Sacramento Daily Union Monday Morning, November 7, 1853 FIGHT BETWEEN THE U.S. TROOPS AND INDIANS - The Shasta Courier has news through Cram, Rogers & Co.'s Express that a company of U.S. Dragoons had a very severe engagement with a party of Indians on Deer Creek, some 25 miles from Fort Lane. It seems that the Indians on the trail between Jacksonville and Crescent city, have for some weeks past been very troublesome, having killed one man and robbed numerous trains. For the purpose of chastising the depredators and freeing the road from their further annoyance, Capt. SMITH, Commander at Fort Lane, sent out Lieut. RADFORD with a company of 80 dragoons, who met and attacked the Indians on Deer Creek, and after quite a hard fight forced them to scatter into the mountains. The Indians had ten warriors killed, and a greater number wounded. Lieut. RADFORD had a sergeant and one private killed, and three privates wounded. The Indians in their fight abandoned all of their horses, ammunitions, food and indeed nearly all else of their worldly possession. STILL ANOTHER MURDER - It seems as if hell had vomited up its legions to possess the minds of men and make them murderers. Almost every exchange that we open contains the frightful particulars of some bloody affair of the kind. The Yreka Herald says that the bodies of a Spaniard named Manuel, and a Prussian named Joseph NOETZEL, were found murdered on the Humbug trail, on Wednesday, 28th inst. They presented a horrid appearance when found, being in such a decayed condition that they could not be removed. Suspicion rests on two Spaniards who left Humbug Creek immediately after the murder. HOSTILE MEETING - From information received yesterday morning, says the Shasta Courier of Saturday, we have every reason to believe, we regret to say, that a hostile meeting took place this morning, near Weaverville, between Edward ROWE, Esq., of Cram, Rogers & Co.'s Express, and Col. Wm. B. MAY, member elect to the State Senate from the Trinity District. We understand that Mr. Rowe is the challenged party. IMMIGRATION - Says the Sonoma Bulletin, with regard to immigration this season across the plains: "There were between twenty-five and thirty teams, with one family to each on the average, or altogether about one hundred and twenty-five persons, bringing with them not less that three thousand head of American cattle, principally milch cows and work oxen, besides a number of horses and mules, and twelve hundred sheep." MORTALITY OF STOCKTON - During the months of September and October, the number of interments at Stockton was twenty-one. FRIGHTFUL - On Monday last, says the Calaveras Chronicle, two little children belonging to Mrs. CHILDERS, at Murphy's, obtained possession of an opened keg of gunpowder, handsfull of which they kept tossing into the fire, until a train was formed which communicated with the keg, and caused it to explode. The little ones were injured, it is thought, beyond recovery. MURDER - By Coover's line of stages from Jackson, Calaveras county, we learn that a man named Alexander HALL, formerly of Clay county, Missouri, was murdered at two o'clock yesterday morning by a Mexican. We have no particulars, further than that the Mexican made his escape. FATAL AFFRAY - At Pittsburgh, a few days since, says the Shasta Courier, a man by the name FOSTER stabbed another man so severely that he has since died. Foster was examined before Justice NOTTING, and, in the absence of the proper bail, was placed in the hands of Sheriff NUNNALLY, to await his trial at the next term of the District Court. WELSH is the name of the man killed. ANOTHER MURDER - A German was murdered by an Englishman named "Strawberry Bill," in Indian Valley, on the night of the 3d inst. The act, says the Marysville Herald, seemed to have been premeditated. The murderer made his escape. MILL DESTROYED BY FIRE - A saw mill belonging to Mr. John HENRY, containing 150,000 feet of good lumber, was destroyed by fire near Placerville on Friday or Saturday last. WEIGHTS - Cornelius STAGG has been appointed Sealer of Weights and Measures for San Francisco, which will hereafter conduce to prevent short weights complained of by our merchants MISKA HAUSER - The San Francisco Sun says that Miska Hauser, the violinist, has not gone to South America, as asserted by the "up country papers." The information that he had was first derived from a bay paper. JOINED - J.W. COFFROTH, Esq., Senator from Tuolumne county, has joined the Sons of Temperance. Pity other members of the California Legislature do not follow his example. MARRIED At San Jose, on the 2d November, by the Rev. A.M. WINN, Mr. Wm. F. SWASEY of San Francisco, to Miss Hentiena BASCOM, of San Jose. At San Francisco, Nov. 2d., by Rev. S.H. WILLEY, Hon. W.J. SWEASEY, member elect of the Legislature of California, to Mrs. Lucy EAGAR.
