    1. [CASANFRA] SF Sewers 1875; do not read before eating
    2. Bill Roddy
    3. This is a scathing Municipal Reports story on the sewage system for 1875 with engineering drawings on improvements proposed. All sewers drained directly into the Bay. At low tide the waterfront became a cesspool. Men and boys were lowered into the sewers to clean out the sludge with buckets. Bill http://americahurrah.com/

    1. [CASANFRA] DCT/Obit request for HAUSER
    2. Wanda K. Smith
    3. I would like to request a DCT and or obituary for Seymour (Sam) Simon Hauser. He was born April 27 in 1899 or 1901(the records aren’t clear) outside of the US and died Feb 25 1984 in San Francisco. He was in the jewelry business and from what I have heard of him ran a real nice shop. He belonged to several clubs and such. I have a picture of him with my Aunt and grandparents taken at the Bimbo Club in the late 50’s. I’d like to learn as much as possible about their life there in town. Thanks in advance for the help, Wanda

    3. I used to announce the NBC dance band remotes at Bimbos. Remember in particular Ted Lewis Orchestra. After the shows Gino used to take me and the engineer to the bar and tell the bartender, "Give these guys whatever they want." After a few drinks it was off to the Papagayo Room at the Fairmount Hotel for great Mexican food at midnight. Wonderful days. 3. Oh my goodness - this is so outstanding!!! Wonderful work George!! This following the great job done by Doug at age 18 and his little "bro"!!! Looks like I had the wrong BURNETT (John M and Ellen Casey BURNETT) as possible parents of this child. WELLINGTON CLEVELAND BURNETT & wife also have bios with their pictures in HISTORY OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY REGION. Wellington BURNETT's wife is called Jane Cromwell Cleveland (a Mayflower descendant) Burnett in these bios. Doug, I wonder if you would like copies of these bios, with pictures of the parents of the child who's stone you rescued to add to your now wonderful collection - you have the little guy's Death Notice!!! This IS really "cool" as Pam says! I would like to share this story with the researcher on the Mariposa List who is a member of this BURNETT family - can I? 3. I thought I'd read on this list sometime back that some of the stones had been used for rip-rap or a water break. Still, I think it's a great idea to recover them. Someone ought to tap into one of the local monument dealers to see if they have a truck mounted crane or winch. If you could winch them closer in, you could use the crane to load them on the truck. Someone ought to find out if they could be stored or placed at a local museum and then find out the history about the name on the stone. Boy, wish I lived there. What a wonderful project. Could you imagine what would be said if all of us went tombstone hunting at low tide? That would really gather the media's attention. If people take care of a portion of the freeway, why can't their be "Tombstone Guardians"? 3. What a heartwarming story - so remarkable for an 18 year old and 9 year old to spend time on - guess that is what kept you out of trouble back in the olden days. Thank you for sharing this story. PETER H. BURNETT (1807-1895) was the first constitutional governor of California under American rule. He had several children - one was JOHN M. BURNETT (1838-1916). I have bio's on these two men in my copy of HISTORY OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY REGION - by Bailey Millard, pub 1924. The bio on JOHN M. BURNETT states; "John M. BURNETT and wife, ELLEN CASEY (1842- ) had nine children, two of whom died in infancy......." What do you think - a connection?? Could that stone that you recovered be for (CH)ARLES CLEVELAN(D) BURNETT???? There is a List member on the Mariposa List who is related to this family, Can I forward this post on to her... Thanks again "boys" good deed, great story, wonderful of you to share with us...
