    1. [CASANFRA] VANGUNDY Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Ruth VANGUNDY taken at the Bushnell Studio in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Jose, or Oakland, California. The photo was probably taken in the 1920's and Ruth appears to be about 12 years of age at the time. On the back of the photograph it states that she is the daughter of Grant VANGUNDY and the niece of Millie NEWLOVE. I'm hoping to find someone in this family who would like to have the photograph back in its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [CASANFRA] Fw: [INPCRP] Petition is on-line and ready for distribution
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Greetings, I am forwarding this message to my group called "Cemetery Resources." I hope you will take the time to learn about the problems the people in Indiana are having with "portable" cemeteries. Their state laws are enabling development to play checkers with their cemeteries by allowing them to move cemeteries almost at will. Please take the time to review the petition Lois Mauk has included. I will be having the members of our commission sign the petition and am planning a personal letter to the Indiana representative indicated on the petition. For those who don't know, California's laws provide that when cemeteries are relocated there must be an effort to notify any potential next of kin, either through personal correspondence or by publishing notice in the newspaper. Apparently Indiana does not. Many of the pioneers who rest in California's historic cemeteries are natives of Indiana. Just as we are trying to protect their final resting places, some good people in Indiana are trying to do the same for our pioneer's ancestors in their state. I encourage you all to collect signatures on a copy of this petition and let the representatives in Indiana know that the eyes and "monitors" of California are watching. This nation's historic cemeteries are jeopardized daily. Yesterday on CNN you may have seen the story of the historic cemetery that is being asked to relocated so they may extend the runway at O'Hare airport in Chicago. It's time to take a stand and tell our respective government officials that there is a reason they are called Final Resting Places. Thank you in advance for considering this request. 3. My G-Grandparents, Milton & Mariah Boulden Left Joplin, MO in about 1921 or 22 and headed west, we think, with their Granddaughter, Lillian that they had raised from an infant she would have been 21 or 22 at the time and went to the San Francisco area there are no records here as to where they went. But Lillian lived, was married, had a family and died in the SF area. So her grand parents may have lived in that area as well. Could someone tell me how I may be able to find out from some of the City Directories or other sources there. Or even possibly Obits from local papers. Any help will be appreciated. I live in MO and don't have any way to check this out. Thanks Larry Bouldin

    1. RE: [CASANFRA] 1880 census
    2. Whoa what a great question! We have info which states: "SOUNDEX FACTS - 1880 - Since Social Security people were only interested in people who would turn 65 after the system became operative, they only had to consider people born after 1870. Since people born prior to 1870 would be 65 before the system started, they could be IGNORED. Therefore, all states were SOUNDEXED in 1880, but only FAMILIES CONTAINING CHILDREN 10 YEARS OLD AND YOUNGER. HOWEVER!!!!!! The new set of 53 CD's "1880 United States Census and National Index" that the LDS just released (several of us have copies) seems to included these families!!!! Can I look for someone for you? 2. George Rushton
    3. This was in Matthew Brady's Column of July 17 2001. In it he mentions a Thomas Kytka; If a lawyer grew suspicious as he examined a will in 1897 he would seek help from Theodore Kytak, a local artist and expect in microphotography and handwriting who had just invented a remarkable camera that could magnify writing 3,600 times. The telescopic part, which was made up of 12 sections, or bellows, was 15 feet long when extended to its full capacity. It was connected by a black rubber clothe with an adjoining darkroom. Kytka explained to the curious that his new camera was indispensable in showing whether an erasure of any sort had been made on a document. A few notes: 1) I know nothing more that this. 2) The last time I checked he did not have a e-mail address. 3) So to get hold of him you can e-mail the paper at <letters@sfindependent.com> or call them at 415 826 1100 4) As to how much help he will be I do not know. 2. George Rushton
    3. This was in Matthew Brady's Column of July 17 2001. In it he mentions John Wieland and William Cosbie When the John Wieland Brewing Company, at 228 Mission Street, needed a new harness in 1888 for the six splendid stallions that pulled one of its wagons, it called on William Cosbis, who had been manufacturing leather yokes in San Francisco Since 1864. At a cost of $1,500 Cosbie delivered a thing of beauty, decorated with 160 silver letters, 50 beer-barrel ornaments, and 8.500 silver-headed studs. The six pairs of hames, trimmed with miniature silver kegs, were hung with handsome bearskins. 1. [CASANFRA] San Francisco Independent Tuesday 10 July 2001 Matthew Brady Column/McCLEVER & THOMSON
    2. George Rushton
    3. This was in Matthew Brady's Column of July 2001. In it he mentions both a A McClever and a Samuel Thompkins; Late on a Sunday afternoon in July 1895 a ribbon of fog was winding itself around the crest of Strawberry Hill, in Golden Gate Park, and the band had just taken up a a spirited march when suddenly a cyclist in white jacket and cap, with whiskers fluttering over each shoulder, burst onto the music concourse and pedaled merrily past a startled audience of thousands. The madcap, who later claimed to be "A McClever," was a member of a cycling club, and there were those who believed that he had been inspired by the wheelmen to test the legality of the park regulation that prohibited such behavior while the musicians were playing. A city policeman raided his club an yelled at the whiskered rider to halt. McClever did nothing of the kind; instead, he doffed his cap, laughed impertinently, and continued on his way. Samuel Thompson, captain of the Park Police, was astride his horse near the fern grotto. With lariat in hand, the famous vaquero in blue took off after the miscreant, crying, "Stop, or I'll will rope you!" For several hundred yard the race was run at a furious clip. then the capitan whirled his lariat three or four times around his head and the next instant a noose yanked th scorcher from his machine, to be relocated to the lockup in the basement of City Hall.
    3. This was in Matthew Brady's Column of July 2001. In it he mentions Samuel Hammond; A butcher named Samuel Hammond, with a shop at 33 Fourth Street, took up a new hobby in 1889, and six years later 550 varieties of cacti were growing in the yard and greenhouses behind his modest brown house at 2033 Howard Street. Upon entering the yard one friend said that he fancied himself in the dried-up bed of an ocean, and all the bulbous, spiny and star-like forms were sea creatures. Hammond warned his guest that the cacti had been known to send their spines through the sole of a thick work boot and might even "jump at you if you come too close" A few notes: 1) I know nothing more that this. 2) The last time I checked he did not have a e-mail address. 3) So to get hold of him you can e-mail the paper at <letters@sfindependent.com> or call them at 415 826 1100 4) As to how much help he will be I do not know.
