    1. [CARUS-WILSON] Notice about Rootsweb Lists
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team If anyone has an interest in finding alternative communication possibilities and/or suggestions for alternatives, please send a note to the list to that effect ASAP. With heavy hearts, Jim and Di

    1. [CARUS-WILSON] Help Keep This List Active
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di

    3. Arthur, I have no record of Carus Wilson, b. Gosport 1859. Try the newly published 1911 Census, or the earlier ones. It could be that one of his female ancestors was a C-W (the printed records tended not to bother too much with the girls!) Or he could have been the victim of Victorian snobbery, which led to the creation of many genealogical legends. If you can get hold of a copy of his birth certificate, it should give his mother's maiden name, which might give you a clue. Good luck, Robin Morgan-Giles. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Arthur French" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2009 12:09 PM Subject: Re: [CARUS-WILSON] Carus-Wilson family > We corresponded some time ago about a Carus WILSON born 1859 in Gosport, > Hants. 3. We corresponded some time ago about a Carus WILSON born 1859 in Gosport, Hants. He was a draper, and married one of my father's half-sisters. We think he must have been named after the famous CARUS-WILSON family, but there seems to be no genealogical connection. 3. Hi Everyone: I am new to this list and I was hoping to find other Carus-Wilson descendants here. I descend through Rev. Robert Kyle and Kathleen Carus-Wilson (of Casteron). Any one else interested in that line? Thanks, Henry Martin Kyle

    2. Hello Arthur. I personally cannot answer your query as I do not know. And as you are the only subscriber to the list a this stage I can confidently say the question will still remain unanswered. 1. [CARUS WILSON] Famous name?
    2. Arthur French
    3. I have subscribed to this list for just a few days to tell a story and ask questions. An aunt of mine, Mary Emma FRENCH (b 1857), married a Carus WILSON in Gosport, Hampshire. Carus seems to have been his given name. His father, John WILSON, a draper, was born in Leicester in 1805, and I know nothing further back. I met some of my WILSON cousins in my childhood in the 1920s and 30s. I know that in the early 19th century there was a Rev. W Carus-Wilson of Casterton Hall, Westmoreland, with a son Rev. C Carus-Wilson of Ramsgate, important enough to get into "Who's Who". (Descendants include an electrical engineer, a Lieutenant Colonel, and a Principal of Birmingham School of Music.) I assumed that John Wilson must have called his son Carus as a sort of stunt, to make an artificial link with his famous namesake! So I am asking three questions. Do these clerical Carus-Wilsons have their origins in Cornwall? Are there biographies? Am I right in thinking that John Wilson of Leicester is not really a blood relation?
