Hi everyone: Why send to all CALIF lists? Because from 1854 to late 1800's if you were committed in Calif to a state hospital, you were sent to Stockton for long term care. Why would you get committed? For reading Trashy Romance Novels, for being Jealous of hubby's new lady friend, for striking gold, and being to happy with it (they took the claim from this one I am sure), for sending for your niece & nephews after saving for years to do so.. and being to happy at seeing them arrive, for being to old to care for yourself, for missing over 5 menses (menopause), some legit, many more not. No, I haven't given up! I received a letter from a gentleman who stated he and one other person went into a Judge's chambers and in a matter of a few hours had "successfully removed" all the remains at the old State Hospital Cemetery to a common grave at Rural cemetery. One great feat accomplished with a few strokes of a pen (this man gave copies to all city/county/state officials, or asked Stockton to forward for him). This man is very concerned about the happenings years ago. He has been pushing me to get the matter corrected, as he had no success on his own. I had been trying to do this without mentioning this person, as he is elderly now, and it would do no good to hold him responsible for something others with greater authority talked him into doing. This has been a worry to him since it's inception, and he is relieved & willing to do what needs to be done to put things right (get the records released & get a plaque put up). The above is the major news.. the following is an update as to my contacts with the city, county & state officials... City of Stockton sent it to the city Attorney (probably to make sure they don't have any worries); city attorney said it's a District Attorney thing.. DA says call Stockton Police to the site, file a criminal complaint, since I think it was a crime (branded me a loony, don't you think?). Barbara Matthew's office is following up & has forwarded to other offices. Pombo's office forwarded it to others (not his district). Calif Archives said they would get back to me months ago, so I wrote them again today. Stockton/SJC planning commission has it, not sure what's happening there.. will call them again... think they gave it to someone else, City Attorney I think. Mike Machado's office has it, and I sent Patty there a copy of the letter from the gentleman I mentioned above, and she is yet to return my calls.. she is working on the Cemetery Regulations side of it, to see if there indeed is a problem. Patty & Mike Machado are the best bet to date. I was at the property yesterday, no change.. for sale sign that CRichard Ellis company have up & promised to remove is still there, the place is still strewn with trash, old car seats, a washer or dryer, junk... I was thinking of taking hubby's truck out and cleaning it a bit (have a nephew I can pay to help), but the transients are still in a tent there ( I never reported them, hey, we have to live) so I won't go out there by myself & don't want them to accost my nephew, as he has a short fuse. And, besides, it's not my place to clean the place up for a real estate company who does not even know who the owner is, right? I may do so soon, but would like a city/county/state official to view the property as it is first. We have excellent grounds to get the records released, and more if we chose to do so. It is not my intent to make the owners of the buildings (Beverly Manor Care home, and medical offices) remove them. I just want the names released so folks will know where their ancestor's are buried. There are no markers of any kind, so finding grave would be hap hazard after all these years anyway. The money & time would be better spent erecting a monument & giving public a place to check for names of ancestor's who are buried at the old site. Best we can do with all that has transpired. We have the law on our side, and with the information we now have on how the zone change was done.. it is my feeling the State holds the ball, and it is up to them to right things. I was also thinking of posting a sign on the site.. Stockton State Hospital Cemetery, etc... with contact phone number for those interested in the site. I would have to find a sign to use, or could just post it onto the for sale sign.. hey, if they forgot it was there... then they abandoned the sign, right? (I will call them again today to see if they mind if I attach a sign to theirs)... or they can take theirs down & have the owner call me.. he/they could sue the state & get lots of money.. right, our money... we taxpayers just can't win, but the land would go back to the state.. so they could leave as a cemetery.. hmmmm. Well, that is where things are at the moment. And I apologize if I sound trite, but it's laugh or cry.. and I get a headache when I cry.. so life goes on. This may not interest all, but it is a complete list of all U. S. Navy ships in 1861. It now includes an index of thirteen American shipyards, and the vessels they built. San Francisco built one in 1858, the Saginaw. http://americahurrah.com/OfficialRegister/Navy/ShipList.htm -- Bill America Hurrah http//www.americahurrah.com
Hi, all - If anyone on the list can help me with these two things it will be highly appreciated. 1. I had an ancestor who applied for naturalization ( May 1889 ) while residing at "Silver State House". in San Francisco. Does anyone on the list know what kind of property Silver State House was, and its location? 2. In 1899 he resided at 1140 Golden Gate Avenue; in 1900 and 1901 he was at 21 Taylor Street and in 1902 was at 512 Golden Gate Ave. Does anyone know what types of properties (and the names of them if they were commercial properties) that were at each of those three addresses? Gaylord Staveley
