Lathrop Native Daughter Margaret Louise Lathrop, 77, passed away in Stockton on Sept. 17, 2005 after a long battle with cancer. She was born in French Camp on June 25, 1927. She spent much of her childhood in Lockeford, Lodi and Thornton, where her father worked on the historic Barber Ranch, owned by Mrs. Lathrop?s aunt and uncle, Ed and May Barber. She rode her own Harley in the 1940s and 50s, spending many hours with her first husband, the late Robert ?Red? Spiller, touring the Sierra foothills and camping out. When Mr. Spiller retired from Aerojet in 1964, they purchased a section of land in northern Idaho and raised Hereford cattle and hay. A great lover of history and the world of publishing, Margaret spent more than 40 years in the newspaper business, and one of her greatest joys was publishing her books on the history of Lockeford and Clements. She owned and operated an antiques business in Carmichael before moving to Lodi, then Lockeford, where she once again began a career in publishing. She was interested in politics and local history, an avid reader, master gardener, and lover of music and singing. Leading the singing at the Senior Citizens? lunches in Lockeford was one of her special enjoyments. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Alta Babcock Harrington; and former husband, Robert ?Red? Spiller. Surviving are her loving children, daughter and son-in-law Elmer and Pat Patridge of Grass Valley, son and daughter-in-law Robert and Dee Spiller of Oak Harbor, Wash., son and daughter-in-law Mike and Gina Spiller of Bay St. Louis, Miss.; loving sister, Millie Cheechov of Vacaville; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
