    3. Hi Deanna, I found several articles on www.newspaperarchive.com about the shooting. If you would like one or more of these just let me know. I'd be happy to download and email to you. So far, nothing about his death/injury or about his wife or son. But I'll keep looking. Jon -----Original Message----- From: casanfra-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:casanfra-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Deanna Smith Sent: Friday, August 29, 2008 7:44 PM To: casanfra@rootsweb.com Subject: [CASANFRA] Newspaper article-McGough John Joseph McGough died in San Francisco Aug. 22, 1941. He died of a Fractured Skull. I am trying to determine what happened to cause this injury. At the time of his death he and his wife Mary Agnes resided at 35 Rauch St, SF. He was 70 at the time of his death, born in Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY to Owen McGough, an Irish Immigrant. Perhaps there is a news item in one of the SF newspapers regarding the cause of John McGough's death. He and wife are buried in Holy Cross Cem., in Colma. In 1894 John McGough (known as Jack) was involved in an attempted Murder in Troy. He shot William Ross, who survived. Bat Shea, a close friend of John, supposedly shot Robert Ross who died at the scene. Jack Casey, an Attorney and Writer in Troy, NY wrote a book about the crime, "The Trial of Bat Shea". On Election day that year the ballot boxes were stuffed to keep the Irish Catholic Democrats in office. The Protestant vigilantes tried to stop the voting fraus and a riot occurred. It's a fascinating tale, factual. Bat was executed at Dannemora, Clinton Co Prison in 1896 and it was proven before the execution that he was Innocent of the crime. John McGough was released from Prison about 1907. He married his sweetheart Mary Agnes Guinan in Troy, they had a child Owen John b. in Troy, 1909 who died in San Francisco Aug. 22, 2003. SF Public Lib. looked for an obituary for him in the two major newspapers there but there was none. I learned through correpondance with Holy Cross Cem., that his wife was Lillian McGough, who resided at 911 Lincoln Way, SF 94122, at the time of her husband's death. I will gladly pay a researcher to assist me. 1. [CASANFRA] LITTLEFIELD Family photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Charles LITTLEFIELD which was taken at the Vaughan's Studio in San Francisco, California. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's with Charles appearing to be about 1 year old at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding this family: Charles V. LITTLEFIELD b. 5 Feb 1878 in San Francisco, CA to parents Sheldon E. LITTLEFIELD (b. 18 Feb 1834 in Boxboro, MA) and Nancy SOUTHWOOD (b. 13 Jun 1853 in Wyoming Territory during covered wagon trip to CA). Charles died on 12 Feb 1879 in San Francisco, CA. The couple had a total of 10 children including, Sheldon Alfred; Francis Tyler; Mamie; Eva Harriet; Charles V.; Lillian Ellen; Arthur L.; Joyce F.; Maude Alice; and George Taylor LITTLEFIELD all born in San Francisco except the last child George born in Anaheim, CA between 1871 and 1898. I am hoping to locate someone from this LITTLEFIELD Family so that this precious old photograph can be returned to the care of this family. If you are a member of the family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. I know you asked about high schools, but when I tried googling "P.R.C.A san-francisco" (without the quotes), I came up with a lot of hits about the Rodeo, cowboys, bull riding. Eliminating those with the word "rodeo" gave me, among other things a P.R.C.A hat, as I recall. Was he into the rodeo or horses at all? A number of hits talk about Rodeo as a high school sport! According to wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_rodeo, though, it seems that PRCA didn't get used for that until 1945, so this may be totally off base: "In 1945, the Cowboy Turtles Association changed their name to the Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA) which later in 1975 changed to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA)." 3. Hi Judie, I have always had this old family story saying my gggm fled the Civil War because she was caught spying and was imprisoned and then escaped via help of (General Grant or Lee's wife or wife's sister . She helped them by putting my gggm and children under her skirt and loaded them on a boat that took them down the Mississippi from St. Louis, then they took a ship to Panama on to SF by 1868. I have been searching for Ship Records for the window of 1863-1868 Panama to SF for along time. It sounds like your book index may have some of these names. I would love to know if my family maybe in this book. Elizabeth McLaughlin (may have been Rachel Elizabeth) - Her maiden name was "Scranton" John L. McLaughlin Two little girls: Mary Matilda McLaughlin and Emma or Emily C. McLaughlin (she was a baby) There maybe a chance Elizabeth was with her girls with out her husband. Any combo I'd me interested in! I know it's a common name. John was NOT a Captain as I have found lot's of McLaughlin Captains. Thanks, Cathie

I have in my possession SAN FRANCISCO SHIP PASSENGER LISTS, VOLUME 1 by Louis J. Rasmussen. The author's foreward reads: This volume is the first in a series of volumes which will reflect the names of passengers arriving by vessels in the Port of San Francisco during the period of 1850 to 1875. All volumes are fully indexed and a master index volume will be published. This undertaking will not concern itself with the histories of various ship lines or the history of any individual vessel. Instead, the author will attempt to concentrate on the magical growth of California and the West through the medium of ship passenger lists. As San Francisco was the main entry port in the settlement of the West the names contained in the volumes will number in the thousands. Unfortunately, the original government records of entry were destroyed by fire. To reconstruct arrivals it has been necessary to revert to contemporary sources such as newspaper lists, journals, etc. The accuracy of the lists is predicated upon the information furnished in t he respective source. In absence of any previous work of this nature, covering this period, the author offers this as a contribution to Western History. There are some apparent weaknesses in the lists....such as the practice of printing only given name initials by the early reporters and the failure to indicate age, sex, or station of life. Never the less, general as the lists may appear, it is possible they might provide leads to those concerned with historical research. Before utilizing the lists, it is important to read "Reference Points" and "key to abbreviations & Symbols". If you have read this far, congratulations....and if you have any reason to believe that one of yours MIGHT be in this VOL> 1, I will be happy to check for you. OR, if you know the name of the ship he or she came over on, he has listed the ships in an index as well.
