If someone can check the San Francisco newspaper index, I would really appreciate a look for Alfred Elmer JOHNSON. The year would have been about 1906 if it goes back that far. He was about 12 years old when he lost his leg in a street car accident. He was with his father George at the time, as I understand. Something like this may have made the papers or may have been lost to the earthquake. Thank you for your time and help. Diana in Oregon smithdl@wans.net
S Give us a name, and someone can check the San Francisco Newspaper index, for the name might be listed. Dear Senator Fitzgerald: As you know, Senate Bill 2039 for approval to expand O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, will also approve the destruction of two historic cemeteries known as St. John' Church Cemetery and the Methodist cemetery known as Rest Haven. I applaud your efforts to help save these places of eternal rest from the horrendous task of relocation that will disrupt that rest. I am a resident of California. My family came here in 1850 with the Gold Rush. They came here from Illinois. California also seems to believe that eternal rest is not truly eternal for, in the past several years, many cemeteries have been destroyed or adversely impacted by projects of modern devise. Much of the nation, as a whole, seems to be experiencing the same dilemma, as is apparent by emails and postings to the internet. In 1961, the California Appellate Court ruled against the Superior Court, the California Dept. of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration in their efforts to approve the eminent domain taking of a portion of Eden Memorial Park Cemetery for the construction of the Santa Monica freeway in Los Angeles County. The Court ruled that a highway served no better public purpose than a cemetery. I would opine the same should apply to the expansion of the airport. On September 11th, 2001, the families of over 2,800 people lost loved ones in the worst attack the nation has ever known. Those families, Senator Fitzgerald, will never have a grave to visit to help them through their loss. In years to come, those families cannot take the next generation of their family to visit grandparents those children will never know. September 11th stole more than just their lives. It stole the tangible evidence of their very existence. That, Senator Fitzgerald, is what cemeteries are all about. Cemeteries are not just for the dead. They are for the living; so that we may always have a place to visit, to "talk" with our deceased loved ones, to share our happiness and our sorrows, and to continue the memories of those who have been lost to us. Senate Bill 2039, will not only cause the destruction of St. John's and Rest Haven, but will cause untold emotional anguish for the many living descendants of those persons now buried there. I would encourage you to continue your discourse regarding the adversity this expansion plan will thrust upon the dead and the living. This nation cannot continue to thrust aside the last homes of our nation's pioneering citizenry as if their value is less in death than it was in life. Hi all; It has been a while since we had an update and I want all of you to know what is going on with the site. First of all, we have a new webmaster, Aaron Everett, who has been working on fixing all the tables on the site for Netscape users not to have the overlapping lines and columns. This is taking some time due to the size of the files and the amount of information. Aaron has also been talking about giving the site a whole new look, but we have to give him some time. So you can figure out where Aaron fits into the picture, he is the Son-in-law of Steve and Laura Melton and is a computer specialist in Redmond, Washington. He comes with really good recommendations so we will have to see what he does on the site. When he has all the files fixed, the following will be what is currently scheduled to be online (after all the files are reformatted). There will be all or part of the following counties: Amador Butte Colusa Del Norte Fresno Humboldt Kern Lake Los Angeles Madera Marin Mariposa Modoc Monterey Nevada Placer Riverside San Benito San Bernardino San Diego San Francisco San Luis Obispo Santa Barbara Shasta Sutter Tehama When you visit the website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905 you will note that there are other counties currently in trancription. More records for the above counties are also still in transcription. Furthermore, we have discovered that there just might be some El Dorado records out there that did not get burned in the fire. We are currently working toward accessing those and will keep you posted. Donations for the project and funding for the outstanding counties is still deperately needed. Whatever you can do to help cam be sent to me and will be greatly appreciated. PLEASE, be patient with the improvements on the files online. We are working as fast as we can and will keep you posted on how we care coming. Thanks for your patience, understanding and support. Donna Bradley Project Coordinator Pre-1905 Project P. O. I need to request a look up for the 1910 and 1920 census for the surnames Coey or Kraker or Hubbard in SF city Possible first names will be Annie Charles William. As these are rather unusual surname I'm sure there will not be many posted Thank you, Heather heatherhunter@blueyonder.co.uk
