    2. Alan & Cindy Frankenberry
    3. Hi list, Around 1890-1895, there was an attorney by the name of Charles A Sumner, 326 Montgomery Street, San Francisco CA. Would there be a possibility that this law office would still be in existence today? I know, the name and address would probably be different, but would the office still be around? (Passed down through the years) If so, what are the chances that any files from the 1890's would still exist? Would the earthquake have destroyed any records? Thanx a bunch for your help, Cindy

    2. David, I saw the reference to Mark Leavenworth being San Jose's mayor and thought I'd contribute the info I had. He is the only Leavenworth listed in the book, and as you can see he only had two brief paragraphs. It is taken from Clyde Arbuckle's 'History of San Jose'. On page 38: "Other projects followed in quick succession, matching the townspeople's increasing civic pride. Quinby's momentum had continued into the administration of Mark Leavenworth, who took over as mayor on April 20, 1868. Leavenworth did not inherit the stupefying handicap of perennial debt that had plagued his predecessors in office. If anything, he had a comparatively easy time. Yet, he served only one term, and turned the office over to Adolph Pfister on April 18, 1870." I'm also posting to NORCAL and the Santa Clara mailing list for the archives. 2. George Rushton
    3. David First he can not be in two places, for Mt. View and the Oakland Crematorium, are two different places. They with the California Crematorium, were all with about two blocks, at one time. The California Crematorium, was owned by the people who had the Chapel of Memories, in Oakland, which is now owned by the company that owns the Chapel of the Chimes, which had the Oakland Crematorium. While Mt. View has there own Crematorium. Now as to getting some information on him, he could be listed in the (CA)lifornia (I)nformation (F)ile, also that might be something in is Obit, on his run for Mayor. Hope this gives you some more help. George > > He died, possibly of TB, on 25 Feb 1914 in Redwood > City, San Mateo County, > California. He was cremated in Oakland, Alameda > County, California. 3. Hi George, I have tracked down my John Henry Church to a divorce from Laura S. Church in the 1880's in Oakland. Laura died in 1884. I am interested in tracing their children Arthur and Thomas and their descendants .-The last I have on Thomas is the 1900 census when he was living with his father on Jessie Street in San FRancisco and was a hotel clerk. Could you or anyone advise me- on how to follow up on finding Thomas and Arthur and their descendents. 3. In the spirit of Memorial Day, I thought I would post these links to the history of the 30th Photo Recon who served in France, Belgium and Germany in WW II. Many of these men were from Northern California. My Uncle, Sgt. Albert Sperisen was a member of the group, and was responsible for the production of the report shown in the second link. Uncle Albert Sperisen lived his entire life, except for his military duty, in San Francisco, and died in May of 1999, nearly 91 years old. He was my mother's twin brother. (My mother died two months later in July of 1999, two weeks short of her 91st birthday.) To find the lists of men, click on "Reports" in the drop down menu. Some are still in progress. (Some may not load well in Netscape.) Good links to other WW II and Military History sites. http://w3.one.net/~cabalcom/30thPRS/30thprs-home.html Link to the report my Uncle worked on. Scroll to the end to get links to photos. There are also links in the text to photos of some of the personnel. http://home.earthlink.net/~donbarnum/ Check it out. "rwalker"

    3. What is your source of the information??? Our information says Redwood City, and that is where the family was living at the time. 1. [CASANFRA] Joseph F. Schottler (1846-1914)
    2. David E. Cann
    3. I am a new subscriber, and as my first posting, I would like to see if anyone out there can help me with one of my "family mysteries." One of the mysteries is why we can find so little information on him, because we are told (unsubstantiated) that he ran for Mayor of San Francisco at one point, and nearly won the election. If that is true, and I don't know that it is, then why is it so hard to find any records on him? I suppose the '06 earthquake could be one reason, but even considering that, it seems very strange. Here is what I have been able to find on him: Joseph Francis Schottler was born in 1846 in Baltimore, Maryland. Also have a conflicting year of birth as 1847, but no date. He was a Butcher between 1870 and 1875 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He was a Realtor between 1876 and 1888 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He was a Clerk between 1877 and 1878 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He was a Poultry Salesman between 1878 and 1879 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He appeared on the census in 1880 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He is shown in the Census as residing in the 2nd Ward. He was a Real Estate Agent in 1880 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He was a Coal dealer in 1891 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He was a Realtor in 1893 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He was a Realtor in 1905 in San Rafael, Marin County, California. Although involved in other professions from time to time, he primarily worked in real estate much of the time, always returning to it after trying other things. He died, possibly of TB, on 25 Feb 1914 in Redwood City, San Mateo County, California. He was cremated in Oakland, Alameda County, California. He was cremated, but his ashes were never claimed by the family. At last report, they were still stored in the "urn room" at Mountain View Cemetery and Oakland Crematorium. This ads further mystery to this couple, as his wife Frances' life is also full of mystery, and it is almost as if she disappeared without a trace. He was married to Frances Matilda Roberts (daughter of Harrison Roberts and Lavinia Leavenworth) on 21 May 1871 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. Frances Matilda Roberts was born on 1 Dec 1850 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana. She was living after Feb 1851 in Massachusetts Flats, El Dorado County, California. She died on 11 Apr 1879 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. She was also known as Frankie. Joseph Francis Schottler and Frances Matilda Roberts had the following children: +2 i. Francis Harrison Schottler (born on 1 Feb 1872). Joseph Francis Schottler had the following children: 3 i. Schottler. +4 ii. Alfred Schottler (born in 1883). Frances, his first wife, was simply found dead in 1879 under unknown circumstances, and we can find nothing anywhere to indicate any reason. No cause of death, nothing whatever, other than further mystery. Joseph fathered two more children in the next very few years, but we do not know the mother's name, or whether or not he even remarried. All we do know is that the family apparently "disowned" him for unknown reasons, lending more mystery to his story, and that would appear to explain why, when he was cremated in 1914, his ashes went unclaimed by the family and to this day remain in a vault in Oakland. I am sure the 1906 earthquake has something to do with the lack of information on him, but surely there must be something somewhere to lend some clues to all of the mystery surrounding him. If anyone out there has any information on him, either of his two spouses, or any other information on them other than what is listed above, I would very much like to hear from you. David E. Cann decann@infi.net

    3. Thanks so much to everyone who replied to my questions about safety in the neighborhoods of Berkeley and Piedmont. I was born and raised in California, so it's not a matter of watching too much TV or thinking all Californians are weird or dangerous. I have been in other areas of the country taking pictures of houses my ancestors lived in and sometimes I didn't get out of the car because I didn't feel safe in doing so. Maybe I'm being overcautious, but better to be safe than sorry. Thanks to all your replies I know that we will not need to be afraid to get out of the car this trip. By the way, I've been on many genealogy mailing lists, and the NORCAL AND CASANFRA lists are the two best! I have found more help from y'all (I've lived in the south for awhile now<g>) than anywhere else in the country (special thanks to Dee and Gary). Thanks again!
