where someone is born aren't always true. My grandmother and her siblings all thought they were born in SF. But my grandmother found out when they tried to find birth certificates as an elderly adult applying for a passport, she had been born in Canada! I don't think any of them were born in SF, not given what we see in the 1891 Canadian and 1900 SF censuses! 3. Dante, Proquest and Heritage Quest are independent databases, not one and the same, but easy to get confused as the names of both end with "quest". Proquest, I believe, is newspapers (or mostly so), and Heritage Quest is other historical documents, including census records, Freedman's bank, PERSI, etc. With regards to the dropdown box, I believe the problem many of us are having is due to SFPL (and possibly other libraries as well) not updating their database listings to either have a general category of Historical Newspapers, or a specific entry on their Database page for the SF Chronical. Maybe they haven't had a chance to do that. Once that happens, there should be less confusion for all. Once you get to a search page at Proquest, after choosing some other Proquest Newspaper database, one of the options includes a dropdown box for Databases, and hidden in that are the historical SF Chronicle, where one would never expect to find it on a page only listing other databases as options in the text (as far as I could see), although the Chronicle is buried in that dropdown box! Again, you cannot get to that Search screen unless you have signed in with a valid SFPL card number after choosing a database from the main database page or doing something else on the site requiring signing in. 3. Hi, Marcus... I did a search for Circus-related information and wasn't able to find anything. However, I found some other information which may be helpful in finding someone who may have some information about her. I'm not certain what you may or may not know of her, however, here's what I was able to find: Social Security Death Index Name: Emily Minton Birth: 26 Oct 1905 Death: Jan 1977 - Stateline, Douglas, Nevada, United States of America Civil: Alabama Other: Stateline, Douglas, Nevada, United States of America It appears she may have had a son: California Birth Index, 1905-1995 Name: Robert Burgess Minton Birth Date: 5 Mar 1932 Gender: Male Mother's Maiden Name: Pagano Birth County: San Francisco She is documented in all available censuses from her birth, and since she was under the name Pagano in the 1930 census, she may have married between the time of the census and the birth of Robert (assuming this is her son). And, possibly in San Francisco, as she is living in San Francisco AND Robert was born there also. I am emailing censuses and other information regarding her (possible) son separately to you. Good luck on your search... 3. My great great uncle owned and operated the Sherman Circus. Their home was in Pacheco in Contra Costa County although they traveled everywhere. I think one of the flyers I have has them in the San Francisco area. There is a circus museum in TX and I believe one more elsewhere. I will write my friend who helped me with my research and find out the contact information and I will get back to you with that. --- On Wed, 8/20/08, mflansburg@comcast.net <mflansburg@comcast.net> wrote: From: mflansburg@comcast.net <mflansburg@comcast.net> Subject: [CASANFRA] Circus Genealogy???
