She was born in 1872-73 to Herman N. Garrett and Cornelia J. Bandy. Cornelia was the daughter of Calvin B. Bandy and Violet M. Rucker. Calvin was my great-great grandfather's brother. Herman and Cornelia had another daughter in July or August 1874 but it appears that she and her mother died in childbirth. They named her Cornelia. Meta Belle can be located in the 1880 Census for Santa Barbara County. She was living with an Ernest and Mary Manthi. She was a niece to one of the Manthi's. Meta Belle married Charles Thomas Wilson on 31 December 1891, in Lompoc Santa Barbara County, CA. Charles was listed as being from Missouri, 24 years of age and residing in Arizona. Meta Belle was listed as a native of California, residing in Lompoc and 18 years of age. An interesting note: Meta Belle was married almost 20 years to the day after Cornelia and Herman. I ran across the Herman Nelson Garrett web page that was set up by a descendant, Mark Wray Garrett. This site said that Herman ran a herd of sheep from Sacramento to Midland Texas and was the first to set up residence in the Midland area. Are you related to Mark Wray Garrett? I have been trying to reach him but it appears that his e-mail and snail mail address are no longer current. I have looked in California and Arizona but have not found Meta Belle. I even checked Texas for Meta Belle, thinking that she might have wanted to be near her father. So far no trace of her. I did obtain a death certificate on a Belle Wilson from Santa Barbara county but it is not the correct Belle. This Belle's maiden name was Wilson. Please drop me an e-mail. Perhaps we can trade ideas on how to locate Meta Belle. john r. bandy
