    1. [CASANFRA] San Jose Mercury Editorial on C.A.B.I./ Dec 2, 2001
    2. George Rushton
    3. You might want to read this Editorial, and sent it to people in the state for why not to ban the C.A.B.I. George Published Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in the San Jose Mercury News EDITORIAL The opinion of the Mercury News It's not really Identitytheft.com Genealogy site pulls data purchased from the state off the Web, but access to it should not be narrowly restricted; there are other ways to protect privacy UNTIL Friday, you could go to RootsWeb.com and type a name of anyone born in California between 1905 and 1995. You'd get the person's birth date, county of birth and mother's maiden name. But two days after a hearing in Sacramento drew attention to the site, and incensed Californians protested that their privacy had been invaded,RootsWeb pulled the data. RootsWeb.com is a genealogy site. If you're into family history, it might save hours of traipsing from county to county looking for documents. If you're a news reporter, you could verify an official's rsum. If you're an adopted child, you might uncover the Rosetta Stone to your past. But if you're a crook, the site might help make somebody your mark. The California data told you where to go for a birth certificate, which is useful in obtaining a passport and applying for a job. Many banks use a mother's maiden name as a password, assuming strangers don't know it. That may have been a safe assumption, until RootsWeb.com bought 25 million Californians' birth records from the state for $900. For now, you too can buy the CD ROM for that price. But Sen. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, is calling on Gov. Gray Davis to halt the sale of the database. Davis should resist the pressure. RootsWeb.com simply made available, in one location and with one click, records that have always been available to those willing to scour for them. You can make a good case that the potential beneficial uses of the information outweigh the imagined harm of making it more accessible -- notwithstanding some people's gut reaction against seeing their mothers' names on the Internet. Even staunch privacy advocates disagree in this case. At the Senate hearing that brought RootsWeb.com to light, Speier said she'd introduce a bill to limit access to birth records, in order to discourage identify theft. Sen. Debra Bowen, D-Redondo Beach, the sponsor of a landmark identity theft bill the Legislature passed this year, said she saw no reason to. Let's wait for actual, not hypothetical, evidence of a problem, she said. Bowen got it right. Identity theft -- impersonating someone, usually to get a driver's license or credit card -- is a mushrooming crime. But fear of it shouldn't rationalize narrow access to public records. There are more effective ways to prevent identity theft, like regulating who gets copies of birth certificates or forbidding companies to use a maiden name as a password. A tension has always existed between individuals' privacy interests and people's right to public records. Until the emergence of data bases and the Internet, it was less of an issue. Most people didn't have the time to go through government files. With the Web, practical barriers are falling; governments are posting, and companies are buying and putting up, all kinds of records. There is personal information -- Social Security numbers, testimony in divorce cases -- that governments should not widely disseminate, in order to protect privacy and prevent identify theft. Government should ban companies from selling information they gather about individual customers without the customers' consent -- something the Legislature has refused to do. But the Internet itself doesn't alter the balance between privacy interests and the need to know. Public records hold government accountable and protect the public. Voting lists, mortgage liens, court records all have legitimate uses demanding public access. The burden on those who would restrict it must remain high. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Buy the perfect holiday gifts at Yahoo! 1. [CASANFRA] Virus Free
    2. Kathy
    3. Hello List, We have been working on my computer since I returned to town on Thursday, seems that six innocent people sent me the Worm Badtransll 32.exe and the PST Hooker Trogan, which in turn may have infected others at random in my address book. I was running Notion Anti virus and I updated it often. It did not pick up anything!! I have put AVP in my computer. I am not here to argue about which program is better then the next, but I just learned a hard lesson. My main reason for being on here is to say I am sorry to anyone who I may have sent this virus unknowingly to. Please forgive me and I am virus free now. I wish I would have listen to my husband tell me a year ago to put in AVP-Antivirus Program. They give a 30 day free trial, at Kasperkey.com. And to those who sent it to me, I hope you got it fixed. I know it was written in Russia. So forgive me and remember, I am not the only one who could or has sent this virus, my anti virus gives me the names of the infected people who sent it to me. So if you have a good anti virus, it would in turn pick up my name if I sent it out. So back to my history!!! Forgive Me!! If it was me!!! Sincerely Kathy

    1. [CASANFRA] D.A. Lasater, died May 1877-San Francisco
    2. While accessing the San Francisco Call newspaper index, I accidentally stumbled across a death notice for a 'mssing' cousin who evidentally died in San Francisco the 19th of May 1977 at age 23. I ordered a photocopy hoping to verify this was really David A. Lasater, born 1854 in Oregon. The copy did not verify the David part but did mention he was a native of Oregon, so I'm pretty sure I have the right person. I've not spent much time researching the northern California area and am hoping someone on the list can point me in a direction where I may find additional information. There doesn't appear to be many records available for this time period, at least from the sleuthing I've done online. I've read that many records were destroyed from fires resulting from the earthquake, cemeteries were uprooted-moved-headstones used for other buildings, etc. Some one was kind enough to do a lookup for me in some coroners reports but the year of 1877 was missing. I guess I am hoping to locate funeral home records, police and coroner's reports, etc, anything that might help me locate additional infomation. I appreciate any leads you might be able to give, Thanks! Vanessa Lasater Argyres

