I recently learned that a family member, James A. Miller, moved from KY to San Francisco, CA about 1870. His wife died in Oakland, CA in April 1876. (Mary Brown Miller). Now I know that James A. Miller died Oct. 8, 1900, and would like to find an obituary for him. I'm also thinking that since he had about 5 children still living at this time that he probably left a will. His children were Susan Miller b. 5/1/1844 d. 9/17/1886, Oakland, CA m. William W. Shaw b. 1/19/1838 d. 8/14/1918, Berkeley, CA James A. Miller b. 11/16/1846 d. 12/1/1918, Riverside, CA m. Hattie Elam (no dates available) Mary E. Miller, m. James Lyman ( I believe they stayed in KY) Noble Butler Miller b. 1850 d. 1876 San Francisco, CA Octavia Miller m. Robert H. Fletcher in 1878 San Francisco, CA Joseph C. Miller William W. Miller b. 6/20/1864 d. 2/29/1940 San Francisco, CA m. Henrietta Russell d. 11/6/1947, San Francisco, CA Can anyone tell me where I might be able to send for copies of the obits for these people or where I might obtain a copy of the will of James A. Miller? Is there a local library that will do obit lookups for a reasonable fee plus the copying cost? Since I live in PA it is rather difficult to find information so far away. Thank you for any and all information. Barb Miller Patterson Fayette Co., PA
Hello all, Thank you for the help I have received on this list. I don't know what took me so long to sign up. I am seeking a marriage record/information on John Daniel O'Brien (III) b. 12/301897 and Lucille Adrene Heidt b. 6/291899 It looks like they must have married in SF. Lucille's parents were Phillip Heidt and Emma Doidge Heidt. John's father was John Daniel O'Brien (II) and I need his mother's name. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it. Hi list, On the 1900 census for San Francisco, can someone tell me what the enumeration district number would be for the address 1105 Van Ness Avenue? I have found a few areas of Van Ness by looking at the description of the district on the census but nothing close to 1105. Thank you very much for your help, Cindy
Hello. I need more help on SF census 1870 one more time for my great aunt Maria Silva as a daughter of Antone(Antonio) and Amelia(?) Silva. Put any mother's name on e mail because Amelia is no such as a name for some reasons. Maria Silva was born on July,1869 in San Francisco. She should be less one years old at that time of 1870 for census. Antone and Amelia Silva have been missing from 1870 to 1920 for census. They might lived in Daly City, San Mateo County because of Spanish and Portuguese community. SF is part of San Mateo County and Oakland possibly. There is a lot of Marys and Marias. Take your time. With your help is appreciatted. Thank you very much. Adrienne Stefanik San Pedro, CA Get more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com
Hi all; Time for our weekly "What's Happening" on the website. So here is what is going on: First of all, those that have WebTV have been having problems accessing the site as it is too wide for their set. We are aware of this, although there is nothing that we can do as the template and the amount of information on it are too wide. This is similar to the several other sites that you cannot access for the same reason. I apologize for this inconvenience, but there is no way to correct this. * * * * * Now for the good stuff... The following counties or partials have been completed: Butte Book One Colusa Book One and Two Los Angeles Book Two Madera Marin Book One and Two Mariposa Mendocino Riverside San Benito San Bernardino Book One San Diego The following Counties are in the transcriptions phase: Amador Butte Book Two Humboldt Kern Los Angeles Books One, Three, Four, Five and Six Nevada Orange Placer San Bernardino Book Two San Francisco Books One and Two San Luis Obispo Santa Barbara Siskiyou Sutter Tehama Tulare The counties that have been ordered are: Fresno Lake Modoc Shasta Yolo Yuba IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE COUNTY YOU ARE LOOKING FOR, GO TO THE WEBSITE AND THE FRONT PAGE WILL TELL YOU THE STATUS OF THAT COUNTY. * * * * * Several people have asked if we would do lookups. Unfortunately, our answer has to be no as the records are spread all over the US in various stages of transcription. Also, unfortunately, you will have to wait till they are online. The volunteers are typing as fast as their little fingers can go and we are getting the records online within days of completion of a book or county. Sorry, but you have waited this long, a little longer and you can look. * * * * * Speaking of volunteers, we have over 100 working on this project. Understand that these records are old (100+ years) and sometimes hard to read. Also understand that we think this project is really important because the records are only required to be kept from 1905 forward. Anything before that time can be gotten rid of WITHOUT NOTICE because they were not required. One we have them online, they cannot take them away from us and they are free for the looking. All of our volunteers are incredibly special people to help with this project and donate their time and efforts. Periodically there are a few that really stand out and I think they deserve special mention. First is Betty Vickroy. Betty must have the fastest fingers in town. She has completed six full batches and is still going. She has worked in San Diego, Riverside, Los Angeles and Nevada counties, as well as typed ALL of Marin county. She is my "pinch hitter" when I only need one more batch in a county or when somebody has given up on trying to transcribe a certain batch. She is one incredible lady and GREATLY appreciated by all. We also have Sharon Dulcich, who not only got us access to Kern County records, but photo'd all of them and now is transcribing all of them. She deserves a definite extra pat on the back for all this effort that she has put forth. We have Dorothy Oksner, who not only helped to sponsor Santa Barbara County, but is coordinating the genealogical society there to do all the transcribing and staying on top of