Hi there I am looking for information on JAMES ARTHUR NELSON III, born about 1945 in California. He lived in REDWOOD CITY at the time of his father's death in 1976 (see obituary below) If memory serves me correct he grew up with his parents James and Iris in Hillsboro, just outside San Fransisco. His grandmother FLORENCE (MCANNELL) NELSON was sister to my grandmother ELLEN ANN (MCCANNELL) DAVIS. His father and my father Cyril Malcolm were first cousins and friends. The Nelson family often came to Vancouver, BC, Canada to visit us and we in turn went to San Fransisco to visit them. I have much information to share. Thanks for reading this. Forgot to mention, as far as I know the San Francisco Call Bulletin did not exist until the late 1920s, so I think that it's the San Francisco Newspaper Index that you're after. Hope this helps. --- Brian Riggs <b90025@yahoo.com> wrote: > There are indexes for the San Francisco Call from > 1893-1913. There are indexes for the San Francisco Call from 1893-1913. The San Francisco Public Library owns a copy of this microfilm set, which I think is called the San Francisco Newspapers Index. It also includes an index to the Chronicle and Examiner for the years of 1913-1949. --- Bonnie Wallace <nthegenes@hotmail.com> wrote: > Is there a searchable index for the Call Bulletin > that I might access? Can anyone tell me anything about Olivet memorial Park and where it is, an address and if there are any records available. Is it still a cemetery that is taking new graves? Also need info and address on Golden Gate Undertaking Co, that operated in 1943. Is it still there, are records available and is there a current address. If not is there any way I can get copies of records from these 2 places. Looking for info on Frank E. Lehr died 17 Feb 1943, he died at 1111 Pine Street (home of his daughter Grace Drum), San Francisco, CA and he lived at 1503 Belmont Drive in Belmont, San Mateo. If anyone has any info it would be deeply appreciated. Thank You. At a brick wall in VA. Thanks for your time and efforts. Sandy
Dear Readers, I have a photo of my great grandfather, John Joseph NUNAN standing on the unfinished Golden Gate Bridge with a Mr. Dunning. The photo is dated Saturday, May 15, 1937. Can anyone tell me who Mr. Dunning was? He may have been associated with the Bethlehem Co. He was wearing a dark suit, with a boutonniere in the lapel, and a black banded straw hat. Mr. Dunning appeared to be escorting (the 85 yrs.old) John Nunan on a tour of the bridge. John Nunan's brother in-law, Albert Reedy, was a manager with Bethlehem Supply Co. (Mr. Reedy was the husband of Mabel Tadich, of Tadich's Grill Restaurant.) Sincerely, Julie Fontana Collins
Hello People, I'm new to the list and thought I would post my interest. I'm looking for any information that will help me find Thomas Foster BECK, b. abt 1866 in Ontario, Canada, d.1935 possibly in San Francisco County. He emigrated to the US sometime in the 1800's and made his home in San Francisco. He married Georgian EDWARDS and at some point in time they divorced. Are these people familiar to anyone. Thank you Kathy Irwin Odessa, Texas USA condor@texasonline.net kathy1619@yahoo.com
Su, You are quite right - in 1882-83 J. Kemp is listed. "Kemp, J. & Co. (Joseph Kemp and William Bateman) wood and ivory turners, and carvers, and cabinet making, 109 Mission." Also, "Kemp, Joseph (J. Kemp & Co.) r. 2230-1/2 Mission. Regards to all!! I believe in the 1860s, J. Kemp was a furniture maker, working alone in 1864. You read Bill Roddy's account of the company in 1875. By 1880 Joseph Kemp had taken as partner William Bateman, and had expanded the business to include wood and ivory turning and carving.
In the 1875 City Dir, Kemp and Hoffman Co. (Joseph Kemp and Charles S. Hoffman) were woodcarvers SE corner of Mission and Beale. Kathy, only a little bit, maybe less than you already know. I'm researching some Grahams and Hogans who worked for J.B. Kemp Co for a while. Whatever the Kemp Company did, it employed laborers and was in business until at least 1872. 1n 1869 there were two William Grahams working for Kemp. One was a hosteler dwelling at Long Bridge; the other was a laborer dwelling on W side of Kentucky near Irwin. From that it sounds like the company might have been a hostelry - outfitting house of some kind. In 1871-72 John Hogan and William Hogan were both labourers with the Kemp Co and were both dwelling at "corner Kentucky and South Streets". I think these addresses would be down in the dock area east of the Ferry Building? I presume this was close to where the men worked. Those items came from the San Francisco city directories, but I didn't do the lookup, so I don't know whether the Kemp Company might have had a commercial listing in one or more of the directories in the 1860s and 70s Would sure like to know more if you have, or find, it. Does anyone have any knowledge of a J. B. Kemp Co. that operated in San Francisco during the 1860's? I find several names that I am researching worked for this company. Kathy
This may not interest everyone, but it is a list of all U. S. Navy ships in 1861. Name, guns, tonnage, where built, when, and place of duty; for example, every ship blockading Confederate ports is listed. Select type of ship from following: http://americahurrah.com/Navy/ShipList.htm Compiled from Official Register of the United States for 1861. Please advise errors or problems. Not sure what they would have done. If your brother acceded they might have buried him at sea. He died twelve days from Acapulco. The captain would have noted it in his log, and reported it to port autorities in Acapulco. How they would have preserved the body at sea I do not know. Here's a question I've not seen before... I believe I have an ancestor that died on board ship from Panama bound for San Francisco, via Acapulco and San Diego. The trip was to take 20 days, leaving Panama on Sep 17, 1850. My ancestor, Ambrose Schmitz, died on 19 Sep 1850. My questions are these: Is it likely that he was buried in Acapulco? If so, what about the death certificate? If not, would they keep the body until San Francisco and bury him there, filing a DC as well? I believe Ambrose was traveling with his brother Joseph. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Jim Schmitz jim@mcparlane.com
I am a leader of a Senior Girl Scout Troop and one of my girls for her Gold Award project has transcribed information about some of the cemeteries in Contra Costa County and made them available on the web. She got the idea because her mother is into genealogy and was distressed to learn that none of the cemeteries in Contra Costa were online. Catherine Cox is a senior at Acalanes High School in Lafayette and would be thrilled if you checked out her site and gave her some positive feed back. She is still transcibing records and hopes to have it finished soon. She would enjoy your encouragement. Alice, This sounds like a terrific project. The more cemeteries we have online the better it is for genealogists and historians. More importantly, the more cemeteries, large and small, that become listed the easier it will be for later generations to appreciate and help protect them. Please let Catherine Cox know what a wonderful public service she is performing!
