I have articles from the San Francisco Chronicle and The Bulletin dated Oct 18 ,1915 about them. They had 2 children Marion 5 and James 3. Any help would be appreciated Thanks, Laura.... 1. [CASANFRA] tombstone addendum and where you might find more!
    2. Doug Urbanus
    3. For those interested in locating where the Charles Cleveland Bernett tombstone was found here's the scoop. I consulted with my younger brother David Urbanus (who was 13, not 9, making me 22 and the find 32 years ago). Lands End was too generic. It actually was at Lincoln Park. We skirted the golf course above a cliff edge and descended a narrow gorge. He recalls that the tombstone was buried partially in the mud. There were lots of large granite pieces around which I waded. Neither he nor I recall whether there were other tombstones visible or accessible, and what the tide conditions were. In any case with the slick and slippery gorge making it almost impossible to bring it up, we couldn't have handled anything bigger. The rescue was NOT planned. It weighs just under 100 lbs., is 17" h, 12" w and 6" d.

    1. [CASANFRA] pre-1905 weekly update
    2. Hi all; Time for the weekly update. No, you will not notice any changes on the website yet, but they are coming and major ones when they do. As soon as Steve and Aaron get all the work done and it all uploaded which could be anyday now, you will see the following additions: Sources for all the counties which have been completed. The following new areas for lookup: Parts of Amador County Parts of Del Norte County Parts of Humboldt County Kern County Lake County More in Los Angeles County Modoc County Parts of Nevada County Placer County The Rest of San Bernardino County More San Francisco County San Luis Obispo County Parts of Santa Barbara County Sutter County Parts of Tehama County And possibly even more. We are getting a lot done, but with all the problems that we have been having on the website, we are on a holding pattern for your lookups so that we can get everything solved and online. Other Counties currently in the transcription phase are: Alameda County Parts of Fresno County Klamath County Monterey County Orange County Parts of Plumas County Santa Cruz County Shasta County Parts of Sierra County Tulare County And more of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Butte, etc. We now have over 130 transcribers on this project and will soon be breaking into the marriage and birth records for transcription. We are in the process of designing the templates for those now. Please be patient and soon I will be announcing that all the changes are complete and the site has all the updates. In the meantime, we are continuing with the transcription of several counties and are rapidly acquiring more records to be transcribed, thanks to all those that have contributed to the project to help acquire the copies of these records. Donations for the project can be made out to me and sent to me at the address below. One more time, I am going to ask that you NOT request lookups during the transcription phase of this project. We keep getting requests and there is no way that we can comply. It will not be that long till all these are online and available for you to search. PLEASE BE PATIENT. Thank you for your understanding. Not much more to say right now. I ran away for a couple days to recollect my sanity and for some R + R so I can get back into this with more enthusiasm. (Sorry guys, but if you had my job, you would definitely understand the necessity for that). If you have any questions regarding the project, or suggestions or ideas, feel free to contact me and I will get back to you as soon as I possibly can. Till next week..... 1. [CASANFRA] SF KEEPER OF THE CITY CEMETERY REPORT-1878-79
    2. carolyn
    3. To the Honorable Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco: Gentlemen: I have the honor to herewith submit to your Honorable Body a report of the affairs of the City Cemetery for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1879. The lots donated by your Honorable Body, during the past twelve months, to the following benevolent societies: Ohabai Shalome, Master Mariners', Italian Benevolent, Netherland and Congregation Sherith Israel, have been improved and inclosed with picket fences, as ordered by resolution of your Board. I would respectfully call the attention of your Honorable Body to the following much needed improvements: The main avenue of the Cemetery is greatly in need of macadamizing; its present sandy condition rendering it difficult of passage, both to pedestrians and carriages. This much-needed improvement could be made at a merely nominal expense, as there is a fine quarry of red stone at one side