    1. [CASANFRA] CABI/CADI lookups are available
    2. Margie
    3. Hi all: I recieved this reply from Colleen Norby, who is off line with computer problems... If you need a CABI/CADI check.. just post a note, and if someone sees a note & it does not get a reply.. email one of those who are always online... Colleen, Sharon, etc.. even Marge (me.. don't have the cd... but can forward your messages to someone who does). The lookup will be done from the cds... will be a bit more time consuming.. but at least no one will be borrowing your identity... sure wish they would borrow my bills... why don't they pay our bills while they are at it? Marge Here's what Colleen wrote: Good suggestion Marge.....as Sharon mentioned, there are a number of us that do own the cds and we did provide lookups prior to rootsweb.com buying the index and placing it on line......so I guess we'll go back to answering those requests on this mailing list - since I'm not subscribed to any of the county lists right now with my computer problem, if anyone is on a county mail list, ask them to share that there are volunteers to help with CABI on the CADI list....I will attempt to change the welcoming message from work this week... 1. [CASANFRA] Portuguese Blood Only
    2. ADRIENNE STEFANIK
    3. To all with Portuguese blood, I was recently contacted by Mr. Ugo Perego of Brigham Young University, the Events Coordinator for the Molecular Genealogy Research Project. Many of you already heard about this project, but I have selected several quotes from our recent correspondence which deals with the topic of my message: "My name is Ugo Perego and I have been working for the past 2 years on a project known as Molecular Genealogy. The main purpose of this project is to develop a genetic map of the world that will be used as a new genealogical tool to assist individuals with blocked genealogies to trace the origin of their family lines even in the absence of written records. You can learn more about this study by visiting our website at http://molecular-genealogy.byu.edu ...." "To make this database functional, we will need at least 100,000 people with ancestry from all over the world. Currently, over 22,000 individuals have contributed to the research by donating a copy of their pedigree chart and a small sample of blood (6cc). These first 22,000 participants are showing us where we need to collect the next samples (we have two pie charts on our website that show the distribution of the participants' ancestry at http://molecular-genealogy.byu.edu/collect.htm). Eventually, we will need to go to some specific countries to collect the needed samples, however, many international samples can be collected right here, in the US, since almost everyone in this country came from somewhere else. I would like to find a couple hundred individuals with Portuguese ancestry to add to our database." So Mr. Perego has asked for my help to find enough people interested in participating in this project and who can come to the Sacramento, California area and give a blood sample. This is the first message of this topic which is just to see what kind of response I can get and hope that people will quickly reply to this message who are willing to participate. But there are some restrictions and not everyone will be qualified. Here are more details: "People with good genealogies are preferred since it is vital for this research to know the exact place and date of birth of the ancestors born in other countries. I am also interested in having groups organized in Portugal and Brazil (we might be able to go to southern Brazil in July). We can travel there if there are enough people willing to participate. If someone has ancestors in Portugal or in any other country within 4 or 5 generations, this is all they need to submit with their DNA sample in order to participate. Extended pedigree charts are needed only when the ancestors immigrated many generations back in time. Only direct lines are needed (donor, 2 parents, 4 gparents, 8 ggparents, etc). Only names, places and dates of birth are needed on the pedigree." "... we need names, palces of birth and dates of birth of all the 15 individuals of the 4 generation pedigree chart shown at: http://molecular-genealogy.byu.edu/pedigree.htm." I suggested to Mr. Perego that it would be good to get a variety of people who represent all of the 9 islands of the Azores, along with Madeira, and of course the continent. And I am certain people from other areas where Portuguese settled, i.e. Macau, Brasil, Timor, Cabo Verde, etc, would be very welcome. In response to this idea, I received this comment: "... variety would be great and having people from different parts of Portugal (mainland and isles) will help us diversify the Portuguese population as well. This means that if we have enough representatives in our database from each Portuguese location, we will eventually be able to discern one place against another." For this reason, I am very excited about the possibility that we could narrow down locations so precisely. I think it would be possible to distinguish between someone from Madeira and Terceira, or Corvo and Santa Maria, etc. I think that getting a group of Portuguese together would be somewhat wasted if we didn't have a talk about something. For this reason, I suggested maybe I could talk about some aspect of genealogy. I got this response: "The idea of a lecture is great. We can begin with a lecture on Molecular Genealogy where we explain the purpose of the project. Then, as people will take turns to have