    1. [CASANFRA] Fleet Street in S.F.
    2. George Rushton
    3. While doing a looking for someone, I found that a business, that person I was looking for was in 1877-78 at 11 and 13 Dupont Street,in San Francisco. In the 1878-79, one it was at 11 and 13 Fleet Street. So I checked the street guide and found the following: Fleet (that portion of Dupont from Market to Bush was named Fleet by Ordinance of the Board of Supervisors, but recently the original name has been restored by Act of Legislature. So if in the 1878-79 City Directory, you find some one at Fleet Street, now you know where it was for few months. George __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. [CASANFRA] 1870 Federal census for Santa Clara County is now completed and online..
    2. Edward A. Black, Sr.
    3. I wanted to share with all the fact that I have completed in full and have online the entire 1870 Federal Census for Alameda County. I accomplished that when I completed Ward 2 of the City of San Jose and had it moved over this morning. I started this project about May, 2001 with the goal of putting online a county I lived in for several years for the benifit of all researchers. I firmly believe it will be of tremendous help to many. So after all these months I am very pleased to finally share this news. I am continuing on now with transcribing the census covering Marin County for 1870 [most of which I have already completed and have online as well]. I will also be starting my largest challenge--the transcription of the 1870 Federal Census for San Francisco [all 12 Wards], which will likely take a couple of years to complete as it is so huge....I will keep all informed as I progress through them as well.. The 1870 Santa Clara Census transcription is at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cenfiles/ca/santaclara/1870/ It is my belief that this will help researchers a lot. Sincerely, Edward, Sr. [a native of Alameda County, born in Oakland]

    1. [CASANFRA] RE: Ambassador DeLong Family
    2. Sandra Harris
    3. I was able to obtain the obituaries and other information for you. Will be mailing to you shortly. Highlights: Mrs. Chas. DE LONG (Elida F. VINEYARD) died 9-25-1895. She was the widow of Charles E. DE LONG, who during Grant's term was appointed US minister to Japan and held this office from 1869 to 1873. Mrs. DE LONG was born in Madison WI in 1814, the daughter of Col VINEYARD. Her father came to CA across the pains and located in the southern part of the State. In 1862 she married Mr. DE LONG. She was one of the first white women who, as a Minister's wife, was received at the Mikado's court. She was sister-in-law to the unfortunate Lt. G. W. DE LONG who had command of the New York Hearld Polar expedition that sailed from San Francisco on the "Jeannette" in July of 1879. His vessel was crushed in an ice pack and he, with Surgeon AMBLER and 13 of his crew, perished in the Artic. Mr. DE LONG died in 1876 leaving her a great deal of money and property, but she was tricked by a number of individuals who made claims against the estate and almost beggared herself and her children. She leaves 5 children: Lillian M. (Lillie) DE LONG (Mrs. John E. SAVAGE) the husband died in SF 10/13/1919 mother of Mrs. Dr. Robert C. JACKSON, Mrs. E. E. BARTHOLOMEW, Grace L. 3. Hi Pete (again) I checked my 1880 Census index for H. W. Beers and found this listing. I figure, with this, you can go to the actual census (see FHL film number below) and see were he was located. Actual census will probably mention the church by name - at least it will give you the address - He is a "clergyman" on this index.. 1. [CASANFRA] Stockton in the 1880's
    2. Hello All, I have a letter from my ggrandfather, Robert Buchanan Curtis b. March 4, 1873, and need some clarification. He wrote this letter himself to his employer, John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance. The notes in quotes I added for clarity. "At age 13(just orphaned) I was sent to California(1886) where I lived on a ranch - attended school in the winter time and did a man's work until I was about 17. When I finished Public School, I took a business College Course at Stockton, Calif., and graduated and then attended a Normal Institue - there until I was 21 when I returned to New York and entered the Dry Goods business with my brother." My questions are: Is anyone aware of a ranch that would also be a orphanage? What college would be in Stockton in the 1880's and what is a Normal Institute? It is a mystery as to why he was sent to California when he had family in NY. Thank you, Linda

    3. Now this is a real shame. The Musee Mecanique is such a part of every San Franciscan's childhood - the only things left for public view from Playland at the Beach. They should be bought by the City for permanent display.I'm really upset after reading the article! Being someone who watches antique shows on tv, I realize that the collection could be sold for an amazingly great deal of money but so many people and their children will be losing such a great example of San Francisco history.I hope the Zelinskis will change their minds on this. 2. George Rushton
    3. First I want to apology, if you get this on multiple lists, but felt the more people that know the better. I found this in the February issue of the "California Monthly", the magazine of the California Alumni Association. If you or a family member when to U.C. Berkeley, "CAL", in the 1950's there is a good chance that you or they had a photo taken by Perry Ives, who had a studio near Sather Gate in the 1950's, before the construction of the Student Union eliminated that block of Telegraph Avenue. Perry mostly photographed Cal students and friends, many of whom were sorority and fraternity members. Though Perry has long since retired from photography and lives in Denver, his retoucher and close friend Bill Brain of Pleasant Hill is offering to distribute the negatives to former customers or others who might be interested. Unclaimed negatives will destroyed in the summer of 2002. Contact Bill at (925) 686-2031 or e-mail Bfbrain@aol.com So who knows maybe he has a old photo of you or a family member, but remember I DO NOT ANY THING MORE THAT THIS, ABOUT THE PHOTOS. I have the copy of my grandfather's application for citizenship which gives the ship "La Savoie" out of Havre France, and the date of arrival. He is not on the Ellis Island site. There is an alternate site created by Morse which I think has been posted here before. In it he discusses the incompleteness and what is missing. This particular sailing of the La Savoie is not there. Which means, I guess that you have to locate the records at NARA. His site is also good for locating names that may have been misspelled. My uncle Luigi was spelled "Luiji"---not too different but he happens to have a common last Italian name also. I found his name and the manifest, which showed that it was him, on the Morse site. Same with Luigi's wife and daughter when they came over later. For some reason the wife does not come up under either her maiden or married name but they are both on the manifest. I did find her through the Morse site by the child's name, which was misspelled, "Carmelo" instead of Carmelita. So do check out this site if you are having trouble with the original Ellis Island site. It takes you into it, but via a different set of parameters. The person filling out the manifest incorrectly listed several passengers on a page intended for Aliens whereas my person (although born in Ireland) was a naturalized citizen. The first time I checked there were two listings, the Alien page with a line through the entry ( but it was legible )and then another a few pages on with him on the "Citizens" page. When I searched for him last night instead of the Alien page image coming up it says "not available". The other is still there. Now while this may have been " housekeeping" it is a pity because the column headings and therefore the information recorded for Aliens was different than for citizens and had additional information. Given that this is a site geared towards genealogy they should realize that even information gained by mistake is valuable to us and shouldn't be removed. He is still listed twice on the search results! Has anyone figured out how to print the right hand side of the original manifest page? if so please do share:-) Gwen