of the entrance, from which the macadam can be obtained. Several of the societies have signified a desire to improve the avenues surrounding their lots; and are but awaiting the improvement of the main avenue. The rail fence surrounding the Cemetery should be rebuilt, as many of the posts have decayed at their base. I would suggest that a picket fence be built on the front or southerly side, which, if whitewashed, would add greatly to the improvement and appearance of the Cemetery- the present fence could be utilized in the repairing of that at the read and sids of the grounds. The house of the Keeper should be repaired and renovated, as it is ia very dilapidated condition; and without a much needed office for the transaction of the business of the Cemetery. As a matter of economy the above improvements should be made with a protracted delay. During the year the expenses of the Cemetery have been as follows- Cost of head and foot boards...............$534.50 OPERATIONS Number of interments by the City 404 Number of Chinese 17 Number of blacks 10 Number of disinterments 2 INTERMENTS BY SOCIETIES Chinese Companies 521 Christianized Chinese 3 Beth Olam 8 A.P. 3. With all the talk about tombstones, I recalled reading something a long time ago. While looking for the reference, I came across some other info that may be of interest to fellow researchers and I include it here. A book I have entitled San Francisco Almanac by Gladys Hansen (then a San Francisco archivist), published in 1975, and later republished in 1995 by Chronicle Books has a wealth of information on San Francisco history. Unfortunately, it is out of print again and Amazon lists it as ³limited availability.² Anyway, the book lists all the early cemeteries of San Francisco and for some, their present disposition. It also has a few tidbits on the ³tombstones.² Since the book is out-of-print, I will summarize the information perhaps you can check your local library for the actual book or send a request to Chronicle to republish it is a wonderful resource that I have treasured for years. Apparently on the 26 of March 1900 Ordinance No. 25 was passed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors ³prohibiting the Burial of the Dead Within the City and County of San Francisco from and after the First day of August 1901² Then in 1914 a notice to remove all bodies within 14 months was sent out to all persons with cemetery lots in Cavalry, Masonic, Odd Fellow and Laurel Hill by the Board of Health because they were ³a public nuisance and a menace and detriment to the public health and welfare.² According to this book, the tombstones from Laurel Hill were used as a seawall, although it does not say to where or in what year they were removed. The tombstones from Odd Fellow were used as a seawall at Aquatic Park. Another reference I found was from a March 2, 1978 article in the Bay Guardian which parrots some of the same info from the SF Almanac, but it also states that ³the headstones were removed from the cemeteries and used for any number of construction purposes.² It states that the Aquatic Park construction was in 1939 and others stones were used as paving blocks in Buena Vista Park. The names and location of early cemeteries I have listed. Where it indicated present disposition or dates of existence, I have put those in too. If you want more info, you will need to find another source perhaps the 1995 edition lists more info. Anyway, here¹s the list: North Beach (Powell and Lombard) Telegraph Hill (southern slope) Russian Hill (summit) Calvary (Catholic) Cemetery (btw. Geary, Turk, St. Josephs and Masonic) bodies moved to Holy Cross, Colma Chinese Cemetery (rear of Laurel Hill, from Parker Ave. west) Moved to Golden Gate Cemetery Gibbath Olom/Hill of Eternity (Jewish) (btwn. Dolores, Church, 19th & 20th Sts.) 2/26/1861 to 12/31/1888. Golden Gate/Clement Street Cemetery/City Cemetery (Clement and 33rd now Lincoln Park) Book states that many of the bodies are still buried below the golf course now located there. Greek Cemetery (Stanyan and Golden Gate) moved to Golden Gate Cemetery Hebrew Cemetery (2 lots- Broadway & Vallejo and Franklin & Gough) 1850-1860 Laurel Hill (prev. Lone Mountain) (btwn California, Geary, Parker and Presidio) Bodies moved to Cypress Lawn, Colma. Masonic (btwn Turk, Fulton, Parker and Masonic) Nevai Shalome Home/Home of Peace (Jewish) (btwn Dolores, Church, 18th & 19th Sts.) Odd Fellows (btwn Geary, Turk, Parker and Arguello). Bodies moved to Greenlawn Home in Colma. Yerba Buena (btwn Market, Larkin and McAllister) Bodies moved to Golden Gate in 1870. By the way, I recall seeing a Laughing Sal for sale at Busvan¹s on Clement Street years ago so there must have been more than one. Hope this helps some of the curious. Susan Filgate

