    3. It is the Pacific Mail Steamship Co., however they also had offices in Ney York and over thirty ships "first Class" that could sail around the world in 88 days. There is a history on the company now I wish I had xeroxed. A lot of freight from souyth america. Huge import and warehouse business. They used to be a public company on the stock exchange out of New York, but through government intervention, became "publically owned" and then went down the tubes. I will try and go back to the main library soon and get the information. I had relatives that worked there too. I know where to get the data, but I'm just starting school tomorrow and also am facing an eviction before the end of the month. They want to replace my place with a new monster home. Trying to fight the good fight.... but I will deliver. You know the old addage, "If you want something done, ask a busy man". I know where to find it in the City Directory on the fifth floor. I have to refer to my notes for! the volume. It's a good read, so stay tuned. 3. I've recently found that some of us are not really aware when a county was formed - if it was an original county (formed in 1850) or a split from a parent county - so - the date of that split and the name of the parent county. I thought posting this URL might be helpful. http://www.cagenweb.com/ Luck with your research. RUTH _________________________________ Ruth(Grady)Skewis-Sacramento, CA ruth4527@mindspring.com

    3. Hi all, Marge Campbell here. I will be starting Delta College in Stockton next week, so will be going into Stockton daily. If you are willing to be patient, can try for death certificate lookups for you. Please let me know if you want an actual copy of the certified certificate.. the transcriptions are free (all hand written), but the certified copies have gone up from 10.00.. I think I paid 13.00 for the last one I got. I can also do obits, but again, allow me time (week or so), as I have to make the time to do this. And one other thing... Please keep these requests to YOUR or FREE (don't charge someone for the info I find) help you are providing to others. I volunteer my time at no charge, not fair to charge others for what I provide for free. NOTE: I do provide information to the SJGS, they may charge for the obits.. not sure what they charge, but I don't look often. (it's my donation to the society). Marge

    3. Hi- Isn't it Molloys on Old Mission Road? The place is indeed wonderful- the walls covered with old time photos of Colma and San Francisco. Best of all BART has finished the phase of construction there, and the road is clear again :o)...BTW, the Molloy family still run the place. If you are around SF St Patricks weekend (especially after the parade) visit Molloys- they have Irish music (often live) and kids step dancing. Fun! 1. [CASANFRA] Colma and Daly City
    2. Doug Urbanus
    3. I replied directly, but I'll add 2cents here. Daly City was incorporated in 1911 -- my mom road in a stagecoach celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding in 1961. It was not entirely sand dunes. Only the Westlake area was, altho high into San Bruno Mt can be found shells, etc. Indeed it was a farming area, being a refuge for at least my grandmth's family at her uncle's cabbage farm after the earthquake. Just over the southern border of Daly City in Colma is Holy Angels Parish on San Pedro Rd. Next door to the present church is the former church, converted into a hall. This structure appeared to be very old when I graduated from the parish school in 1962. There was no fire in either DC or Colma and parish records should exist. I've forgotten the DC parish name, but it's located in the "top of the hill" area just off Mission St near John Daly Drive. I might add that Daly City is now one of the ugliest places. It was not when I was a child, being liberally peppered with nurseries, sans being split in 2 by the 280 freeway. Everything done to the town seemed to be designed to destroy any charm it may have had. A roadhouse just before Mission St turns into the El Camino was summarly torn down. Not a single park was ever built, nurseries (then made of invidual glass panes) were vandalized out of existance. And lastly it inspired Malvina Reynolds to write the song "Little boxes". "Little boxes on a hillside, little boxes made of tickey tackey...and they all look just the same." A very sad legacy indeed. I would also add that anyone of Portuguese ancestry should probably check the Portuguese community center in South San Francisco. I have no idea if they have knowledge of local Portuguese history, etc., but it is modern, vibrant building at minimum.
