Surnames: Smith, Schmidt Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JW.2ADI/820.2.1.1 Message Board Post: In the 1880 census of Franklin Twp., Sacramento Co., CA (p. 338A), we find John SMITH (æ 35, b. Holland) and wife, "Willemena" (æ 33, b. Holland). Unfortunately, I had stopped there. I have now extracted the rest of their census records (1900-1930) and created a family group sheet for them at my web site: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/S/SchmidtJohn-WilhelminaMohr.shtml In all their remaining censuses, John and William are surnamed SCHMIDT and give their birthplaces as Germany, although daughter, Madeline, is still "Madelane SMITH" in the 1900 census. A great many Germans surnamed SCHMIDT had their surnames Anglicized to SMITH upon arrival in the U.S., just as a great many MILLERs were originally MÜLLER and a great many BROWNs were originally BRAUN. It seems John & Wilhelmina managed to reclaim the original spelling and shed the Anglicized "SMITH" spelling. However, I will continue to show them as SCHMIDT/SMITH on my web site, not because they ever deliberately changed their name to SMITH, but because they may be found as SMITH in some records. As for their birthplace, it's my guess that in 1880 when the census enumerator asked them their origin, they replied either "Deutsch" or "Deutschland," which the enumerator mistakenly took to mean "Dutch" and thus entered their birthplaces as "Holland." This same error is the one that resulted in the "Pennsylvania Deutsch" being called, "Pennsylvania Dutch," despite the fact that they are overwhelmingly German, not Dutch. In the 1920 census, John & Wilhelmina's son, Henry, gives his father's birthplace as Hanover, Germany, and his mother's as Holstein, Germany. A location in Hanover would be consistent with a location in East Frisia, though the Global Gazetteer spells the town, Grosswolde. So, we were both right and both wrong. I was wrong for not looking beyond the 1880 census, and you were wrong for not looking at the 1880 census. Score 1-1. We're both winners because we both now know more than we did. :-) Diana P.S. How were you able to identify the Jan Christoffer SCHMIDT in Grosswolde as the one in California?

I agree with you that Henry STEINMEYER married only once, to Annie SCHMIDT. It was Henry's step-mother, Anna C. ECKMANN/ECKMAN, who married twice, first to Frederick William STEINMEYER, second to William KLAESER. It's not unusual for there to be discrepancies between birth dates in the censuses and on tombstones (or death certificates). The person ordering the tombstone is obviously not the deceased, just as the informant on a death certificate is obviously not the deceased, so both tombstones and death certificates, while usually very accurate as to the death date, are notoriously inaccurate with regard to the birth date. As Henry does appear to be adopted, he may, himself, have been uncertain as to his birthdate. In cases where people don't know their birth date or place, they are usually embarassed to admit it, so when asked, they will give a fictional date, which can lead to inconsistencies in their records through the years.

When Annie died in 1955 she was still Annie Steinmeyer, she never remarried. Annie is in my family, the only marriage record we have is hers to Henry and her death certificate supports that. Nor do we have any record that states Henry was adopted. If you have documentation for these two events we'd love you to share them so our family book would be accurate.