    1. [CASANFRA] Finally found!!!! Some good and bad news
    2. ADRIENNE STEFANIK
    3. Hello everyone! My computer is down for a week. I am at library to check e mails. I hope I can get my computer back this weekend or next week. I was gone to LDS in look up deeply for Antone and Amelia Silva on Tues to Thurs previously. Let me explain my thoughts state strangely for some months and a year. At first, I forgot about children'mention about SF and SP if I found 1880 already for a while even though it is right one. It made sense to me now when I got all information back clearly at last previously. I don't know how to explain my situation but it is really odd for me. My great grandmother Jennie's sister Maria Silva Davis'death record shows mother Amelia with detach and father Antone Silvia. Jennie's death record shows father Antone Silva only and leave blank for mother. I have had been worked on census for a year and almost gave up at LDS previously! I almost left. I found it one hour later before I left for home. At first, I found 1880 census for Jennie's family last year. I had doubts about it for a year because of names, times and children's records. My cousin's oral interview paper work shows little different but it is really close enough. My sense and thoughts grew stronger. It made sense to me now. It is really clear now that 1880 census which it is the right family definetely. It is really strange enough for me now! Yes, I was very excited for a month but it became very difficult this week for me. It is almost complete but it is half. All children of Jennie and some children of Maria mentioned that they were born in SF. Just one of Jennie's oldest son said San Pedro! Thanks to him for changing my thoughts previously. I live here right now!!!! It is really strange for me. Anyway. I reviewed records carefully and lately at last. I realized that Jennie's original name was Joanna on her oldest son's baptism and delayed birth record. Oral interview paperwork shows Juanita on article(story). Juanita is a Spanish name. There is no way for Jennie's Portuguese parents called her in American and Spanish. Her parents spoke only in Portuguese language. So it made sense to me now. Therefore, Jennie's 1880 census is right family because of a name and a year of birth 1870. It is perfect match with names list Maria and Emilia. Maria's birthdate is July 1869 from census 1900. It is really close to 1868 anyway for 1880. Yes, the family names are little mixed up with Maria and Carolina's ages. I was wondering why there is another sister Carolina?! It was puzzled me for a while. At first, I understood it clearly that Antone was remarried with Rosaria. Then, he adopted Carolina and maybe Emilia. Oral interview shows that Jennie had another sister Emma--same as Emilia(Em) I know long time ago children of Jennie did not use information correctly. I wondered how Jennie's oldest son knew about San Pedro. I understood about the picture in my head clearly now. It made sense that he lived with Jennie for long time from 1900 to 1915 sometime when all boys(oldest son's 5 brothers) were in orphange. They did not pick up information enough or correctly. Only oldest son's two sisters lived with Jennie because she could take care of them at that time. A young sister went to school in San Luis Obispo. Oldest sister stayed with her like her oldest brother for their mama's support. Oldest sister died in 1923 by murder. Yes, it is sad story. I want to discuss first about my thoughts for census 1880 and share my story into new chapter below!. It is so amazing here. I have no idea about what happened to Carolina. Her descendants might be living today. I understand that Emilia(Emma)died young through oral interview. My cousin interviewed in 1972 and saved records for me years later. I started in around 1999. Her information is really close accurante about 95%. Some of it is vague and errors. It does not show list Carolina. I assume that children or Jennie forgot to mention Carolina. I have no idea. Let me show you first for 1880 census below relate my story above. Wilmington. Daughter F S W 10 CA Port Port Emilia(Emma) Sylva Daughter F S W 4 CA Port Port I was pretended to sit as census taker and interviewed with them for 1880 census. It made sense to me now. It is nothing do with my residence! I just happened to live here! LOL. I grew up in Palos Verdes area. I assume that Jennie influenced children for making living in Los Angeles but I am not sure how. I will ask my mom about how my grandpa made decision for living in Los Angeles. He was born in Los Alamos,SB. Maria lived in San Mateo from 1885 to 1920. I pretended to say Silva