    1. [CASANFRA] quick response from Medical Examiner

    3. Hi Listers, I want to thank George Rushton for directing me to the SF Medical Examiner's web page http://www.sfgov.org/med_examiner/ I sent them a request for the Coroner's report regarding the death of my Uncle Douglas at age 8 in 1925 (run over by a Ford Model T truck). Before a week was out I had the report in my hands! It was very sad to read it. It is only 2 pages but contains all sorts of details (for example, died the day after the accident from fractured skull and pelvis and ruptured liver. They brought him first to Park Emergency Hospital, moved him to Mission Hospital, then to S.F. Hospital where he died). I was really impressed with how responsive they were. Thanks again George for linking me up with them. Linda Hamid Roseville, California

    1. [CASANFRA] S. Tilden DAKEN in the History of Sonoma County
    2. Sandra Harris
    3. To Bonnie in San Rafael CA mailto:Bonportnoy@aol.com I have copied your request and quite a bit more. The NDGW pages I copied had many apparent errors but I have tried to correct them to align with the vital statistics information. You will have figure it out for yourself. Perhaps you have more information that will make sense of all of the conflicting dates. Highlights: S. T. DAKEN, well-known artist of Santa Rosa, was born in Bunker Hill, Macoupin County, IL in 1876. He was the son of Henry and Deluska (WEEKS) DAKEN, natives of Canada and St. Louis MO, respectively. As a child, he came to CA with his parents and the family settled first in Sacramento. At the age of nine he began to learn the trade of decorator and fresco painter, following this in San Francisco for many years. He devoted his entire time to painting and sketching, opening a studio on Van Ness avenue in San Francisco. As a result of the earthquake and fire, he removed to Glen Ellen Sonoma County and then to Santa Rosa where he opened an art studio. He conducted classes there until he took the position as an art instructor at Ursuline College. He was married in 1904 and is the father of two children, Edna May and Sidney T. (notation from NDGW says Sidney was also an artist) However, obituary says he was survived by two daughters. Sidney could be a male or female name. Samuel Tilden DAKIN died of cancer at age 59 in Georgetown, El Dorado County, on May 3 1935. His obituary notes he was born in June, 187.. It lists him as a native of Massachusetts, well-known San Francisco and Mill Valley submarine artist. In 1926 his work was praised in a story and illustration of him was published in a magazine of nationwide circulation. His landscape paintings were studied by a group of scientists in Washington DC. He was survived by his wife, two daughters and two brothers. 1880 Census Place: Sacramento, Sacramento, California Source: FHL Film 1254071 National Archives Film T9-0071 Page 207C Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Henry DAKEN Self M M W 52 CAN Occ: Carriage Maker Fa: CAN Mo: CAN Dora DAKEN Wife F M W 38 OH Occ: Keeping House Fa: OH Mo: OH Clay A. Also for women, widows with the name of their husbands, or women who were working. Now in the Oakland Directories, I have also found students, for remember they also covered Berkeley, and the nice thing some times in those directories I have also found the date of death of a man. --- Bob and Mary Specht <rasmas@spiritone.com> wrote: > Hi George > Yes we had located Rudolph in the 1886-87-88 San > Francisco Directories, actually that is how I > learned of him, and some years his address is the > same as my GGM so I assume he was some realative. 3. S.F. O'Donnell wrote: > I just heard that the 1930 census is due to be released on April 1, > 2002. *yippee* (heard this on C-SPAN)! That's the good news :-) Unfortunatly, there is some not-so-good news, too. California isn't indexed. Only 12 southern states are fully or partially indexed. It's going to be much more of a challenge to find our folks than for some previous census years. Here is the url for NARA's information page on the 1930 census release: http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/1930cen.html One section I highly recommend you pay special attention to is Part 5: Tutorial: "Start Your 1930 Census Research Now!" As I announced in February, NARA in San Bruno has been offering 1930 census workshops. I attended one of them, and found it to be very helpful (believe me, this census is not going to be an easy one to use, so we'll need all the help we can get!). The "Preparing for 1930" workshops have all passed now, but there will be several "Census Research Including 1930 US Census Records" workshops in April, May and June. If you're in the SF area, I highly recommend you try to attend one of them. For the list of workshop dates for NARA in San Bruno, see: http://www.sfo.com/~timandpamwolf/nara2002.htm At the workshop I attended, we were advised that NARA expects pretty large crowds for the first several months at least, so they will most likely strictly enforce the two-hour limit on microfilm readers. If you read the online tutorial mentioned above, you'll see that there are several things you might be able to do in advance of your trip in order to save yourself precious minutes on the microfilm reader. I honestly think that if you show up without having done any preparation, you will come away very frustrated and dissapointed at the end of your two-hour time limit. I highly recommend you do whatever you can in advance as outlined in the tutorial! If you aren't in the SF area, but are near another NARA branch, check with them to see if they're offering any similar workshops. You might also check with your local genealogical societies to see if they plan any seminars/workshops. I don't want to seem to discourage everyone, but after having attended one of these workshops, I can't stress enough that the 1930 census for the unindexed states is going to be difficult, and will take some know-how and preparation in order to use them effectively. But then, genealogists don't often shy away from such challenges! I'll bet those jubilant shouts of "I FOUND THEM!" will just be all that much louder in research rooms all over the country as we search for our families in this census! :-) Good luck and have fun everyone! 2. Doug Urbanus
    3. Since the work I used to do entailed helping people get birth records, I would generally say always avoid going to the state record level if at all possible. Sacramento has always been particularly poor. New York State was particularly obnoxious, cashing checks and letting requests age for months. Vital records are cash cows no matter what jurisdiction. Historically the Santa Cruz County Recorder's office, for example, has had an income in excess of $1.5 million. Fees not only fully (under)fund the deparment but provide services for battered women and children, and the general fund.

    2. I gave a private answer to the question about whether to go to a county for records or to Sacramento. I gave my personal horror story, with all dates. And after all that, I was told turn over times were 4 - 6 months. Since then, it would appear that the situation is worse. Other states do not have the option of going to the state source or the county. You send your info to the state source, and get your reply within one month. And, if they cannot find the record, they send back your check. My experience with Sacramento was horrible, and they kept the money.

Lots of good things are happening. We have gotten funding for Alameda County from the Livermore - Amador Genealogical Society and they will be helping with transcription although we will be working on it as well. We have also gotten the balance of our funding for San Francisco County from a very generous man in Australia. Also appears as we may be able to trade some info on San Francisco with another genealogical society who has done some we haven't and vice versa. Things are jumpin'. > >We have gotten Lake County and Modoc County out for transcription, Kern County done and soon to be online and naturally much more of San Francisco scheduled to go online as soon as proofing, etc gets done. We have had some questions about Sacramento County getting online, which is in the near future, but we are at the funding stage there and would like to get some of those pending online. We have about a dozen counties where the records are ordered and over 20 counties with over 30 volumes being transcribed right now. We want to get some of those done before we get another big county going (I can't find room for more files on my desk at the moment). 3. Hi everyone, I find this idea of a one year backlog pretty fascinating. In 1990-1994, IBM was working on what was called the Vital Records Improvement Project for the State. Part of this project was to created an OCR software system wherein all the old vital statistics certificates archived by the State could be scanned in and retrieved through any number of search criteria. Both the State and IBM spent millions on this project. Now they say there's a 12 month backlog? What's wrong with this picture?
