Karen I checked the 1890 San Francisco Cit Directory, for his job title was wondering what he did, and found out that he was Drayman, or some one who drove a wagon. Also the company at that time was at Pine and Davis. Karen... I realize that this is a long shot but there may be a connection here. When I was in high school, there was a drive-in restaurant located at the corner of Columbus & Bay in North Beach just across from the present day Tower Records. The name of the establishment was none other than Otts. Also, there are two pages devoted to William J. Otts in the History of San Francisco (Vol. III) published by the S.J. Clarke Co. in 1931. Good luck in your research... Karen, St. Patrick's burnt down to a shell in the fire after the 1906 Earthquake. According to the priest at the Diocese Archives in Menlo Park none of the records survived. This was the parish of two sets of my g-grandparents. St. Joseph's (now closed) is located on 10th Street and I don't know what happened to their records in 1906. Ken Davis Belmont, CA

Source: THE MANSFIELD HERALD (Mansfield, Richland Co., Ohio): 23 January 1890, Vol. 40, No. 10 SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. Jan. 17 -- Lucius D. STONE, son of the dead pioneer millionaire, has petitioned to be declared insolvent. His liabilities amount to $204,000 while his assets are practically nothing as his real estate valued at $108,000 is mortgaged for $135,000. Stone succeeded three years ago by the death of his father, to a fine hardware business, but bad management forced him to retire more than a year ago. He plunged into country real estate speculation and soon sank all his money. He owes the London and San Francisco bank $24,000, while a claim of $14,000 by Donahue, Kelly & Co. is unsecured. Stone cut a big social figure and indulged in many extravagances. He gave the Bohemian club last Christmas Sanford's painting of the Spanish ballet dancer, for which he agreed to pay $900, but the picture dealer is among is creditors.

Here are a couple of online sites re: Baker and Hamilton-- The online San Francisco Directory for 1878: http://www.zpub.com/sf50/sf/hgtel.htm Baker & Hamilton, Hdwe, 7-19 Front n 1918, Pacific Hardware & Steel merged with Baker & Hamilton (a firm that had been selling innovative agricultural tools since the Gold Rush) to create a company known as Baker, Hamilton & Pacific. This company, whose name later reverted to Baker & Hamilton, occupied the building into the early 1980's.http://www.bhsquare.com/bhp/bh/history.htm Have fun with your search- Carolyn Karen Conley wrote: > Hi List: > I am looking for any information at all on a Nicholas Ott and wife, > Anna, maiden surname unknown. Hi List: I am looking for any information at all on a Nicholas Ott and wife, Anna, maiden surname unknown. This couple adopted my grandmother, probably around 1889 or 1890, after the death of her natural parents. I have Nichlas Ott in the San Francisco City Directory for the years 1889-91. His occupation was listed as a dreyer and his place of employment was Baker & Hamilton. Does anyone know anything at all about this company? Any information at all will be most appreciated. I would really like to learn more about my grandmother. I am hopefull that some day I may be able to locate her adoption records. I have been told that her maiden name was Ward before she was adopted by the Otts and that she had a young brother named Harry who committed suicide near to Calvery Cemetery not long after his parents death. Hi Perhaps the Calif Historical resources will give you info. Here in Va, I research historical structures and archeaological sites found posted on USGS 7.5 topographic quadrangle maps. All surveyed historic structures and archeaological are marked on the maps and numbered according to counties and cities on the topo maps. These sites are linked to recorded info describing the sites. I work as a professional environmental analyst and I have found much info there regarding architects, etc. Another also good resources are Sanborn Fire Insurance maps at the state Library.