as Sylva. I felt same as long Jennie was a daughter of same father Antone Silva. I felt same! It made sense to me. I felt peace about it. No children knew about where Jennie lived in San Pedro before. I assume that long time ago they might be misunderstood about San Pedro and San Francisco. I cannot say yet for sure about Jennie's birthplace. I believe she was born in San Pedro because of census 1870! I found it finally and previously!!!! Whew!!!! I cannot find 1900, 1910 and 1920. It made me sad and frustration! Antone and Amelia(Rosaria?) have been missing again. I don't know where Jennie's parents are. I assume that they moved back to SF early 1885's or 1900's because of arrange marriages for both daughters. Maria was married in 1885 in San Mateo. Jennie was married early 1890 in SF? Let me show you another one for census 1870 and see what you think!!! aaaaahhhhhh!!! Wow! Jennie travelled a lot through the years and settled at last in El Segundo and Whittier in 1933. She was so busy woman! Now, I am thinking about where her parents are!!! I will check on cemeteries in same location if possible. I have not find it yet but I am still looking for it. I don't know if they moved back from SF and died here. Wait and see. I think it is very difficult. Your encouragement is helped me! Let start with 1870 census below: page no. 18 Wilmington Township, Los Angeles August 19, 1870 Postal Office: Wilmington(Oh,postal office.. Where is it?! I will check on that area, too and take look around! LOL). Sylva Antonio 27 M W Mainer(spelling?) 200(money) Port 1 1(I don't know it is) Sylva Emily!!!!!! 23 F W At home Port 1 1(something do with birth) (same pronication Amelia!!!!) Sylva Mary! 2 M W CA Sylva Joanna! 1/12 F W CA May (birth month!) She was 1 month old at that time! But she was supposed to be 3 months old at that time. I assume that Jennie's parents did not follow calendar correctly. Ha. I thought Jennie was a daughter of Rosaria. She supposed to be a daughter of Emily instead of Rosaria???!!! Yeah, I am still looking for baptism records. I did look up films for San Gabriel Mission and Our Lady Church of Los Angeles something at LDS lately but no luck yet. I am waiting for reply from Catholic Church of Wilmington. Wilmington Church started in 1860. Hope it is listed. Jennie was born on March, 1870. Census and death record show March. She was supposed to be 3 months old at that time for 1870 census???? --- May to Aug.... Is a Mainer same as fisherman? I am making sure about it. Do you think that Mary and Jennie were born in SF and moved to San Pedro quickly? Mother was pregnant at that time when she travelled. Is that possible? Mother Emily died quickly?? Then, Antone was remarried???? What do you think!? Both census are right family. Thanks for your time to read my story and thoughts. It is so funny. I am so relief. But I am still sad about not able to find census 1900. 1900 census is really important part because I need a month, day and year for tracing back to Azores Islands. Any idea???? I am typing in library for almost 3 hours! Enjoy this. Take it home with you to read my story again for bedtime. LOL. Have a Wonderful weekend. I will keep my eyes open for new e mails this weekend or next week. Thanks in advance. 3. Doug , this is an excellent book on the subject of the removals of the SF Cemeteries to Colma....... Svanevik, Michael and Shirley Burgett, City of Souls: San Francisco's Necropolis at Colma, San Francisco: 1995. 3. After hanging on to this 90 lb.chunk of marble for so long, while living in small apartments at one time and getting 'you're-weird' looks, it's nice to give this tombstone a bit of life. One small caveat. While I'm sure George is correct in establishing the name as "Burnett" I must again say that the name on the tombstone is "Bur**ett. This is an 8-letter name not 7. I know spelling errors have occurred on tombstones, but the gouged area definitely accommodates 2 letters not just 1. Also the first name is (Ch)arles. So I guess the legal name must have been Charles Cleveland Burnett. I've responded directly to some, but anyone who would like to send me something on this child or family, please feel free to do so. It would be great fun and gives this little boy a bit of belated respect. And he should indeed be formally listed as a deceased son of San Francisco! One responder indicated that the tombstones were used as rip-rap and water breaks, another as paving stones in golden gate park. It's my understanding that many of the cleared cemeteries became the parks that dot some of the hills of San Francisco. Perhaps the Parks & Recreation Dept of San Francisco knows the exact history, or there's book or site somewhere that talks about it.
