    3. I have an ancestor shown on the 1901 SF City Director as employed with the SP Co. as a clerk in the auditor's dept. and also on the 1900 SF census, his occupation is listed as clerk at RR station. Do any records exist that might give me additional information on this man. His name is Marshall Edgar Hotchkiss - in 1900 he was living at 534 Bush St. (a boarding house) and on the 1901 city directory it says resided at 24 & 5th. At least I think the record says 5th. Any help appreciated. Thanks Marti martiroe@pacbell.net

I'm also interested in learning about the San Francisco Veterans Welfare Board during the same period. Both names appear on a deed for 1630 25th Avenue. Any help would be much appreciated as I'm not sure where to look.

    3. I have found in my research that there are mistakes made everywhere. My father is listed twice in one of the 1920s directories, once under Guy P... and another time as Guido P... (His birth name), at different addresses. Apparently he moved and got counted again by another enumerator. The same for my grandfather who is listed in the 1890s once by his initials, J. F. Sp... at one address, and another by his middle name, Fred Sp... at a different address in the same area. I found different addresses for grandpa in the Great Registers, some of which contradicted what I found on the directories and even the US Census. I tend to believe the Great Register because he was actually there in person to register, and so the information is more likely to be correct. Sometimes I think the persons who gathered information for the directories and the census were hurried/harried, the people weren't home and they just made notes from what the neighbors said. And sometimes people did move quite often, especially single young men. So you might check the SF Great Registers. If they were citizens, and if they voted, they had to register every two years. Good luck, "rwalker"

    3. Hi again guys, Forgot to ask in my last post about Crawford Graham. Is there a city directory, any year between 1865 on up to about 1900, that lists Crawford's name along with an address? I know in the late 1800's he resided on Perry Street. Just curious when he might have moved to San Francisco. Thanx again, Cindy

    3. Hi guys, This message from Bill roddy about Crawford Graham... ...The 1879 City Directory lists: Crawford Graham, cook for the Pacific Mail Steamship Co. His residence was 26 Bluxome St. Imagine he moved to Minna later. Charles Graham was the cooper for the PMSSco. No residence given for him... I have finally found the census pages for Bluxome Street, for 1880, and found out that "Charles" Graham is the one that lives on Bluxome Street, not Crawford. Charles was listed as a cooper though. Maybe the city directory mixed the two guys up. Alas, my search continues.. Thanx fto everyone who has helped me so far. Really appreciate it. Cindy

    3. Hello list members, I have a question re: St. Brendan's Catholic Church. My cousin, the late Rev. John Nugent was the founder of this church in 1879 and it was located at Fremont and Harrison streets until at least 1919. Today, there is another St. Brendan's Church located off of Laguna Honda Blvd., stated to be established in 1929 by the late Father John M. Ryan. Does anyone know what happened to the original St. Brendan's church and also - is the "new" St. Brendan's Church a replacement for the old one or a completely different entity? I have noted that the old St. Brendan's Church would be right where the freeway entrance is now located to get on the Bay Bridge. Perhaps it was torn down for construction purposes - ? Any advice or comments greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Sue O'Donnell _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com

    3. Hi I am sending this to my Calif Contacts, so some of you who are individuals will have to delete this note, sorry, but am short on time, so this was quickest way to do this today. I have about 15 requests in the recorder's office to transcribe. I was going to get them today, but a family necessity has pre-empted my plans. I will get these Monday or Tuesday. If you are waiting for a reply from me.. it will be Wednesday before I can get the dct's out to you. Also, if you requested an obit lookup only.. I have 4 here on my desk, will upload those results tonight, or Saturday. I will be going to the Library tomorrow with the kids, and will try for a couple more from the 1800's then. It will be a learning experience for all, I am sure (9, 4, 3 yr olds)! Marge in Lodi, CA (supposed to be a wet weekend.. but so far, so good!)

    3. Hi guys, Thanx again to the people who gave me information on the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. Great history. Have another question. Thought I would look at some census reports from 1870 on but came to a screeching halt when I saw how many report pages there were for all the different sections in San Francisco. My question is, what section of San Francisco County (between what street and what street) would I find the 20 block of Bluxome Street and the 200 block of Perry Street? Trying to narrow what sections, or districts, to look at. Thanx again for any information, Cindy
