    1. [CASANFRA] ssdi
    2. Doug Urbanus
    3. It's total nonsense to be concerned that the SSDI is a source of SSNs that are usable by terrorists. The only thing unique about the SSNs in the SSDI is that the original holders are deceased and the numbers were/are legitimate. Otherwise to the layman any series of numbers laid out in the nnn-nn-nnnn format appears to be legitimate. The issue may be rather any nnn-nn-nnnn appearing on a SSN card. But it is not the number, but rather the appearance on what appears be legitimate SSN card stock that convinces the uniformed not the number itself. As a former employee of SSA I am aware of millions of users of totally bogus numbers for employment purposes. These numbers were identified as belonging to deceased persons, children, adults but mismatched names or were simply made up. The SSDI was not the sources of these SSNs. The existence of the SSDI is irrelevant to anyone who wishes to use a fraudulent number on fake SSN card stock. Indeed each of the SSDI numbers is internally flagged by SSA as not reissuable to anyone for 70 years or so (when in fact they will be recycled to new users). And by the way in Federal matters the deceased do in fact lose their right to privacy upon death. The law is a bit subtler than this of course.

    3. Found this on another list & thought it was worth reposting here: This article appeared in the Washington Post yesterday, November 8th. Cngress, in its wisdom, has decided to hold hearings on whether or not to continue to allow access to the SSDI, since all of the terrorists on 9-11 had SS#. I just wanted to suggest that, first of all, you read it straight from the horse's mouth (the Washington Post article) before the web rumor mill gets hold of it, and second, that you see if you find out as many things about the SSDI as I did when I read the article. If nothing else, it is a great education about the SSDI itself. Go to: http://genealogysearch.org/news/index.html and click on the link for the SSDI article in the Washington Post. Linda

    1. [CASANFRA] Missing Family Records
    2. Kathy
    3. My great Uncle James Redmond Waddell died in 94-95, not sure of the date. He has 10 children, none whom seem very close to one another, let a lone other family members. They live all over the USA. A few of them have been very kind and shared what little family history that they knew. Uncle Jim died in Santa Rosa, and the story goes, that a family friend of his came to his estate sale and bought all our family records, including the wedding book, that was my great grandmother who raised me, I have the wedding dress and wedding pictures. In 93 my paternal uncle Chuck handed me the wedding book, which had been left in his care for me, since grandma died when I was 11 years. His wife took it out of my hands and said she was not ready to give it up, this was not her family. She gave it to Uncle Jim, I'm sure hoping he would leave her a hefty amount of money some day. My uncle Chuck died in March of 2000 at the age of 57. I contacted the Waddell cousins, telling them the truth, I wanted nothing from them but written history that Mary Waddell, who raised me worked on for years, like me. I was also looking for the Thornton Slave papers and Stage Line Papers of the South that our family owned. Every one of the Waddell cousins, said they wished they would have know about me that, they would have given them to me as they are of know interest to them. A friend of my Uncle James (JIM) Waddell came to the estate sale and was either given or bought everything. Many of these things were left in my Uncle's care till I turned 21, well I'm 43 now and have been working on my history for years. I need to know the Rootsweb site for Santa Rosa and if there is a site on here or anywhere else, where people buy family history to sale. These items are priceless to me and I am by know way rich, but if any one can help me find my history, I will find a way to pay you anything, to get our history back. If any one has any advice, please email me tot@wave.net. I also need to let people who are looking for family to Solomon & Adeline Runyon, I am hear. Last month someone was looking for Runyon Family, and ended up giving family documents to the people who live in our family home which we owned 1860-1969. These people are very kind people, but they know about me and my family research, I visit them each summer for about five years now. These papers were signed by my 3rd great grandmother Adeline Runyon late 1800's. And they should have gone to family, unless I'm just nuts!! Any help would be great, good night!! Sincerely Kathy

