This was in Matthew Brady's Column of July 2001. In it he mentions, a, John Eichner: Rats and mice didn't stand a chance in he warehouses on the docks and in the downtown businesses of San Francisco in the 1890s, thanks to John Eichner, a retired butcher who live at 8 Ashburton Place, a small court just off the east side of Grant Avenue between Post and Sutter Streets. In his very old shanty - "Came from the North as early as '46." he would say - he raised cats and trained them for a while. Then he placed them wherever their services were necessary, charging so much a month to take car of them. He set out ech morning with huge basket full of boiled mutton and a can of milk for his charges, which in 1898 numbered form 150 to 200. His star was a yellow and white tabby, the mother of 40 kittens which were scattered all over the city and had the reputation of being good ratters. Eichner always gave credit for his success to the horseshoe hanging over his door. A few notes: 1) I know nothing more that this. 2) The last time I checked he did not have a e-mail address. 3) So to get hold of him you can e-mail the paper at <letters@sfindependent.com> or call them at 415 826 1100 4) As to how much help he will be I do not know. For a number of months ago I gave him some informantion, one of them being on a story that he had ran with some more information on it, which a ran and did not either mention where he got or thank me. The other two he did run, so again how much help he will be I DO NOT KNOW. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? N. Gray merged some time ago with Halstead & Co. It is now called Halstead N. Gray and is located on Sutter Street. They keep funeral records not only for N. Gray and Halstead & Co., but also for Godeau Funeral Home, Martin & Brown Funeral Directors, Quock Fook Sang Mortuary, and a few other companies. You can find info on the company - as well as directions on how to request funeral records searches - at http://www.halstedngray.com/. --- Karen Venable <karenvenable@bigfoot.com> wrote: > I'm trying to find out if the records of the N. I'm trying to find out if the records of the N. Gray & Co. (Funeral Director) are still available. The company isn't listed in current San Francisco phone records. Were they absorbed by another company? If so, which one? In 1912 the company was located at 2198 Geary Street and in 1930 it was at 1545 Divisadero Street Any help will be appreciated; thanks. Dear Listers, In trying to assemble family information about the widow Clara Garesché in San Francisco in 1890, I find that she and her son Louis lived at 128 Eighteenth Street. What would have been the Catholic Parish for that address at that time? Early in 1891 she remarried, so I am hoping the Church will have the record of that marriage. We do not know her husband's name, only that it was "Russian sounding." In April, a few weeks after the marriage, she died a "mysterious death," and neither the husband, her money or her silver were ever seen again. Any help gratefully received, Betty Garesché Torno St. Louis, MO

Hi there I am looking for information on JAMES ARTHUR NELSON III, born about 1945 in California. He lived in REDWOOD CITY at the time of his father's death in 1976 (see obituary below) If memory serves me correct he grew up with his parents James and Iris in Hillsboro, just outside San Fransisco. His grandmother FLORENCE (MCANNELL) NELSON was sister to my grandmother ELLEN ANN (MCCANNELL) DAVIS. His father and my father Cyril Malcolm were first cousins and friends. The Nelson family often came to Vancouver, BC, Canada to visit us and we in turn went to San Fransisco to visit them. I have much information to share. Thanks for reading this. Wow.. that death records file would be wonderful! Let me know what I can do to help free the records up. I have been told that the death records are not considered medical records, and that we should not have a problem getting these records. Even the medical records should be available, at least for those over 100 years old. Don't need the med records, just that death list.. would let us find where these folks were buried. Hi all, Here is what I just received from one of the archivists at the State Archives. I will follow up with the State Archivist relative to the doctor-patient confidientiality status dying with the patient to see if we can't get some of the records freed up. I hope to ask him to seek an Attorney General opinion in the matter. Note, they do have a Register of Deaths from 1862 to 1921. Boy, that would sure help me! I am trying to trace any descendants of my uncle Michael E. Mcdonald who were born in Cook County, Illinois and probably moved to California. My uncle Michael E. McDonald died in Chicago in November 1952 and at that time was living in S. Aberdeen St. Chicago. Michael E. had five sons - Thomas, Michael, Walter, William and John Joseph. John Joseph was a T/Sgt. in the 306th Infantry Regiment and the 77th Infantry Division and was killed in action in the Phillipines in December 1944. John Joseph was married to an Elizabeth Doyle and had a son - John Dennis - early 1944. Elizabeth subsequenty remarried to a James Larkin. All of the five sons served in the U.S. Forces during the war. The wife of Michael E. was a Mary Regan and she died in May 1963 in Chicago. The death notice of Michael E. showed that he had eight grandchildren (one was John Dennis the son of John Joseph). When his wife Mary (Regan) died in 1963 she had ten grandchildren. I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of this branch of my family and would respond to any information. I could also provide a significant amount of information to any member of my family about their origins in County Mayo Ireland Michael Kevin McDonald Adelaide, AUSTRALIA markmcd@senet.com.au
Hi Heather... I live here in California in one of the Mother Lode counties. Of all of the sites we've visited, this one is probably the most comprehensive for someone who is relatively unfamiliar with the Gold Rush history. There is an item on the index for genealogy research. Good luck... Linda Emerson Twain Harte, CA http://malakoff.com/goldcountry/history.htm