them all to help to make sure that all is going well. Thank you Dorothy for all you are doing. Beverly Stone has been working with El Dorado County, which she accessed the records for and is currently transcribing all by herself. She is also working with Sacramento county to get copies of those registers for us so that we can get those transcribed and online as well. Thank you Beverly for all your work. There are several others...including those who don't even live in California. We have transcribers in Washington, Nevada, Oklahoma, Virginia, Arizona, Kansas, Idaho, Utah, Missouri, Oregon and Louisiana. And we have received donations from all over the world for this project. We thank you all for your wonderful help and generous time. We are currently working with Richard Finn, President of the Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society to sponsor and transcribe the balance of the records for Alameda county. We hope this will turn out as well. * * * * * Donations for this project can be sent to the myself, the project coordinator at the address below. There is lots more to do and funding is required to cover the costs of copies of these records and postage to get the info to the transcriptionists. Your help, no matter how big or little, is desperately needed and incredibly appreciated. * * * * * For those of you that still do not know about the project, let me give you a brief rundown. We are working on getting all the records, from all counties, for the pre-1905 period online. We are currently working on the deaths and then will be working on the marriages and birth records. The website can be viewed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905 We have been working on the project since the beginning of the year (just a little over two months) and have managed to get quite a bit done, thanks to all the donors and volunteer transcriptionists. If you think you can help, feel free to contact me by email. So....that is all for another week. Will keep you posted as new counties go online, etc. Till next week, Donna Bradley Project Coordinator Pre-1905 Project P. O. Does anyone know where the records for the Native Sons and Daughters Center for Homeless Children in San Francisco are? Was it part of the the Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West, which I believe is now the "Native Sons?" Would a local Historical Society or library or government office have them? This adoption agency was in operation from at least WWI to at least WWII. An adult woman who is related to my wife had dealings with this agency, and may be the only hard information we have of her before she disappeared. If anyone has access to a 1910 or 1920 SF Census Index I would appreciate a look up for a child named Vance C. Bartlett or a woman named Mattie/Hattie Bartlett (his grandmother). I have access to the census pages but without an index it is painstaking to try to find them. Vance could be with Bartlett's or O'Connell's or by 1920 could be with the Chris Carstensen household. Any help with Enumeration district, page number, etc. would help me look them up. Many thanks. Nancy LOder

[This is being resent (corrected). I had an error in the previous message] I wanted to share with all the fact that I have completed in full and have online the entire 1870 Federal Census for Santa Clara County. I accomplished that when I completed Ward 2 of the City of San Jose and had it moved over this morning. I started this project about May, 2001 with the goal of putting online a county I lived in for several years for the benifit of all researchers. I firmly believe it will be of tremendous help to many. So after all these months I am very pleased to finally share this news. I am continuing on now with transcribing the census covering Marin County for 1870 [most of which I have already completed and have online as well]. I will also be starting my largest challenge--the transcription of the 1870 Federal Census for San Francisco [all 12 Wards], which will likely take a couple of years to complete as it is so huge....I will keep all informed as I progress through them as well.. The 1870 Santa Clara Census transcription is at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cenfiles/ca/santaclara/1870/ It is my belief that this will help researchers a lot. Sincerely, Edward, Sr. [a native of Alameda County, born in Oakland]
Just to let you know....Los Angeles Book Two is online. http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905 Donna
I believe I was able to help with this one, though it took some playing around with the index on the LDS cds. Since John D O'brien had a distinctive occupation, I was able to identify him on the 1889, 1890, 1901 and 1915 city directories also. Hi Kris, Donna is right below. I have conducted research in SF for a long time and there are tons of O'Briens listed in the microfilm newspapers. While doing my research, I may have run across yours too. Wait on the project that Donna is doing and you should be able to find something useful. I'm waiting for some information too. I'm helping transcribe for Donna and I'm sure she will get the data up as soon as she can. Kris; I can't do a lookup, but I can tell you that in the process of doing the pre-1905 deaths, we have come across the name O'Brien. Your proof may be there, but unfortunately, you will have to wait until it gets on line. It is currently in transcription phase. (That is about the right time period too). This is not a teaser, just something to look forward to. I found that my great grandpa resided at 803 Golden Gate Avenue in San Francisco in the 1900 Census, although he was recorded as being on the USS Quiros in Cavite, Phillipines. I have not been able to find him in the San Francisco Directory for the period from 1889-1904 nor have I been able to find him the Great Index (Voter Reigistration Rolls). Does anyone have any suggestions for other records where he may be listed. He was in the US Navy during this period. Did the Navy have voter registration rolls? His name was Otto William Bayerd. Thank you. Jim
