    1. [CASANFRA] Shipwreck of the Alaska in 1921
    2. Diana Smith
    3. I am interested in knowing if there are any other living persons or descendants of passengers & crew of the ship "ALASKA" that was to have sailed from Portland, Oregon to San Francisco, California in August of 1921. After leaving Portland, the ship wrecked on Blunt's Reef off the coast of Eureka, Ca. on August 6, 1921. Of the 220 crew & passengers, 42 people died. I have a family member that is a living survivor of that event. She was a 4 year old that survived by floating on a piece of debris for many hours before her rescue. I would like to connect with other persons interested in this story, and also find additional information or articles about the disaster for her family scrapbook. Thank you. Diana in Oregon

    2. Margie
    3. I just recieved this from the State Archives contact, I am waiting to hear from her about the date of this hearing. I will be driving up (if it's not today) and I live in Lodi, CA. If the date is in the next month, would anyone want to attend? I would like a list of those who want to attend, and if you definately plan to go.. (after we get confirmed date). If you are near me in Lodi, willing to carpool in my car.. can take 4 people, possibly 5... let me know. Looks like an all day event... We could bring lunch, or potluck, or McDonalds? Perfect opportunity to voice our concerns on this matter. I thought you might be interested in knowing, if you don't already, about an upcoming hearing on this subject being held by a select committee of the State Senate. All who were buried in the State Hospital Cemetery are in a public cemetery, and the records of who is buried there, by law is a public record, and the public must have access. The fact that the State did not keep the records seperate, as they should have done, is not the issue. The issue is that all public cemetery burial information is to be made public. By the information we have, the cemetery (per state officials in 1955) was never abandoned, so is still a public cemetery, containing 3,500 bodies. Someone needs to seperate the public burial information & make it public as the law states. Beals of the California Genealogical Society: SFRA10:4770 Taylor, Annie S.; [dec] #26189 exec, Ida florence Davis; Maude Eloise Margo I know that 26189 is the old docket # and I assume that 4770 is the new docket # SFRA (San Francisco Registers of Actions, Probate Vol. 1-40) My vol. is 10 My question is how can I get a copy of this probate and will they mail it to me? Thanks for any help. Patty Delgado Monarch Beach, CA

    1. [CASANFRA] Florence HUESTIS/MASON
    2. Anita C. Mason
    3. Hi Everyone, Does the name Florence HUESTIS/MASON ring a bell with anyone? She was born in Mountain View, CA and may have moved to San Francisco in the early 1900s. I haven't a clue what happened to Florence, particularly if she ever married. Florence's younger brother Clarence was killed on Market Street in the early 1900s and it occurred to me that possibly Clarence might have been living with Florence at the time of his untimely death. Clarence was selling newspapers along Market Street when he was run over by a streetcar. Clarence's obituary did not list any next of kin, but that might have been because the newspaper wrote the obit for one of their employees and did not know anything about Clarence's private life. Florence's mother, Belle [HUESTIS] MASON died in 1896 in Mountain View and I have no information regarding what happened to the three children after that time. Florence's older brother, Jesse, married my grandmother in Salinas in 1910. He had been on his own for a number of years prior to his marriage. Jesse believed that HUESTIS was his real surname and MASON was the name of the family that adopted him. I've since found out that HUESTIS was the maiden name of his mother and that his natural father was named MASON. Any information on my elusive Florence would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Anita C. Monterey County

You can find it at http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2001/10/28 /CM195175.DTL If you have anyone you know who might fit into his book list, be sure to contact me. I have been trying to research some of these artists for Mr. Hughes for about two years. The stories in this article alone are fascinating. Sandra
