I took a photo of the San Francisco skyline from the Nurses Dorm across from St. Mary's Hospital in 1956. From Hayes and Schrader. The skyline has changed since then. Can anyone identify the tall buildings on the skyline? The large red brick building is still there. I seem to remember it was a school, but not which one. What is it now? My brother posted it on Shorpy, and you can see it here: http://www.shorpy.com/node/4586 Thanks, "rwalker"
Since the 1900 census asked both age and month/year of birth it would seem reasonable to guess that it was more accurate than other censuses. Does anyone know (1) why month and year were included for this single time and (2) was the result more accurate, particularly on month? Specifically did he Census Bureau ever commission a study on the accuracy of the birth data or provide a rationale for the inclusion and then abandonment of the month and year question?

My great grandfather Antonio F Escobar probably shipped with his family to Sacramento or Port Costa, California from San Francisco in between from 1890 to 1893. I received the letter from San Francisco Public Library that the staffs could not research for me. One of them told me that I have to come down there. It is unfortunate for me because I am in Washington State. I am hoping if anyone who is willing to look up in water records at San Francisco Public Library. I am happy to pay at any costs for research, parking, etc. I do appreciate your help. Thank you very much. Adrienne Reply:- What did you need to be looked up in the water record? I may be going to the SF Pub Library next week. I planned to find out about the water records for our family addresses in the early 1900s. Can't promise for sure, don't know how long it will take because I don't know how it is all organized. "rwalker"

Geez - just answered my own question. They were actually built out as offices. The original architects, James & Merritt Reid occupied the 18th floor. I believe the water records are maintained by the Public Works Dept and are by address. About 4 years ago I visited and they were most helpful. But knowing the address is essential for any volunteer's success. --- On Thu, 10/2/08, A. Stefanik <hattula1902@yahoo.com> wrote: From: A. Hello Barb Thank you for all the information in all your emails. I will go through it later in the day, when I have finished my farm work!! Then I will respond more fully. I will have time to do it while listening to the Vancouver Giants' hockey through my computer Thanks again. Mike
I have the death of Edith M GWYNN, nee REDFERN, in San Francisco County in 1940. Is anyone able to tell me anything about her please? A death notice and/or obit would be really useful in telling me of her family. I know nothing of her marriage or her husband and so her family is totally unknown too. Thanks Mike in Whakatane NZ
Mike... I've found George's Border Crossing on the SS Arabic, sailing from Liverpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia, 03 May 1913. It states his destination as Edmunton, Alberta. I'll send this under separate cover also. Mike... I've also found probably Edith's parents' (probably first) immigration from Canada in 09 May 1908. There are other listings for George Redfern in the Canadian Censuses (in 1891 he is in Victoria, BC) and other data. I am unable to get those for you, as I don't subscribe to that part of Ancestry.com. I will send their 1908 immigration under separate cover to you. Maybe someone in this list, who subscribes to the 'World' part of Ancestry.com, would be kind enough to send you the Canadian items, etc. I see also where the family may have emigrated from England to Canada, where George was born. Hope this helps... Mike... Here's some basic information found at Ancestry.com: Name: Edith Gwynn Social Security #: 543107927 Sex: FEMALE Birth Date: 16 Apr 1917 Birthplace: Washington Death Date: 22 Jun 1940 Death Place: San Francisco Mother's Maiden Name: Anderson FATHER'S SURNAME: Redfern According to the 1920 Census (taken Jan. 8 & 9), in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, George and Edith were her parents. They had 2 other children at that time, both sons, Kenneth G. (Age 12) and Charles H.(Age 10). It appears they all came from Canada in 1913; Edith was born in Washington State. She is 2 years, 8 months old, which would be confirmation of the April 1917 birth date above. In the 1930 Census, they are all still in Portland. Mother Edith's birth place is New Zealand in this census. I'm sending these censuses as attachments to you directly as we are unable to do so within the listing system. I'll do a little more digging in the meantime. Hope this helps... I tried posting this, and didn't see it. I realized that I was not subscribed to the list. Now I am. My Uncle Albert who was born in 1908 managed to get his mother to finance a semester of art training at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. It is listed in the San Francisco City Directory of 1922. Here is a link to the page: http://www.distantcousin.com/Directories/CA/SanFrancisco/1922/Pages.asp?Page=1994 It will give you the address at that time. In looking through the directory quickly, I could not find any other art school. After one semester my Uncle was able to get an apprenticeship with a company preparing wood blocks for printing. Hope this helps. "rwalker"

Hello Cohens, Sorry I didn't add to many vitals because I thought what year she was born was more important since I know where she was born and and know a lot about her family from Census and City Directories. I was sort of thinking it wouldn't matter for what art school she may have gone to. But if that will help here's more info: Ruth Veronica Johnson b. SF, CA in CA to Albert & Mary Johnson (they are mentioned in the Glenn Park Book on history of Chenery Street. There is a picture on page 102 of her in kindergarten holding a Teddy Bear. There are other photos on page 88, 92, 93 of her sisters, parents and grandparents. She lived most of her young ife at 200 Chenery, but her father died in 1912 so moved over to 68 Park in 1915. Like I mentioned earlier she marries Irving Condon in 1937, at Mission Dolores. She died in SF in 1945. I do have a lot of info on her parents! Although I'm always willing to read or find more! I hope that helps! Most of the art I have seen is pen and ink and water colors if that helps.
