    3. Hello Sally.... Most of the first names are listed only as initials...there are exceptions. Of the 9 Leonards, only one first name appears...that is BYRON. I will list the initials for you and you tell me if any might be yours: Mrs. & Child B. BYRON G.H. J.H. J.T. S.C. W.R. Of those, only the two with Js were on the same ship. 3. Hello Marie... Remember what the author said...given names were reduced to initials..... There are the following: HARRISON, A.M., ..ship OREGON,steamer, from Panama. Arrived July 20,1850. SHARP/E: SHARPE, H:...ship MONUMENTAL CITY..steamer..from San Juan del Sur, Nicaraqua. Arrived, May 14, 1852 in san Diego, and left for San Francisco the next day. There was a HENRY SHARP (breaking the tradition of only initials...:) ), but not Harold. BARRERE....none found. There is a Mr. BARRIERE and he has NO initials or first name. Hope this helps... 1. [CASANFRA] San Francisco Ship Passenger Lists
    2. Judie Cook
    3. Hello Listers.... I have in my possession SAN FRANCISCO SHIP PASSENGER LISTS, VOLUME 1 by Louis J. Rasmussen. The author's foreward reads: This volume is the first in a series of volumes which will reflect the names of passengers arriving by vessels in the Port of San Francisco during the period of 1850 to 1875. All volumes are fully indexed and a master index volume will be published. This undertaking will not concern itself with the histories of various ship lines or the history of any individual vessel. Instead, the author will attempt to concentrate on the magical growth of California and the West through the medium of ship passenger lists. As San Francisco was the main entry port in the settlement of the West the names contained in the volumes will number in the thousands. Unfortunately, the original government records of entry were destroyed by fire. To reconstruct arrivals it has been necessary to revert to contemporary sources such as newspaper lists, journals, etc. The accuracy of the lists is predicated upon the information furnished in t he respective source. In absence of any previous work of this nature, covering this period, the author offers this as a contribution to Western History. There are some apparent weaknesses in the lists....such as the practice of printing only given name initials by the early reporters and the failure to indicate age, sex, or station of life. Never the less, general as the lists may appear, it is possible they might provide leads to those concerned with historical research. Before utilizing the lists, it is important to read "Reference Points" and "key to abbreviations & Symbols". If you have read this far, congratulations....and if you have any reason to believe that one of yours MIGHT be in this VOL> 1, I will be happy to check for you. OR, if you know the name of the ship he or she came over on, he has listed the ships in an index as well. Regards, Judie

Donovan" and "California senate" and found a pdf page from Frank C. Merritt's "History of Alameda County, California", which had a biography for his son Augustin. It says, in part: "Michael J. Donovan, father of Augustin Donovan of this review, attended Georgetown University and afterward pursued a law course in the Hastings Law School of San Francisco, being a member of the first class of that institution, graduated in 1881. While he became an attorney, he also engaged in various other lines of business, having ranch property and mining interests, his last days being spent upon his ranch in Kings county, where he passed away in 1898, aged fifty- three years. He long figured prominently in public affairs and was elected to the state senate when but twenty-four years of age..." Looks like Kings county would be a promising place to look next. Hope this helps a bit. Best regards, Pam Pamela Storm pam@sfgenealogy.com SFGenealogy.com www.sfgenealogy.com

    1. [CASANFRA] SF German Women's Organizations
    2. Barb C
    3. Hi! I see the new entry at SFGenealogy for Norddeutscher Verein, Silver Anniversary 1874 - 1899 by Kari Schutty. There was a women's version of this organization, Nord Deutscher FRAUEN Verein, that my GGM Marie Behnemann Hollwegs and her daughters were members of, according to their obituaries. I've been in contact the past few months with the current President of another SF German women's organization who tells me that my GGM's organization has been no longer for quite some time. She also tells me there's a book in the SF Library that calendars all the German (women's) organizations on a yearly basis. Evidently this was printed by an SF German publisher. I've been unable to find much on the Internet about Norddeutscher Frauen Verein nor Norddeutscher Verein. There is a paragraph or so in SFGenealogy briefly describing Norddeutscher Frauen Verein, and that's all I've been able to find anywhere online. I checked the new Norddeutscher Verein entry and did not see my GGF John Hollwegs as a member. Does anyone have any ideas or information on how I might obtain membership information for Norddeutscher Frauen Verein from its inception in 1874 to its closure (whenever that was)? Thanks... 3. John Joseph McGough died in San Francisco Aug. 22, 1941. He died of a Fractured Skull. I am trying to determine what happened to cause this injury. At the time of his death he and his wife Mary Agnes resided at 35 Rauch St, SF. He was 70 at the time of his death, born in Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY to Owen McGough, an Irish Immigrant. Perhaps there is a news item in one of the SF newspapers regarding the cause of John McGough's death. He and wife are buried in Holy Cross Cem., in Colma. In 1894 John McGough (known as Jack) was involved in an attempted Murder in Troy. He shot William Ross, who survived. Bat Shea, a close friend of John, supposedly shot Robert Ross who died at the scene. Jack Casey, an Attorney and Writer in Troy, NY wrote a book about the crime, "The Trial of Bat Shea". On Election day that year the ballot boxes were stuffed to keep the Irish Catholic Democrats in office. The Protestant vigilantes tried to stop the voting fraus and a riot occurred. It's a fascinating tale, factual. Bat was executed at Dannemora, Clinton Co Prison in 1896 and it was proven before the execution that he was Innocent of the crime. John McGough was released from Prison about 1907. He married his sweetheart Mary Agnes Guinan in Troy, they had a child Owen John b. in Troy, 1909 who died in San Francisco Aug. 22, 2003. SF Public Lib. looked for an obituary for him in the two major newspapers there but there was none. I learned through correpondance with Holy Cross Cem., that his wife was Lillian McGough, who resided at 911 Lincoln Way, SF 94122, at the time of her husband's death. I will gladly pay a researcher to assist me. Deanna Palatine Bridge, NY

    3. Jim... I'm sending the April 3, 1930 SF Census page where Neil is located by separate. In it, he is just shy of his first birthday and shown as 11/12 months old. His parents were Peter and Bridget. Bridget may have been a Cassidy, as Peter has a brother-in-law, Timothy Cassidy, living with them at 142 Diamond Street. Peter, Bridget, son Connie (probably Conner?), and Timothy were all born in Ireland. Peter is a street car conductor; Timothy a laborer in a coal yard. I'm not sure if Peter and Bridget were naturalized, but they're shown as having submitted papers in 1923, Timothy submitting in 1927. Hope this helps your niece...