I learned last week that the interviews that H.H. Bancroft, that he had done of the Californion's, and that are in the Bancroft Library collection, will be on the web. The Bancroft Library, is starting, I repeat THEY ARE JUST STARTING TO WORK ON THIS. They are planning to digitalize the copies of the interviews that they have so that they then can put them on their web site. I believe this will included the 5 volumes of the History of California, that General Vallejo, wrote and then gave to H.H. Bancroft, with the understanding that they would be published, and they were not. For most if not all, none of these have been published in full. They were used in bit and pieces in the different books that Bancroft published. So when this happens, it will great to read their side of the story, for I heard what General Vallejo, sister felt about the way the man who were in the "Bear Flag Revolt" behaved, to her and other people. She did not think very highly of them, actually she felt they were not much better than savages. So I it keep you up to date on this project. When I asked about the printers, I also asked what they will not do request for people of state for obits. The reasons, for it are as followings: 1) They have only one person who is doing this job. 2) There were and are so many request that they just could not keep up. 3) When they were charging for the service, they were spending more time to keep track of the money, if it had come in, if not asking for it to be sent. Than it was worth. So they decided to limit it to only people in California. George __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Just to give you a up date on the Microfilm readers/printers at the San Francisco Library. I was told by someone who works in the Newspaper room that the new printers are to be in place by the end of May. Two things, 1) this second hand information, but I believe what the person told me. 2) But this is the San Francisco library, and they can be off on their time lines some of the time. Will keep you up to date on what is happening. George __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Games - play chess, backgammon, pool and more http://games.yahoo.com/
Judy This from the San Francisco City Directories: 1938: Spear, Harry, wife Elizabeth and Roy D., were all living at 1196 Broadway. 1939: Roy is not listed, but Harry and Elizabeth are. 1940: Harry and Elizabeth are still there, with Roy D. with wife Frances, at 1534 38th Ave. It is a nice area, will try to check Monday and see what is there now. Eugene This what I found in the 1880-81 San Francisco City Directory; Cosmopolitan Millinery Store, owned by P. Mish and Son, 816 Market. P. Mish and Son, were Phenes and Barrow Mish, which were also at 539 Market, as Importers of Millinery and straw goods. Barrow Mish, lived at 328 Eddy Phenes Mish, lived at 421 Ellis Mrs. Sarah Mish, also lived at 421 Ellis, and had her own Millinery Store, at 133 Kearny. (wife of Phenes and mother of Barrow?) last that year a Solomon G. Mish, bookkeeper, for P. Mish and Son, living at 606 Kearny. In the 1881-82 on Cosmoplitan Millinery and P. Mish and son are not listed, but this is what was; Barrow Mish, manager Mrs Sarah Mish Millinery, 708 Market, living at 421 Ellis Phenis Mish, merchant, living at 421 Ellis Mrs. Sarah Mish, Millinery 133 Kearny and 708 Market, living at 421 Ellis Solomon G Mish, Bookkeeper, for Levy, Diamant and Co., living at 606 Geary. Levy, Diamant and Co., were importers and manufactures of boots and shoes, salesroom 107 Battery, Factory at Drumm and Washington. Hope this helps --- Eugene Beckett <mvfr@midwest.net> wrote: > Thanks George for looking up the Cosmoplatin > Millinery 1880-81. Reasons for frequent moves: 1. Inability to pay rent or board. There was no job security then. 2. Change in family status (some places only allowed single males or females) 3. Change in ownership or management of the rental 4. Change in configuration of the building 5. Change in job - difficulty in getting to workplace 6. Improper behavior - this was completely arbitrary 7. Change in rates for services rendered 8. Discovery by tax collector/other authorities that building was being used for illegal purposes or against municipal codes. 9. Improvement in financial status - ability to afford better accomodations 10. Illness or infirmity --- SU BUCHIGNANI --- sujac@pipeline.com

Thanks George for looking up the Cosmoplatin Millinery 1880-81. Did it list an address for this Millinery? I appreciate your help. Thanks Eugene Beckett
Hello Pam and everyone , I am new to this list . My name is Carol and I live in Wales UK . I have been researching one member of my family in San Francisco . His name was THOMAS ENGLAND and he was an Architect . He was born in Cork , Ireland in 1823 and left for Philadelphia about 1849 , where he stayed till March 1852 , when he sailed on the ASA PACKER to California . He worked and lived in San Francisco from 1852-1869 when he died prematurely of consumption (His Obituary is posted on Pams SF genealogy Obits page) . Besides all of his letters that he sent home to Ireland , I also have an unidentified photograph which I am hoping is Thomas England . I know from his letters that he sent photos home . The photograph has no photographers name on it , only a picture on the back and I am hoping that some of you may have a photo with a similar backing that was taken in SF . I would dearly love this photo to be him , as I feel I know him from his letters . Thankyou Best Wishes Carol Jones (Wales)
Thanks to Edwin A Black,Sr for all the work in transcribing the 1870 San Francisco census, an awesome project to take on and an excellent job done-- Thanks again Bob Specht