their blood drawn (we can only do 6-8 at the time), you can give a lecture about genealogy." "Theoretically, based on the data that we have collected so far, we might need only 177 great-grandparents born in Portugal. This means that if we have a person that is 100% Portuguese, he/she would be the equivalent of 8 great-granparents and therefore to collect the required number, I would need 177/8 = about 23 individuals that would have complete genealogies up to the fourth generation, all born in Portugal. However, we are aware that it is very unlikely that someone in the US might have all 8 great-grandparents born in Portugal and have all the information that we need about each one of them (names, birthdates and places of birth). These 177 "genetic equivalents" can be found in a larger populations of individuals with one or more documented lines from Portugal. There is not a limit to how many we would like to have in the database. Exceeding the required number will simply help increasing the probability and the likelyhood to identify specific genetic markers for a population of origin. Also, anyone is more than welcome to participate in this project, regardless of their geographic background. The reason I am focusing on the Portuguese population is simply because you are an expert in this field of genealogy. For each population I know how many people we have and how many we might need and I am writing similar emails to other people that can help me in targetting these specific populations." ____________________ Ugo A. Perego, MS Events Coordinator Molecular Genealogy Research Project Web: http://molecular-genealogy.byu.edu Email #1: ugo@relativegenetics.com Email #2: molecular-genealogy@byu.edu Fax: (801)461-9761 or (801)378-1576 Ph: (801)461-9775, (801)378-1245 or (801)404-0653 Mail: 775 WIDB Brigham Young University Provo, UT 84602 USA ____________________ So here is my plan. I think that sometime in January 2002 would be a good time for this event. The location can be at the LDS Family History Center in Sacramento. I haven't checked, but I imagine it could instead be at the LDS library in Elk Grove or even at the LDS Stake center down the street from my home in Galt. The main thing is that it will be somewhere in the Sacramento area. There is a need for licensed nurses to draw the blood samples. I am assured by Mr. Perego that he can line that up, but my idea is that if any Portuguese nurses are out there who want to do it, that would also be great. Since it is required that all who participate have a complete genealogy back to their great-grandparents, and since everyone who wants to participate might not have such exact information, I can be hired to trace the Portuguese ancestry, if necessary. As I mentioned, I would like to see a well-rounded gathering of people with diverse Portuguese ancestry and so I will be keeping track of which areas are represented, right down to the village. I would like to see at least one person from each and every Azorean village, for example. I know this is not so realistic unless we get a very large group, but it is my theoretical goal. So if you are interested in participating, please let me know right away so I can monitor the interest and see if we can pull off this event in this area. If we can't get enough qualified participants we can't do the event, since it would not be worth the expense for them to fly out here from Utah and hire the nurses, etc. for only a handful of people. So if you don't have a complete genealogy back to your great-grandparents, but want to participate, get rolling on your research or contact me for professional help. Feel free to forward this message to anyone or any group who might be interested in this project. I hope to hear from a lot of people very soon. 1. [CASANFRA] Re: It's a Virus not Hackers
    2. No one is pretending to be someone else and there is no who that's doing this, other than the original creator of the virus who could be living in Madagascar for all we know. It's a virus that, when you download an attachment, infects your hard drive, then sends out e-mails to people who are listed in your address book, using your e-mail address as the sender, without you knowing it. If you, Susanna, had this virus, people not educated on viruses and how they work, could very well be accusing *you* of being a hacker and you, not knowing the virus had infected your computer, would have no idea what they were talking about. A *hacker* is a person who generally invades websites to extract confidential info. You can educate yourself at any of the company sites who make anti-virus software on the latest viruses and how to protect yourself. Symantec.com, McAfee.com, etc. To educate yourself on hackers just type in the word "hacker" at any browser and surf to your hearts content, there's alot out there. Hence time I have begun receiving junk mail at this email address which I reserve specifically for geneology and also, this AM I received two virus mailed to me, one subject "Oakland obituaries" - the other "DCT on John Jospeh O'Donnell". Luckily I know a virus attachment when I see one so I did not download either of these 40K viruses to my system. Whoever is doing this, PLEASE STOP now ok? What is interesting about this picture is it has 51 Woman, all dressed in white, with a stern looking gentleman in the middle of the Picture. On the very bottom of the picture it says G.H. 1906. Any ideas on what the name of this school is or where in San Francisco. I do remember gt. grandma saying she was 18 years old and they lost their home and had to live on the streets, after the 1906 earthquake. She went to Collage, so I'm lucky enough to have her in her collage book also. But grandpa Waddell who she married, graduated two years before her, at the same collage, but the school of Dentistry. Florence is the daughter of my wife's Great-Great-Grandmother Olga Helene FELT, who died 1943 in S.F. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please mail to me privately. Greetings from rainy North BAVARIA Helmut Neuner http://www.kreinberg.de
