Thanks Rebekah, I had seen that entry in the past and was curious about it. There is a mismatch of middle name/initial and age, but then, I know how it goes sometimes with the accuracy of the census records! I think I'll dig into it a little further. Ogden died on July 2nd , 1944 in the V.A. hospital in Palo Alto, Calif and was buried July 5th, 1944 in the Golden gate National Cemetery. I was wondering if you could do a look-up to see if there is an obit for him in the Sacramento newspaper. His death cert indicated his usual address was Route ?2, Box 3200, Sacramento. On the sacramento web site it mentioned that you can transcribe death cert. also. I am wondering if this means you have access to death certs. Lyle's mother , Agatha Low Ogden died in 1933 in Sacramento and is buried in the Elder Creek Cemetery, Florin. In response to a few recent queries related to 19th century San Francisco records--or lack of them-- I would like to remind researchers of a brand new, comprehensive book that focuses on finding alternative sources for the city of San Francisco (or any other locality that presents problems because of "burned records"). Raking the Ashes,Genealogical Strategies for Pre-1906 San Francisco Research by Nancy Simons Peterson Please go to the Homepage of the California Genealogical Society and Library (www.calgensoc.org) for complete info, glowing reviews and ordering information. (For less than the cost of a single hour of paid research, you can have access to many research ideas. Or visit the CGS library for a day and browse a copy while there!) My apologies to those of you who are already aware of this book. Lorna Wallace CGS member
Ken, One thought as to Orphanage, would be St. Vincent's in San Rafael, Marin County. You might check the 1900 & 1910 Census for Marin to see if he is enumerated among the orphans. "rwalker"
Hi, I'll be visiting The City for the next week beginning on Monday. I've done research on my line before, focusing primarily on the city library---mostly the city directories and some miscellaneous documents available at the SF History Center. I've also spent quite a few hours researching at the Sutro Library. What I'm looking for are some new sources to look at. Both my father and grandfather were born in the city. Here is an extract of my family that's relevant to San Francisco: John WATERS, b. 1870-1880?, Scotland, d. Unknown + Irene BERKLEY, b. 1869, Washington DC, d. Unknown ...Joseph John WATERS, b. 23 Oct 1898, San Francisco; d. 28 Mar 1965, Portland OR. ...Thomas I. WATERS, b. abt 1900, San Francisco; d. Unknown (possibly in OR) ...+Caroline Margaret SYLVIA, b. 11 Nov 1891, Hawkinsville, Siskiyou, CA, d. 8 Aug 1963, Portland OR ......Richard Joseph WATERS, b. 22 Dec 1919, San Francisco; d. 8 Nov 1979, Petaluma CA. The problem I have is a common one for those with San Francisco roots, namely that many records that are needed were destroyed in the 1906 fire. My grandfather, Joseph WATERS, was supposedly sent to an orphanage somewhere as a young child, according to living relatives. I do not know what happened to his parents...I've searched carefully through the mortuary records at the SFPL for them. The family was Catholic so that is one angle I'd be interested in pursuing. I have reason to believe that Joseph's parents (John Waters/Irene Berkley) may have never been married. I base this on the fact that Irene is shown with her maiden name in entries in the city directories and census dated after Joseph's birth. I know this is not proof of that but it does seem to indicate it. I've also carefully searched the SF newspapers (microfilm at SFPL) looking for birth announcements for Joseph but was unable to find anything for Oct 1898. My sources for his birth are his death certificate and his Social Security application. I've carefully searched both city directories and census for all WATERS lines in the city from 1870-1905, hoping to gain more information (for details see: http://satwatcher.net/genealogy/html/sfdir.html). So, to summarize, I'm wondering if there are more sources out there that I could take advantage of. Any suggestions would be most welcome! Aloha, Ken Waters Honolulu, Hawaii

