To all that replied: Thanks for the feedback. I find that saving the records and viewing them (if you have Windows XP like I do) is very convenient (the magnification aspect, wow!). Right now I'm not much studying San Francisco any longer as my research is about done I think. However, now I'm digging around in the deep south (and I mean deep - Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, Louisiana, etc.) and I have found tons of information that I am sure is mine. I'm sharing it with my foster aunt and she is highly intrigued, believe me (I'm intrigued too, but these aren't really my relations or are they?). Anyway, I'm on the expensive trial (about $350 a year plan) for now but finding very little in the world records. It seems that the other half of me goes back very far (beyond record keeping dates) in the USA and it is pretty interesting I'd say. However, my personal criticisms are that there are a lot of mistakes the transcriptions of these old records from way down south (but not everyone has people named Rutilla and Ceithe, Seethe, etc.) I realize. I'm still bugged by that guy that called me up (he was a native of Berkeley, gee what a coincidence). I think the regular version is enough for me but I really don't want to share it with others (especially info. related to my late mother who was adopted in 1925). Thanks to all for the feedback. It is all positive so that is a real plus. As for AOL, I'll hold my comments on that! Hint: *ack!!!!* Oh, btw, I have some interesting news. It seems that the sealed adoption records that were and still are stored in New Orleans for Louisiana are still very much intact and suffered no damage from Katrina (they went in and got those records ASAP luckily). I'm still hoping to find records from that source. As it now stands, I'm waiting for a call back on that one. :) Regards to all, Sue >From: "Helen O'Connor" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [CASANFRA] ancestry.com feedback needed please >Date: Sun, 03 Sep 2006 22:58:43 -0600 > >Sue, >Here's my 2 cents about Ancestry: I live about 35 miles from Salt Lake >City and the Family History Library. I LOVE my subscription to ancestry.com. I appreciate the breadth of materials they have. I find the census transcriptions very accurate, and they give us the option to correct the transcription errors we find. In all my conversations with genealogy friends I've never heard anyone say it was hard to leave ancestry.com...hard to leave AOL, yes!
I found my great-grandparents (1893) on the Western Marriages site. I then wrote to the county recorder and requested what they had. They sent me a photocopy of the register it was entered in. In Latah County it cost me $2. I had sent a check for $15 (I figured that was an average amount that States charge) with the request which they sent back to me with the copy and a note to send $2. The site says it has marriages to 1930. I entered my name and it popped up with my first marriage in 1963. Sue, Here's my 2 cents about Ancestry: I live about 35 miles from Salt Lake City and the Family History Library. (SF Bay Area native and resident for 60 yrs) I thought there was no reason for me to sign up for Ancestry since I could go to the Library any day! Wrong. It's so much easier to do the census work at home. I don't use much of their other offerings as I can never find what I'm looking for. The census sheets on my computer are much easier and clearer than looking at the LDS films that you used to have to look up in an index book, then get the film, load it, find the city/township you are looking for. I do know that the Fam Hist Lib has Ancestry on all their computers in the Library and it is free to search for anyone wanting to use it. They did call me when my renewal was up last month and I signed up again, just for the use of the census. There was no pressure and I could have declined their offer. I've been at genealogy for 30 years, so I've done most my work, but I love finding way-out cousins and of course genealogy is never ending! Go for it. Hi, Sue. I rely heavily on ancestry for both my personal and professional research. I don't pay much attention to the trees posted there by other users (because I can't depend on the information being accurate/documented), but I do use the source materials (censuses, historical newspapers, WWI draft cards, etc., etc.) all day long every working day of my life. I also subscribe to genealogy.com, and it is useless by comparison. As far as I'm concerned, ancestry is worth every penny. Having said that, it's also true that ancestry.com is currently overhauling their organization of data and I am NOT pleased with the changes in their search template. I hope that the change is temporary. I don't post any family tree information at ancestry.com. I maintain all of my own and my clients' records in Family Tree Maker databases on my own computer. I don't want to proliferate any of my unproven guesses. Occasionally I'll privatize one of my own files, generate a descendant report, and post the information at one of the message boards. Thank you Mary, This really means a lot to me. I appreciate it very much. We went to high school together, always knew we were cousins but never how. I found out about two months ago and tried to reach her; but she had died six months earlier. Unfortunately, having lived in Sacramento for over 40 years, we did lose touch, so it would have been nice. Now I am trying to put the finishing touches on this part of the family. Thanks again. There was no Reuters, AP or UPI during this era. It's my understanding that newspapers were widely distributed. This is how news of one section of the country was disseminated to another section. I'm not aware whether or not there was any formal distribution network or method. The "Please Copy" was a standard way of alerting a paper that an item was of local interest. So when the item might be printed depended on several variables: how long it might take for a newspaper to reach Boston, whether it was noticed or not, and whether a Boston paper found it worthy of printing. I have seen Boston papers add more information about the surviving relatives living in Boston, so worth a tryt. Often it just an identical reprint.
I came a interesting fact the other day, so was wondering if anyone knows the names and locations of the four largest suspension bridge in the state of California? No prizes for the correct answers, just for the fun of it.;-) Will let you know the names and where they are on Tuesday, so the people who are away this weekend, can try also. Regarding the link I sent earlier for Western State marriages database. The database has been online for at least a few years and they are adding to it constantly. As Pat said it covers only a small part of CA currently, but it does cover some states that have less available online, such as; Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, etc. (The point of my email was that the continuously updated database is online for FREE, rather than anyone having to pay for the CD.) Donna, I have copied the database description straight from the web site for you... "Virtually all of the pre-1900 marriages are included in the index for Arizona, Idaho and Nevada. Many counties for those same states have been extracted into the 1930's and some, much later. A significant number of marriages from selected counties in California, western Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Utah, eastern Washington, and Wyoming are also included. For more details, see "List of Counties by State". As of September 2, 2006, this file contains over 407,230 marriage records with additional entries being added nearly every working day." Hope that helps explain the database. MeLani --Anyone know where this info is compiled from? Cathie, The telegraph had connected east and west for nearly decades by the time your ggm died in 1880, and newspapers were primary users of the telegraph services. You can read more about this at http://www.nyu.edu/classes/stephens/Collier's%20page.htm . But my question is: If you locate the same item in the Boston paper, what will you know that you didn't already know from her obituary (which I assume was printed in California)? Anyone know where this info is compiled from? It's a new data base for me so I put in about 4 names I know just to see what came up and I didn't get anything. Seems like their data base might be from very limited resources. Gotta say though, California is one of the easiest states to research in that I've found yet....so much available on line! Hello, I know marriage lookups are not usually done on this site but I just saw a CD Data base online and it doesn't work on MACs I'm not sure it this info is any different than what's on Vital search or not. (I don't have the premium membership) The Title is: Marriages (Western) 1850-1951 Arizona, California, Idaho, and Nevada, 1850-1951 Marriage Index Which to me sounds like I should try and see if a few of my problem relatives are on here! Albert Johnson m. Mary Matilda McLaughlin (late 1880-1881) William E. Dean to Annie McLaughlin (1898-1900) Milton Kraft to Olive McLaughlin (1900 approx.) Unfortunately this is all on one family and three of their girls, of who I can't find. I tried all the Catholic Churches and NO has records. It's possible they were married at St. Patrick's were I think all records are gone. Anyway if some has this disk I would love it they could lookup any or all of my names. If I had Dates I could really pin point my searches. Please note: I do have all the Censuses on these people and I have all there children I have also checked on SFCall database. Thanks so much, Cathie