    1. [CASANFRA] Re: Stockton State Hospital- Getting the laws ammended
    2. Margie
    3. Thank you for your reply. We have the information on how to obtain individual records on known persons. I would like the Costa Mesa information just in case someone asks for it. Have contact at Sonoma. Not all records were sent there.. some went to state archives, some to SJChealth dept...from what I recall. We are not looking for one individual. There are over 3,500 unknown persons buried in the old Stockton State Hospital cemetery. The names and information on their death/burials is considered part of the medical records for the state hospital. The law states that all public cemeteries must provide death/burial information to the public. The State of California sold this cemetery property to the American Legion (Karl Ross Post) in 1948... Karl Ross Post could not use the northern most 5 acres for anything but cemetery purposes until ALL bodies had been removed ... in 1955 the land was rezoned for commercial use... in error. A County Planner stopped the rezone & said it was illegal...only someone forgot to reclassify the land cemetery.. instead it was listed as residential/farming. A judge & two other persons with connections to Karl Ross Post, in a matter of a few hours in the judges chambers, managed to move all 3,500 bodies to a common grave.. nice feat, considering they never left the judges chambers. **all the above is documented. What the goal is, is to have the death/burial records for every person buried in the cemetery released. This means that the State will have to seperate (as it should have in the beginning) all this information from the medical records, and then make the cemetery burial records public. If we had the name and death date of every person buried in this old cemetery, we could look up death information.. but as it stands we have nothing, unless a descendant contacts us looking for a specific person. http://www.rootsweb.com/~moiron2 Iron County MO Web Page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcampbel/home.htm Margie Campbell's Original Web Page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcampbel/ Margie Campbell's NEW Site (under construction) HERMES surname maillist host WENSTRÖM surname maillist host ----- Original Message ----- From: "B&B Allured" <allured@jps.net> To: "Margie" <margecam@pacbell.net> Sent: Tuesday, November 06, 2001 9:06 PM Subject: Re: Stockton State Hospital- Getting the laws ammended > Your message was forwarded to me. 3. Barbara I found the following; In a quick look at some San Francisco, first time listed is 1886, as a watchman for the San Francisco city Laundry, which job he held up to about 1900, but for two years when he was listed as a engineer for them. In the 1912-13 one a Amos Jr., is living with them at 10 Avery, and is listed as a driver. He died 1918-09-28, at the age of 68, spouse E, state file number 18-32431 There were two Elizabeth Morris's listed the first is the one I think you are looking for. Elizabeth Morris, died 1931-04-04, at the age of 80, spouse A, state file number 31 23008 The other one died 1939-09-10, state file number 39-57695, age 72 no spouse. Will do some more checking in the City Directories and see if i can learn any thing more. 1. [CASANFRA] Stockton State Hospital- Getting the laws ammended
    2. Margie
    3. Hi everyone: The California Archives are following the law in not releasing the information on those who died & are buried at the old State Hospital Cemetery. I agree this law needs to be ammended (you can view this law at: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html ) Perhaps adding the following as an ammendment to 5328. which reads: All information and records obtained in the course of providing services under Division 4 (commencing with Section 4000), Division 4.1 ( commencing with Section 4400), Division 4.5 (commencing with Section 4500), Division 5 ( commencing with Section 5000), Division 6 (commencing with Section 6000), or Division 7 (commencing with Section 7100), to either voluntary or involuntary reciepients of services shall be confidential. Information and records obtained in the course of providing similar services to either voluntary or involuntary reciepients prior to 1969 shall also be confidential. Information and records shall be disclosed only in any of the following cases: NOTE: There are 19 pages of reasons... It is my recomendation that all interested parties read this law carefully.... Suggest an ammendment be added that will allow the release of information a set number of years after the death of a patient (75 should be sufficient to not be harmful/hurtful for anyone connected to the deceased). This could be achieved quickly by ammending the above paragraph to include: ....to either voluntary or involuntary reciepients of services shall be confidential during the lifetime of the individual recieving such services, and no longer than 75 years after the demise of said individual...... Also suggest an ammendment that will legalize the release of all medical records of any person who recieved services to any descendant who shows proof of death & proof of relationship to said individual for family genetic research. Also, an ammendment that states all death & burial records for individuals who died while under treatment at any state facility, are deemed public information, as mandated by California Health and Safety Code_________. That all death & burial records of any individual recieving services from a state facility, who sucumbs while an inmate of a facility, and is buried in state operated burial grounds, is deemed pubic information under law, and will be made available to the public. This information will include the following information: Date of Death, Reason, Burial plot number, place of burial. Also, an ammendment needs to be made that states that all remains will be cared for as mandated under the California Health and Safety code________. Also, that all above ammendments are retroactive to include any and all records on file in State offices, Archives, etc. for this state. Need to make sure it is the State that will pay for making these available to the public. I am in process of determining how to word the above properly to submit to my local officials (Senate, Congress, Assembly). This is what needs to be done to get the laws ammended to allow for release of burial information, medical information for those needing it, etc. Please feel free to post your suggestions for wording these ammendments.. and to forward this note to any you feel may be of value in getting the above done as soon as possible.