David What was your grandfather's middle name for there a number of William Brady's? As to birth records, those I hate to say were lost in the Earthquake and Fire of 1906. Might be in a paper, but all it would say a boy born to the first name of the father, last name and to his wife. As to baptismal records maybe but would have know what church they want to or where they had it done. Jake Dyels Jr. -- Foreign Service envoy - Jason B. Johnson, Chronicle Staff Writer Friday, June 16, 2006 Jake Marion Dyels Jr., who in 1957 became one of the first African American firefighters in Contra Costa County and later served as a diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service, died Monday. He was 72. Mr. Dyels, of Brentwood, died at John Muir Hospital in Concord two days after being diagnosed with bile duct cancer. He was surrounded by his children and his wife of 50 years, W. Joanne Ellison Dyels. He served nine years as a Richmond firefighter, then joined the Peace Corps, becoming the agency's regional director in Colombia. After leaving the Corps, he joined the U.S. State Department and was appointed vice-consul at the American consulate in St. John's, Newfoundland. Mr. Dyels was born in Oklahoma and moved to California with his family a year later. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1952 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in international relations from San Francisco State University and a master's in public administration from the University of Oklahoma. He later attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Over a 30-year Foreign Service career, Mr. Dyels held posts in Panama, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands and Mexico. He also served on the State Department Grievance Board and as a senior assessor to the Board of Examiners. He retired from the Foreign Service in 1997. Ralph Hartwell met Mr. Dyels when they were both assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka. He was impressed by Mr. Dyels' commitment to duty and pride at representing his country. "He was very dedicated, a really conscientious man," said Hartwell. "He was a great guy and a very close personal friend." Mr. Dyels' achievements also served as an inspiration to his family, said his daughter, Janice Strong. "My dad came from a very, very poor family," said Strong. "Nobody had ever gone to college. Most of them didn't even get through high school. In our family he's just idolized. "My dad was my best friend. He was the warmest, kindest person," said Strong. Mr. Dyels is survived by his wife, Joanne, daughters Jocelyn Dyels Fuller of Antioch, Karen Ann Dyels of Charlotte, N.C., Janice Dyels Strong of Palo Alto; and son, Kevin Richard Dyels of Silver Spring, Md. He also had nine grandchildren and twin great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind sisters Doris Jean Dyels Ferguson, Sandra D. Newton, Sharon D. Turner, Sheryle L. Griffin, Jean M. Martin and brother James M. Dyels. Funeral services were scheduled for 11:30 a.m. today at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 500 Fairview Ave., Brentwood. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the American Cancer Society in the name of Jake M. Hi Everybody-- I just joined the list primarily in order to get a feel for the questions people ask and to plug (I promise just once) the new book the California Genealogical Society just released, titled "Raking the Ashes: Genealogical Strategies for Pre-1906 San Francisco Research." You can learn more at www.calgensoc.org or ask me offline. Several have struggled with the question on the 1880 mortality schedules. There are many sources. Films of the originals are available on interlibrary loan within California from the state library. They have been filmed by the Family History Library on film #1,549,971, available on loan through local Family History Centers. The Sacramento Genealogical Society extracted the information for the entire state and published it in book format. This publication is available at Sutro Library and the California Genealogical Society Library in Oakland. "Raking the Ashes" is very comprehensive (over 200 pp) and your list moderator, Pam Wolfskill, was one of the reviewers. It's a guide, not a compendium of records; it shows you how to locate what you are looking for. The cost is a little under $20--much less than what you would pay for one hour of professional research. Nancy Peterson ____________________________________________________________________

Hi Ruth, Gosh you guys are so helpful on this list. Even though I have had her obit from the Sf Examiner for about 12 years I never thought that the SF Call would have different info! Someone sent me the obit today and it actually has a tiny clue in it!!! (Thanks George) The SF Examiner didn't say anything about [Boston Copy] which is a HUGE clue back to John working as a piano forter in Boston in 1857-1860 approx. then they must marry because there next two children were born in St. Louis in 1861/1863 and they head to Sf by 1867. The Boston Copy info is a great clue! I do have the other obit but it also doesn't have any thing about the Chenery St. info. They lived along Chenery up until 1911. I have John in a timeline from about 1869-1911 when he dies in SF. All the children grew up and also lived there (Johnson & Dean, Riley). I'm still am going to try to find the "SF Mortality Schedule" but this was totally an unexpected bit of info! Thank you, Cathie
