Dear CASANFRA and NORCAL listers, In August my husband and I will be in California and want to take photos of the houses his grandparents and mother lived in. We moved away from San Jose in 1986, but I never really knew the East Bay very well anyway. If someone is familiar with the following areas, would you please tell me if it is safe to go there. Any neighborhood that has been around since the 1920s has the possibility that it's not a very good neighborhood anymore, and we don't want to get mugged or robbed. They're probably fine, but.... 2704 Derby Street, Berkeley 1911 Hopkins Street, Berkeley 1241 Grove Street, Berkeley 110 Arbor Drive, Piedmont Thanks so much! Hi Listers , Is it possible to get a copy of a Will from SF , from 1869 ? If so , where would I apply ? Best Wishes Carol Jones (Wales UK)
I would be appreciative if someone could do a death certificate transcription for me for: Margaret McCabe, b. 20 Feb 1886 or 1888, d. 27 Oct 1950 in San Francisco. She is buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery per what I can find online and was a Nurse in the Army Nurse Corps. I believe she was the daughter of Jane (McGinty) and Patrick McCabe. I am hoping to find informant information and confirm that Jane and Patrick are her parents. Thank you. Kathy (McGinty) Stoneberg http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kstoneberg/ourfamily.htm

Hank When by Mission Dolores, today, they have a listed of the people who are buried in the cemetery, in the cemetery, but not in the office. Did not have time then to copy it, but will try Thursday. Hello everyone, Here is the shortcut to the Senate Bill 1614. http://info.sen.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=sb_1614&sess=CUR&house > =B&site=sen I have briefly reviewed the bill, as amended, and the analyses, and I believe that it is important to raise your object to your state representatives in the Senate and the Assembly NOW. If you don't know who they are, for the Assembly go to http://www.assembly.ca.gov/acs/acsframeset9text.htm and look it up. The full Assembly member directory is at http://www.assembly.ca.gov/acs/acsframeset7text.htm. The Senate directory is at http://www.sen.ca.gov/~newsen/senators/senators.htp. The committee that will hear this on May 23, is comprised of the following: Senate Appropriations Committee meets every Monday at 9:30 am in Room 4203. JURISDICTION: Bills that are subject to Joint Rule 10.5 and are not referred to the Budget and Fiscal Review Committee. Bills that constitute a state-mandated local program. Members: Senator Dede Alpert (Chair) Senator Jim Battin (Vice Chair) Senator Debra Bowen Senator John Burton Senator Martha Escutia Senator Maurice Johannessen Senator Ross Johnson Senator Betty Karnette Senator Bruce McPherson Senator Kevin Murray Senator Don Perata Senator Charles Poochigian Senator Jackie Speier Addresses & Staff: Staff Director: Karen French Deputy Director: Anne Maitland Consultants: Maureen Brooks, George Cate, Bob Franzoia, Miriam Barcellona Ingeni to, Nora Lynn, and Lisa Matocq Assistant: Sally Ann Romo Phone: (916) 445-3284, Room 2206 This Bill must be STOPPED. While I understand the concern about stolen identities, the loss of information will devastate the genealogical momemtum that has been generated since the Internet became such a valuable tool. In my work, it will prevent us from tracking family members that may be buried in unmarked graves in our historic cemeteries that are still being used without maps or records, placing those graves at risk of obliteration. Send an Email to the Chair of this committee at senator.alpert@sen.ca.gov, under Subject: SB 1614 OPPOSE, addressed as: Honorable Dede Alpert, Chair Senate Appropriations Committee Tell the chair that you oppose SB 1614 because it hurts the majority of the people because of the actions of a few criminals. Explain the value of this information to the millions of genealogists worldwide who are attempting to reconnect with their ancestors of the past. Word your opposition firmly, but politely. Copy of your email to Senator Jackie Speier at senator.speier@sen.ca.gov, and copy both your state senator and assemblyman. If you value the access you've had to birth and death records in California (despite the delays you might have experienced), picture your life knowing you will have to physically go to Sacramento or the recorders office of the county where the record is on file. Senator Speier's bill is a knee jerk reaction to Sept. 11th and allows the actions of a few criminals to take away our freedom to access this information. First let me apologize for the long first post. I am searching for Jane and Patrick McCabe. Jane's maiden name was McGinty and she was born in 1847 in Dubuque County, Whitewater Twp., Iowa to John and Sarah McGinty. Patrick was born in Ireland in 1846 to Patrick and Catherine Fitzpatrick McCabe. The McCabe family immigrated in 1848 from Cavan, IRE. A three generation descendancy chart is listed below. I have traced Jane and Patrick to Jefferson County, Vasquez Precinct, Colorado in 1880. A descendant of Bernard McCabe has his family bible that Jane McCabe died 14 Mar 1919 in San Diego. Jane and Patrick had two children in the 1880 Census, Sarah b. c. 1872 and Kate b. c. 1878. The California Death index also shows a Margaret McCabe, mother maiden name McGinty, father McCabe, b. 20 Feb 1886 in Colorado, died 27 Oct 1950 in San Francisco. Hi List, Is there an index of burials at Mission Dolores cemetery covering the late 1850's? One version of my family's story is that John CARMODY and his wife Mary MADIGAN came to San Francisco from New Hampshire by ship in the 1850's. Their youngest son died of measles on the boat and was buried at Mission Dolores. An index might help pin down their arrival date. John CARMODY was in New Hampshire in 1856. He hasn't yet been found on an 1860 census. He missed the 1870 census when he died in May 1870 in Oakland, about five weeks before Oakland started to issue death certificates. There was no obit for the Oakland Library to find. I have arranged to have a cactus placed on his grave this Memorial Day. Any suggestions appreciated. Hank Knowlton

Hi Ruth, In August of 1855, a gentleman wrote the editor of the Sacramento Daily Union newspaper that the Mormon Island Cemetery (east of Folsom in Sacramento County) was being sluiced away by the "Sidney Covies & c." I always thought that was the name of a mining company. But in reviewing the history of Sidney-Town on the Barbary Coast, I'm more inclined to believe it was just a group of Australian miners who were hard at work desecrating the first cemetery of that town. In March of 1856, the Granite Journal (later the Folsom Telegraph) published a note advising people who had loved ones or friends in the Mormon Island Cemetery to make arrangements to remove their remains from the cemetery as it was about to be mined away. In 1854, the Legislature made it a felony to disturb a grave yard and the penalty was from one to ten years in prison. By 1857, the Legislature was receiving requests for approval to relocate cemeteries, among them the Bidwells Bar Cemetery (1857) and in 1858, it approved the relocation of the Cold Springs Cemetery in El Dorado County. I have always believed these actions became necessary as a result of what occurred at Mormon Island. I've not been able to prove this, though, as there is not much in the way of Legislative digests for that time period. Thanks for posting this. Sure shed some light for me!
