Thank you to those of you who responded to my question yesterday. It never seems to fail that just as soon as I begin wondering about something that I am expecting it comes the next day! I was concerned that maybe I had not sent it off properly, thanks again for confirming the email address for me. I did receive the obituary today. What a great service they are doing at the library. Having received this I have another couple questions. First, what papers do they actually have access to there at the library? Second, if an obituary is in more than one paper is it likely to have the same information in each paper. I know that there are always exceptions to any rule but a general rule of thumb could be helpful, especially since the family was not of the wealthy or socially elite. The obituary I received was from the SF Examiner, but I do know that it is also available in the Call. I found it in the online index for births, marriages and deaths found in the Call. I am new to research in San Francisco so would appreciate any help I can receive in this matter. Thanks, JanaLee

Please Ruth excuse my stepping on your message. Give the people a break, the service is free. Steve Ruth, I sent an email to the San Francisco Library following your instructions on 9 Sep and have not yet received a reply. Should I be expecting the reply via email or in the mail? Maybe the event at the WTC has slowed things down abit. Thanks, JanaLee Petersen

When you have a name that is French in origin and probably has an American pronunciation, you must first work with the vowels. The preliminary steps would be: 1. Do you think it was pronounced dis-eer? If so, try Diseer, Disiere, Dissier, etc. It is unlikely that the "ie" was reversed. 2. Do you think they stretched it to sound like "desire"? If so, try spellings that would approximate this. 3. It is possible that the final "e" once had an accent. So, you must also try to work on the theory that it was pronounced des-eer-ray, and work out possible spellings. After this, work with doubled letters. The "ss" could have been reduced to one "s". In this case, a "z" is unlikely, as is a "c". The initial "D" could in fact be a "T". Su Buchignani
I also have a mystery Radcliffe I am trying to solve in CA, perhaps there is a connection. I have a James Radcliffe who died in 1894 in Angels Camp, he is buried with the Peters and Collins families at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, Santa Clara, CA. I have no idea why he is with those families, though there is an early connections of Radcliffes with the Peter/Peters family of Virginia and Kentucky. I know that one of the Collins buried there, William, brother of my great grand mother Ellen Collins O"Sullivan, was a miner. Thus perhaps the Angels Camp connection, since that was an early mining town. Any help, suggestions, connections greatly appreciated. Hello, fellow researchers, My name is Ron Hamilton and I live in Woodley, Cheshire, England. My research of the above man has led me to a town called Kempton and a cemetery called Clayton which are supposed to be near San Francisco. I have searched many maps on many sites. I have advertised on Calosong and nobody has been able to tell if this town actually exists. I am led to understand that this town was created mainly by immigrants from a place called Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire and Dukinfield, Cheshire, in the 1800s. The town was named after the Kemp family from Ashton and Dukinfield and the cemetery was named after a man called Clayton from Dukinfield. Could anyone please advise me if this town and/or cemetery exists or ever existed please. The man namd above is supposed to be buried there, with his wife Ann M. Radcliffe. He died in 1889. She died sometime before him. Thank you for taking time to read this e mail. Kindest Regards to all, Ron Hamilton.
Hi Ron, I hope I can help you as a pay-back for all the help I've gotten from your country! I checked my book HISTORIC SPOTS IN CALIFORNIA - 4th edition - 1990. The only thing I can find close to the name of Kempton is in PLACER COUNTY (page 259) There is reference to KEMPTON'S CROSSING which they describe as running from Sheridan to Marysville. If you have a current map of this area, Placer County (north east of San Francisco), you will see this is now State HWY 65. I see no mention of a cemetery but hope someone else on the list will be able to help with that. Now to CLAYTON! In the same book in CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (page 63) I found a town names CLAYTON mentioned in a section CONTRA COSTA'S MINING TOWNS. "A unique population found its way into the Mount Diablo coal district from the coal field of WALES and CORNWALL." <snipped> "In 1972 the East Bay Regional Park District acquired 2763 acres of land in the area, including the Black Diamond Mine, and created the Black Diamond Regional Preserve. In the springtime, the mine is opened to the public on a restricted basis. The preserve is a beautiful natural area to wander in. It can be reached from Antioch by way of Somerville Road. A short road connects the parking area with ROSE HILL CEMETERY, recently restored after decades of senseless vandalism. Five stately cypress tree guard the spot . Among the burial markers are those of WELSH miners with inscriptions in their native language. --->>>>>How nice if one of our Volunteers has access to that cemetery and could look for your Joseph and Ann Radcliffe... "CLAYTON, southeast of Concord, was an important center in coal-mining days. It had a more diversified economy than the mining towns and survived to become an incorporated town in 1964. Joel CLAYTON ran a dairy farm when he was not a part-time coal miner. We wanted to name the settlement after the Italian patriot Garibaldi, but the residents preferred the name of their neighbor. Clayton Main Street has some interesting old buildings, including the much remodeled Pioneer Saloon from the 1860's....." If you have a current map you will see this area in Contra Costa County [east of San Francisco] very near to Concord. Hope this helps, If you would like, I can get some maps to you via snail-mail.. I am a San Francisco musician and a native. When you inquire about musicians at the White House, Weinstock-Lubin, City of Paris or any of the early department stores, I can tell you that musicians have historically only been brought in for promotional events UNLESS they were steady performers at the restaurants in the department stores. It was common for a quartet or trio to play for luncheon and dinner at almost any decent restaurant in the city. Musicians would work the luncheon service, rest, play dinner service, rest, then do either a show or evening performance at a theatre or hall. Many would work seven days a week. Later, when radio was prominent, musicians would work the station live, getting away for work in restaurants, theatres, auditoriums, etc. There was a time when it was a way to make a pretty penny. My late friend, violinist Sam Stern, remembers making so much money as a young teenager around 1916, that he strode into a car dealership and bought a car for cash. What he failed to notice is that he had no idea how to drive it home!
Jana, I found this at the SF Call index: Sanchez, Annie....married in 1886 to Whittle, Robert......1886M-2677 you can go there by entering this http http://feefhs.org/fdb2/6991/6991-369.html go back to the Sf Call Index home page , it will tell you how to get a photocopy of the newspaper entry. San Francisco is difficult before the Quake and Fire of 1906, this newspaper may be the best and only lead, don't assume that all entries in the SF paper occured in the city, often they say " in this city" but, also some note outlaying towns. Steve >I have information that my husband's great grandfather Robert WHITTLE married >an Annie SANCHEZ in San Francisco in 1886. Where would I look to find a copy >of this record or some info about the marriage.
I could sure use some advise. I have found my 3 Grandparents on the Ellis Island website but I cannot locate the 4th. On my Grandfather's Alien Registration form from 1940 he had declared he arrived as a passenger in San Francisco, not New York. His name was Bernard Schwickerath. He said he arrived on September 17, 1888 in San Francisco. He was coming from Germany. Does anyone know where I could inquire about European passengers disembarking in San Francisco? This would be vital information for our family genealogy. Thank you, Barbara at andyandbabs@msn.com
