    1. [CASANFRA] census help
    2. Alan & Cindy Frankenberry
    3. Hi list, Was wondering if someone could help me with a census look up. The one page I need to see, very possibly the one I have been looking for, is not working right for ancestry.com. Here's the specs: 1900 California San Francisco County Other Townships District 27 (San Francisco city, 29th assembly district, precinct 13. Bounded by Clara, Fourth, Perry, Fifth) Page 14 (pages 13 and 15, no problem) Can someone look this up for me on a different census report? I'm looking for the address 233 Perry Street and believe it is on this page. Hopefully the person living there is Crawford Graham. Thanx in advance for your help, Cindy

    1. [CASANFRA] Goat Island
    2. Someone had posted a message about being "forced" onto a ship. This supposedly had happened to my great grandpa who ended up serving in the US Navy for 15 years. Has anyone heard of Goat Island? That is the name that my cousin had mentioned? Thanks, Jim

    1. [CASANFRA] San Francisco 1907 Disappearance
    2. Loder Family
    3. Family lore says our great grandfather (Eppa T. Bartlett) was "shanghaid" in San Francisco in 1907 and probably put on a ship to work as a seaman. He was 20 years old at that time. He left behind a wife and a baby. According to family stories that was quite common during that period of time. I have been trying to research his disappearance but haven't really found any history to substantiate this story other than he did seem to disappear and I haven't found him in any records past 1907. Does anyone have any ideas where I might be able to find out more information regarding similar disappearances or any place that might actually have records. Nancy

    3. Hi Nancy, Follow these links to the last one - it might shed some light on the goings on at the SF Barbary coast (where the shanghaiing went on...). For anything San Francisco... start at this CA GenWeb site http://www.sfo.com/~timandpamwolf/sfrancty.htm From menu on left select History of San Francisco http://www.sfo.com/~timandpamwolf/sfhist.htm From this site select books/Barbary Coast http://www.zpub.com/sf50/sf/ From here, scroll down to "God help the poor sailor - Chapter 9 http://www.zpub.com/sf50/sf/hbtbcidx.htm I have a copy of the book that this article came from "THE BARBARY COAST", by Herbert Asbury, pub 1933 - it has an index but I don't find your Eppa T. Bartlett. I really think this index would NOT list every poor soul that was shanghaied - but rather others involved in this "business"... Sure hope you stop to visit some of the other spots along the path I just gave you - LOTS of good stuff there! Hope this helps, RUTH _________________________________ Ruth(Grady)Skewis-Sacramento, CA ruth4527@mindspring.com > -----Original Message----- > From: Loder Family [mailto:loderfam@mchsi.com] > Sent: Wednesday, February 20, 2002 4:50 PM > To: CASANFRA-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [CASANFRA] San Francisco 1907 Disappearance > > > Family lore says our great grandfather (Eppa T. 3. Nancy There was a book written a few years ago, on this subject, by a man in San Francisco. Not sure if he had names listed or not. There might be crew lists that you could check at the Maritime Library or at N.A.R.A., to see if you could find his name. Hope this is of some help. 3. Margie, It would seem to me that any "list" of those cremated remains is public record. Therefore, all you need to do is send a request under the California Public Records Act, requesting to 1) review or 2) receive a copy for a copying fee. I don't know why these counties keep doing this. This is all public record. Those cremations were paid for by public funds, the county hospitals were all paid for by public funds. The public has a right to access these types of records WITHOUT restrictions. A patients right to privacy dies with the patient. 1. Re: [CASANFRA] RE: CA Prison Inmate Index
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Jim, The Inmate Registers were prison specific. Which prison did you receive information from? In 1900, there were only two prisons in California - San Quentin and Folsom. At Folsom, the Inmate Registers are alphabetical, but chronologically listed within each letter of the alphabet. This means that each request that does not have specific information as to when the inmate was received and processed into the prison requires a thorough review of the registers pages until the name is located. Often there are duplicate names so it is important to know from which County they were sentenced. Sometime around the late 1890s, Folsom also acted to hold Federal inmates - mail fraud, etc. They came in not only from California but also from Oregon and Nevada. 1. [CASANFRA] RE: CA Prison Inmate Index
    2. I received the information from my query to the CA State Archives today. It only took 2 weeks for them to process my request and return the info to me. What I received was a copy of the index page, listing 10 persons, from the book they log the prisoners into the prison. The book is chronological by date and the page runs from July 19, 1911, to July 24, 1911. The information on each person listed is as follows: Name and Number - Nativity- Crime - When Received - Term of Sentence- County Sent From - Age - Occupation - Height-Complexion - Color Eyes- Color Hair - Remarks - plus some notes KEY Dis = Discharged Res = Restored N = Notes ? = unreadable word John HENDERSON 25081/ Ill/ Burg-2nd/ Jul 19, 1911/ 5y/ Alameda/ 36/ 5'7/ Med/ Blue/ Dk Bro/ Out as ? 7-29-1911 - Res 8-11-1911 - Dis 2-19-1915 - Res Edward GALLAGHER 25082/ OH/ Petty Larceny ?/ 7-19-1911/ 1y/ Sutter/ 36/ Boilermaker/ 5'9/ Med/ Blu/ Gry Mixed/ Dis & Res 5-19-1912/ N - 4 months Yuba Co, broke Jail Dan Ruiz 25083/ TX/ Rape/ 7-20-1911/ 8y/ Alameda/ 20/ Machinist/ 5'5/ Florid/ Bro/ Black/ Dis & Res 11-20-1916 Carl SMITH 25084/ Germany/ Grand Larceny/ 7-21-1911/ San Fran/ 21/ Clerk & Laborer/ 5'7/ Fair/ Blue/ Dk Bro/ Dis & Res 2-21-1915/ N- Violated probation on above charge. Though the person I am looking for was not the one listed, this appears to be a very valuable tool for researchers if you think your person was in the CA Prison System in the earlier part of the 1900s. If any on the list makes a connection with the above names I would gladly forward you a copy of the page. My next step will be to check on old records in San Francisco to see if his fingerprints were entered into the system from there. Jim in OR

    3. I just put my Uncle's name and birthdate in this website and there were zero results. I have a copy of his WWI Draft Registration sent to me by the San Bruno office of NARA. So if your relative is not on this website you still may be able to get a copy by inquiring at National Archives and Records Administration, Pacific Region, 1000 Commodore Drive, San Bruno, Ca. 94066-2350. www.nara.gov/regional. 1. [CASANFRA] Urns at SJ county Hospital- there is a list of names..update
    2. Margie Campbell
    3. Hi everyone: I spoke with a gentleman today who is connected with the county hospital in French Camp. He says there is a list of names, but hesitates to release them in whole. He will check for names (from about 1920-40 ), if you can provide a name and date. Need not be exact date.. but close, so he can check. Most were paupers, and families could not bury them.. why they ended up at county hospital & not rural cemetery, etc.. is not clear. He did agree that some could have been state hospital deaths, but is not certain, but the dates are right (after the State hospital abandoned the old cemeteries of their own). The 40 graves on the property were moved to Lodi Memorial Cemetery here in Lodi. ALL of these urns were left in the building at the county hospital. Someone intervened and it was decided to just leave them there. The county Hospital may have a list of names also, if you can prove your person died during that timeframe. I have a few death certificate copies that show County Hospital deaths, I am going to submit these names to Steve, to see if this is where they are (the few without burial information). If you have an ancestor who may have been sent to county hospital from another area due to lack of funds during the 1920-40 period, and you can't find a burial place... may want to see if they could be one of these urns. I don't have the hospital number in front of me, but you can get it online... they have a webpage.