I amy be beating a dead horse here, but I found some old notes indicating that J.B. Kemp was the foreman for an H.F. Williams & Company in the 1869/1870 City Directory for San Francisco. H.F. Williams was the City Paving Comapny located at 619 Montgomery in San Francisco. I believe this company would have laid the pavement for early San Francisco streets. The furniture company of J. Kemp was probably a completely different outfit. A paving company would have been more likely to have hired Irish immigrants to do the manual labor than a furniture company which, presumably would have required skilled craftsmen & fewer laborers. This is a wonderful resource to genealogists and to all researchers. There are many ways to find "genealogy" but Vivisimo is unique. Enter the word or phrase you want and on the right side of the screen you will find the links and on the left are the related categories. Search genealogy and the categories on the left will be: Family, Genealogy resources, Genealogy research, Records, County, Libraries, Societies, etc. Each can be clicked to open up new links. Try it! Issac LEHR married Mary Jane WINKLER 14 Nov 1850 in Wayne, OH. 1. Daughter Mary A. "Adeline "Addie" LEHR born around 1853 in OH 2. Son Marvin Allen LEHR born 22 Nov 1855 (can't find if Oh, Il or Pa - different census say different states) . The last lead I got was Peoria, Il that I need to check out. At a brick wall. 3. Daughter Elmira or Elvira LEHR born around 1861 probably in DePue, IL (still working on that). It is in the 1860 census for Bureau, DePue, IL. 4. Son Frank Edwin LEHR born 4 May 1860 DePue, Bureau, IL. Isacc LEHR died 15 Dec 1865 in Bureau, DePue, Il and is buried at Searle's Ridge cemetery. I can't get any info on death. No certificate or can I find any obit or records. The Bureau Geneological Society gave me the info form book they have on Searle Ridge Cemetery that list his name. Addie married DM SMITH and they are in the 1880 census for Schaller, IA with a son Harry B. SMITH. Frank is there with them. Frank Edwin LEHR married Laura RAWSON on 24 Dec 1880 in Bureau, IL . I have copy of Frank's delayed birth certificate & his and Laura's marriage license. Frank died 2/17/1943 in San Francisco, CA and Laura RAWSON LEHR died 5/27/1945 in San Francisco, CA. I just got copy of death certificate and he is buried at Olivet Memorial Park in Colma, CA. In process of writing them to get records and see if Laura is there also. The marriage lincense listed Merinda & Brent RAWSON as parents. I also have them in the 1880 cencus for Bureau, IL They had 2 children that I'm aware of and I can't find info on any of them. 1. Grace LEHR born 1881 in Schaller, IA (she became DRUM, but can't find any more on that). 2. Imogene LEHR born 14 Mar 1884 in Schaller, IA. Grace was living in San Francisco with them in the late 1930's to 1958 and then I guess she died or moved. She managed apartment houses. I will be asking if she is at the same cemetery. According to the 1889 city directory Frank was a Marshall. On his death certificate it states he was an accountant. My grandmother was a cousin to Frank Lehr. Hazel Alice LEHR, REESE, CALVOS, HOLM, NATHAN was the daughter of marvin Allen Lehr (Frank's brother). Hazel also lived in San Francisco when they came to CA in late 1930's I think. Then she moved to Vallejo, CA with my dad. Hazel had a son named Jack V. REESE and I'm his daughter. The family never talked about the family and now I'm interested in knowing all I can about my ancestors. I started searching this in 1986 when my daughter was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I've really gotten into it since last Christmas when I got a comptuer than had internet capability. Do you have any info on the above mentioned people? Would you be willing to share? Do you know if Laura is buried in Kansa in the family plot? Would any of her children be there? I'm interested in anything about the RAWSON , LEHR, SMIYH, DRUM and their relatives. I'm especially interested in what they did in Bureau, Il and in Schaller, IA. The LEHR's moved to Omaha, NE inearly 1900's. I have them in Boone, Ne in 1900. Then when Marvin died in 1927 in Omaha,NE I think the family moved on west and split up. One daughter went to Louisville, KY and 1 daughter to Jesup, GA. One son went to Seattle, WA, but was buried near the father and brother in Omaha, NE. I still can't find anything on the mother Mary Jane Lehr. She was last in 1900 Schaller, IA census and know one can find a death for her in Schaller, IA. I think she must have stayed with the daughter Addie SMITH, but I don't know where they went. Also would like any LEHR info as there is only one living LEHR member who is 87 and she has lost her long term memory. At a brick wall , Sandy in VA Thanks
I am new to this list and hoping SKS can lead me in the right direction. Have the following info from the Ellis Is site: MICHAEL LEHANE [20] and EDMOND SWEENEY [22] both from BALLYVOURNEY, CO. CORK, arrived in NY 11 June 1904 going to stay with brother CORNELIUS LEHANE, 512 HOWARD ST. SF. Next of kin in Ireland was JOHN LEHANE, BALLYVOURNEY. Where do I go from here to find out what happened to them and where did their lives lead them. Peggy Townsville Australia
Hi Margaret, If I were you I would check the 1910 and 1920 census. I would probably first check for your folks on the CADI (California Death Index) http://vitals.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi - might find them or their offspring and be able to work from there. Also check the SF City directories. BUT first you should look at the San Francisco GenWeb site http://www.sfo.com/~timandpamwolf/sfrancty.htm to learn of all the places to look for your SF folks. Great site - lots of help there!
