Hello list, A real nice person on this list found my KERR family in the 1900 census. I've been looking for any records availble trying to find out more about my great granduncle, "Ignatius A. Kerr". He was married to Martha Frances Banachowshi when he died at the age of 47 on November 11, 1932. The 1900 census record finally gave his correct age. He was born on August 1, 1885 in San Francisco. I found Ignatius Kerr twice in old directories. He was listed twice in 1917, apparently trying to advertise his occupation as a "marine engineer". He also appears in 1913 living at his father, Mathew Kerr's house on 16th Street. Ignatius Kerr is not listed in the 1919 Directory and it just occurred to me that he too may have joined WWI with my grandfather. However, was the age of 33 too old to join the U.S. Army? My grandfather was discharged from the U.S. Army as a totally disabled veteran in January of 1919. Ignatius Kerr died of an condition/illness that had a date of onset "prior to 1920" according to his death certificate. I am now wondering - was he too in WWI? If anyone finds a record of Ignatius Kerr after 1919 please let me know. I am wondering if he was married at this time and also where was he living. For a very long time he lived with his father Mathew Kerr on 16th Street, but was later in life found married to Martha Banachowski and living with her and her father (John Banachowski who later changed his surname to a simplified "Banner") on Dolores Street. At the end of his life he was back living on 16th Street. I have obits. on both Ignatius Kerr & Martha Kerr (nee Banachowski). I was hoping someone may have access to a later record of Ignatius (after 1920). He was a "marine engineer" and he was a member of several societies - from obit.: "A member of San Pedro Lodge, No. 966, B. P. O. Elks, and Castro Parlor, No. 232, N. S. G. W., and of the Holy Name Society of Mission Dolores Church." No this is not a duplicate query - several members of my family were affiliated with this same set of societies, including I.O.O.F. & many of the names which appear to be duplicates are not. Thanks for any help trying to find out more about my uncle Ignatius Kerr. I have a reference to a Monadnock Building in San Francisco in 1910 - does anyone know what type of building this was and what kind of business it was? Thank you so much for any help with this - Lynn

It was an office building located at 681 Market, south side, between New Montgomery and Third St. Remember it well. In the 1930s a lot of railroads had their SF offices there: Baltimore and Ohio; Canadian Pacific; Chicago, Burlington and Quincy; Nickel Plate; Missouri Pacific... and more. The North Cosmpolitan School was a grammar school. Its principal received $185.00 per month in 1873. Student breakdown was as follows: Grade Total Total Promoted 1 24 11 2 36 26 3 74 35 4 81 68 5 121 89 6 107 73 632 students enrolled during the year with average attendance of 490.5. There were one 1st, one 2nd, two 3rd, two 4th, three 5th and three 6th grade teachers. there was a German and a French teacher and one prinicipal. At this time, there was opposition to the teaching of French and German, as it cut into English education. It was limited to only a few schools in the district. I have the rules of deportment and the course of study. It is quite challenging.
Please also post responses on-list if possible. I've had little luck in locating archived information on specific cases investigated by SFPD detectives between 1910-1920 and would be interested in any advice that can be given on this topic. --- Pamela Storm Wolfskill <psw@sfo.com> wrote: > Hi all, > > If anyone can answer, please also contact Jeannie > directly > <weezie@onemain.com> as she's not on our list. > Thanks! > > Pam > psw@sfo.com > -- > Pamela Storm Wolfskill > The USGenWeb Project, San Francisco > http://www.sfo.com/~timandpamwolf/sfrancty.htm > ================= > Jeannie Miller <weezie@onemain.com> wrote: > > > Is there a Museum or a keeper of the history for > the sf police dept. > > I am looking for info on a great uncle killed in > the line of duty in > > May 1925. I just got the date of my grandparents divorce of August 7, 1918. I would like to know if there was a newspaper report of it. I remember a family discussion that it was quite a big divorce of the time. The names were Bertha Creelman and Ernest Floyd. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Kathy

Hi there I am looking for information on JAMES ARTHUR NELSON III, born about 1945 in California. He lived in REDWOOD CITY at the time of his father's death in 1976 (see obituary below) If memory serves me correct he grew up with his parents James and Iris in Hillsboro, just outside San Fransisco. His grandmother FLORENCE (MCANNELL) NELSON was sister to my grandmother ELLEN ANN (MCCANNELL) DAVIS. His father and my father Cyril Malcolm were first cousins and friends. The Nelson family often came to Vancouver, BC, Canada to visit us and we in turn went to San Fransisco to visit them. I have much information to share. Thanks for reading this. Hello Maureen- and CASANFRA Listmembers- Maureen I am sending your message on to the CASANFRA list--------they are your best resource for San Francisco history and genealogy-------------- Listmembers, Maureen is not on the list- so please forward your responses directly to her -maureen.selley@ntlworld.com. Thanks, Carolyn Reply-To: maureen.selley@ntlworld.com To: CA-RECORDS-admin@rootsweb.com Subject: Surname WRAGG X-RCPT-TO: <sweetwater@sierratel.com> Hello from Devon UK! Is there any possibility that you could post the following on an appropriate list for me, please? Regards, Maureen Dear Listers, I am Chairman of Devon Family History Society. Yesterday during a local radio phone-in, a gentleman called Bill, (no Internet Access), asked how he could find out about a relative, supposed to be in California at the time of the San Francisco earthquake/fire in 1906. The man's surname was David WRAGG, he was born in Manchester in late 1800s. He was a cabinet maker and also involved in the entertainment business, through a liaison with a lady called Flora Belle or Zelle, she was an illusionist. They met in UK when he made cabinets for her. They travelled to California and there they were "lost", but family stories place him in San Francisco in 1906. Bill has been told that there is now a business in San Francisco trading under the name of WRAGG and would like to establish whether there is a connection. All replies to me please and I will pass them on to Bill in Devon. Many thanks, Maureen Selley
Could someone please tell me if obituaries were automatically put in the paper or was this a service that had to be ordered and paid for? I can't find an obit for my grandfather, William Wright Mahan, in San Francisco, which is where he and his family lived. However, he died in San Jose, April 16, 1919. Might there be an obituary there? Help!! Hello, Can anyone please tell me what is the full description for the term "USS Navy" and a site to access records for the years 1900 to 1910. Help with this would be much appreciated, Robert Ashley, Ballarat, Victoria.
Hi Robert, the letters U. S. S. denote a commissioned naval vessel it is United States Ship. Not all naval craft bear this identifier. It is used in a similar manner as H.M.S. Victory. I could not find any USS Navy. With out knowing the context of your information I would guess that reference is to the US Navy a department of the federal government. These records for the 1900-1910 would most likely be at the National Archives, a good web site www.CyndisList.com/military.htm#Records Good Luck Steve At 10:50 PM 08/14/2001 +1000, you wrote: >Hello, > Can anyone please tell me what is the full description for the > term "USS >Navy" and a site to access records for the years 1900 to 1910. > Help with this would be much appreciated, > Robert Ashley, Ballarat, Victoria.
