It would help if you posted the year she died, if you know, and her mother's maiden name. We can't assume she was born in SF per se, and there are a number of Ruth Johnson's born around then in Calfornia, none with middle initial V. that I could find. Hello, I was wondering if anyone had any info on were my gmother who was born in 1906 and lived on Chenery Street would have gone to get Art lessons or Art School as a teenager most likely during the 1915-1935 time period. Her name was Ruth V. Johnson. She had 10 other siblings so I don't think they had a lot of money. Her father ran a Saloon/liquors and mother had a small grocery store on Chenery so they most likely were just getting by! I have her with her mother and sibling living at: Census: 1920 US Census 13 years old 3214 A Mission Street San Francisco, CA 1930 US Census 20 years old 278 29th Street San Francisco, CA San Francisco City Directory 1925 1800 Sutter Waitress She marries by 1937 to Irving Condon and she didn't do much after that and then she died. Any ideas were she would have furthered her talent. She died when my mom was only five so I never got some of those questions answered! My mom always said her mother went to an art school for a while for lessons. I know she could draw very well and since all the girls in my family seem to have this artistic talent I'm just curious. Thanks, Cathie

You can check the California Death Index after free registration at Vital Search: http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com/gen/ca/_vitals/cadeathm.htm There were 8 Joseph Becks listed as passing away in California between 1905-1929, and two of them passed away in San Francisco in the 1920's. One was age 42 when he passed away in 1923, the other was age 56 at his passing, I think it reads January 19, 1926, the image is difficult to read. One of your best bets might be to get a copy of the 1926 death certificate from the County if you think that might be him, which will give the residence at time of death and name of informant and spouse. It also usually gives length of residence and might provide clues as to when they moved to California. Also where he was buried, then you could check with the cemetary to see if wife was buried in a plot next to him and possibly get her dates of birth and death. Or maybe someone can find his obituary in the SF Chronicle. If the obit gives married names of daughters, then you could search the Birth Index for possible names of their children. Hello Holger, I have found a Joseph and Marie Beck in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 San Francisco census. You mention Joseph died in 1926 so perhaps this is the wrong family. Joseph is a barber working in his own shop. In the 1910 census they are listed with children Konrad, Heinrich and Thelpa. I saved the images of the census records. If you think this might be the correct family I would be happy to send the images to you by email. Let me know. I also searched www.newspaperarchive.com but did not find a match. Specifically, what information are you looking for? When she died? Where she was born? When she immigrated to the U.S.? I received this email today from London. Wasn't there a discussion recently of Red Rock Hill? I did not save them, but it would be great if you could help the Saroyan Festival. Bill _____ From: snakebit theatricals [mailto:melcookis@googlemail.com] Sent: Saturday, September 20, 2008 4:59 PM To: billroddy@cox.net Subject: san fran info Hello, Mr. Roddy, I am an American theatre director working in London, currently directing a production of "The Beautiful People" for the William Saroyan centenary festival here at the Finborough Theatre. The play is set in 1941, in "an old house on Red Rock Hill, near Quintara Woods in the Sunset District of San Francisco." I came across your wonderful website whilst googling for images of the time, and as you seem an expert on the area, I thought I might ask you for any additional images or information you might have on the city at the time. Any info on Red Rock Hill would be especially helpful; what sort of houses were there, how developed it was, how far from the city centre, etc. Certainly any postcards or maps from 1941 would be incredibly useful. The play is so specific to the time and the place; the more information I can give the cast and audience, the better. Thank you! Mel. Cook -- Snakebit Theatricals Parliament Hill, NW3 07788 642 641
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Theresa DICKES which was taken at the Savoy Studio in San Francisco, California. The photograph was taken in the early 1900's with Theresa appearing to be in her teens or 20's at the time it was taken. In addition to her name, someone has written "48 Castro, San Francisco" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I was able to find the family in census records as follows: 1900 census of San Francisco, CA: Cora DICKES, age 37, born Dec 1863, a widow, 2 children/2 living, born CA, parents born IL/NC Pauline T. Can you order a death cert if you are not a family member? this would be in Kentucky.
Every state and county has its own rules, but I think it also depends on how long ago the person passed away, and the Freedom of Information Act. I have found that reading the official website for any given county or state is not always an accurate indicator of the rules, either. I believe it is best to call the Vital Records Office that is involved, which you usually need to do anyhow to confirm current fees, and sometimes you might reach someone who can actually check their indices. You could use the following page as a starting point: http://statearchives.us/public/kentucky.htm Links for public records resources for all states is at: http://statearchives.us/public I also like Joe Beine's site as a resource for available death records for each state: http://www.deathindexes.com On 9/18/08, Gail Harms <gailharms@charter.net> wrote: > Can you order a death cert if you are not a family member? this would be in > Kentucky.
