    3. JanaLee I think you have the coroner's roll (and that's all unfortunately the only official death record for this period). There's a good description of what records exist at the SF genealogy site: http://www.sfo.com/~timandpamwolf/sfrancty.htm Carol Nash

    1. [CASANFRA] San Francisco Death Records
    2. I have on loan the microfilm of v. 3 covering years 1882 - 1889 of the Death Records for San Francisco. I was looking for Isabel WHITTLE, she died according to an obituary from the San Francisco Examiner "in the city, Dec 13" the year was 1883. She is not in this record. Could anyone tell me, are these records very complete, do they only cover specific types of deaths? It seems like there are a large number of suicides and accidental deaths in it. I would appreciate any further info about these records. Also, if any one would like me to take a peek for them, they are arranged alphabetically - ie all the "A"s together then broken down by year withing that letter. I will have the film a couple more weeks, someone may as well get some use out of it. Thanks for your help, JanaLee

    1. [CASANFRA] Locating Someone in the City in the 1890's
    2. I am trying to find soem record of my great grandfather in San Francisco from 1889-1902, but I have not had any luck in finding him in the directories or the Great Register. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I may find a reference to him? He seems to have been invisible during this period. Based on his military pension record and reenlistment records for the US Navy, my great grandpa, Otto William Bayerd, enlisted at Mare Island on September 23, 1889, and his post office address at enlistment was 28 Minna Street. When he renlisted on September 30, 1895, he listed his next of kin as a brother, A. Bayerd, at 28 Minna Street. On his reenlistment on September 30, 1898, his brother was listed aas next of kin at #28 Main Street, and on reenlistment on November 19, 1901, his brother was listed as living at #31-28th Street, Brooklyn, NY. In the 1900 US Census for the Military and Naval Population taken on August 1, 1900, he was listed as in Cavite, Phillipine Islands, but he listed his residence as 803 (?) Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco. He was also listed as having immigrated to the US in 1880 and as having lived in San Francisco prior to his enlistment in 1889. Is it just me, or am I just having a run of bad luck? I have searched the directories and found no one by that name, although there is an Otto W. Beyer listed as a cook, and who in the Great Register is listed as much older (20yrs +) than my great grandpa with a scar across his face...not my Otto W. My great grandpa was also from Sweden, and this man was from Germany. Am I missing something? There are no naturalization records of him in San Francisco or the District Court, and I am not sure what his occupation was prior to enlistment, ie laborer, coppersmith, or mariner. I should also mention that I believe that he might of changed his name after coming to America, but the first record I have of him is his enlistment as Otto W. Bayerd. Please help if you can. Thanks, Jim Bayard Wareham, MA

    3. Edel, Look at the Great Registers as voters registration. Basically name age occupation residence place of birth. These were recorded in big books by hand, roughly alphabetically by date of registration. There are many years available some on-line others you might find links on line to volunteers able to do look ups. hAPPY hUNTING sTEVE At 06:26 PM 10/02/2001 -0700, you wrote: >I see references made to the Great Register. 2. Bernard Lenhart
    3. I inquired earlly in a post if anyone could assist me in researching any of a group of Lodges that my Greatgrandfater was a member of at the time of his death in 1875. They were. Yosemite Lodge No.4, United Endowment Associates, also Yosemite Lodge, No. 1930, Knights of Honor; California Council, No. 250, American Legion of Honor; and Argonaut Council, No. 519. Royal Arcamum. Surely these organizations must have left a trace of history. I would greatly appreciate the assistance of any of you San Francisco historians in locating an archive or some kind of historical record. My greatgrandfather was a past grand Commander and officer of each of the above mentioned organizations. 1. [CASANFRA] Starr Baldwin died in SF 1855-1865
    2. I have an elusive ancestor, Starr BALDWIN reportedly born about 1812 in New York and was in the 1840 Cuyahoga County, Cleveland, Ohio census with his wife Mary, and two young daughters Mary and Jenette. Family lore says that he "went to San Francisco and died." His wife and daughters moved to Nebraska supposedly 1855 and she was listed as a widow by 1865. Does anyone think I have any chance of finding out anything on where/when Starr Baldwin died in San Francisco? It's too early for death indexes. Are there any places online to search? Were there city directories that long ago (1855-1865)? Could I assume he was part of the gold rush? I had hoped to try to do some research at the libraries in San Francisco on a business trip in October but my trip was cancelled. If anyone would like my FREE ticket to Alcatraz with audio for Sun. Oct 14, 1:15 PM please e-mail me privately soon. Marilyn Oregon

    3. The International Settlement was off of Broadway part in North Beach and Part in the Financial area. It had French, Italian and Spanish people living there. During prohibition there were speak easys. It was known for its cheap hotels where rooms were 25 cents a day. They had a name for those kinds of hotels but my source can't remember what they were called. And yes there was an arch across the street. I remember the arch. Not sure if it was Hotaling alley or Honkley alley. Jeanine