Just a minor correction (probably a typo on the part of the newspaper): Annie's middle initial in other records is "C," not "G." She is Anna C. ECKMANN / ECKMAN, born Jun 1852 in Hanover, Germany, daughter of Mrs. Catharina/Catherine ECKMAN (maiden name and given name of husband unknown). Anna married first in San Francisco, CA, in 1973, to Frederick William STEINMEYER (b. 1828/9, Prussia). They are next seen in the 1880 census of San Francisco, with an *adopted* son, Henry (æ 4, b. CA), and Frederick's brother, Henry John STEINMEYER (æ 40, b. Prussia). In the 1900 census, Frederick & Anna are in Sacramento, CA. Anna's widowed mother is living with them, along with an adult boarder who appears unrelated. There are no children in the household, and Anna gives the status of her child-birthing as 0|0, consistent with having had only one adopted child. By the 1910 census, Frederick is apparently deceased because Anna has remarried. She is still living in Sacramento, now with second husband, William KLAESER (b. 1854/5, Coblenz, Germany). The only child in the house is her adopted and now married son, Henry STEINMEYER (æ 34, b. CA). Oddly enough, Henry is also enumerated as living with his wife, Annie M. (SCHMIDT/SMITH) STEINMEYER. It's rare to be enumerated twice, but it does happen. So, were Henry and Annie estranged? Did Annie say Henry was living with her to save face? In the 1920 census, William & Anna C. (ECKMANN) KLAESER are still in Sacramento, CA, but living with them, now, is their widowed "daughter-in-law," Annie M. (SCHMIDT) STEINMEYER and her two sons, Elmer and Fred. As shown by the obit, Anna died in 1921. In 1930, we find widower William KLAESER living in the Pacific Old People's Home in Los Angeles, CA. So... who are these *four* children of Anna's named in the obituary? We recognize "Harry L." as Henry L., but who are "Julius J., Eckman, and John Behr"? We not only don't find them in the censuses with Anna, I can't find them in the censuses, at all. Or did the newspaper err and are these her brothers or other relationship? Is "Julius J., Eckman" actually, Julius J. ECKMAN? Is "John Behr" actually, John BEHR? Does anyone know? I haven't been able to solve this one, at all. The other mystery is Anna's sisters, Mrs. Katie GLIE and Mrs. Mary M. SILLER, whose maiden names were presumably ECKMANN. I can't find them in any census, either. What I have in the form of documentation is online at my web site in the form of linked family group sheets, which you can hook into from Frederick's page: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/S/SteinmeyerFriederichWilhelm-AnnaCEckmann.shtml I'm not, in fact, blood-kin to this this family, so I've gone rather far afield here, but I do like to solve a mystery. My connection is that Henry & Annie's son, Elmer A. STEINMEYER, married second to Blanche E.M. MATTHIESEN, daughter of Peter Jensen MATHIESEN, brother of my great-grandfather.

Just this correction (that is either the fault of the newspaper or the informant, not you)... Henry Louis STEINMEYER's biological parents are unknown. His 1900 census records shows he was born in Jun 1875 in CA, and his 1880 census record shows him as the adopted son of Frederick William STEINMEYER (b. 1828/9, Prussia) & Anna C. ECKMANN / ECKMAN (b. 1852, Hanover, Germany). Anna married second to William KLAESER, so the "Mrs. Emma KLAESER" named as Henry's mother in the obituary is Anna, not Emma, and she's his step-mother, not his mother. [Anna had no biological children with either husband.] Henry's wife was Annie M. SCHMIDT/SMITH, daughter of John SCHMIDT/SMITH & Wilhelmina MOHR of Holland and Franklin Twp., Sacramento Co., CA. For details and documentation, please see family group sheet at: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/S/SteinmeyerHenryLouis-AnnieMSchmidt.shtml Henry & Annie's son, Elmer A. STEINMEYER, married first to Eleanore CLEMENTZ, daughter of Frank CLEMENTZ, and second to Blanche E.M. MATTHIESEN-SORENSON, daughter of Peter Jensen MATTHIESEN & Avilde E. CHRISTENSEN (Alvilde married second to Capt. Emil SORENSEN, who apparently adopted Blanche because Blanche married as SORENSEN). Peter Jensen MATTHIESEN is my great-grandfather's brother, hence my interest, but as Henry STEINMEYER is not my ancestor and Elmer died without issue, I'm not pursuing this line further. But Henry's son, Fred, did have issue, so Henry's true parentage should be of interest to their descendants. Hopefully, court records of Henry's adoption in Sacramento Co., CA, will name his biological parents.

I can check for DC and obit. Let me know. I receive about 200 emails a day. Without the prior email or copy of the message I have no clue as to what I am supposed to help you with. I hope you understand. Just send the message back with the original information and I will try to help as much as I can.
