The following is an excerpt from a letter from Kathryn Carter of Tecumseh, OK. I'm sending it to the list as it may ring a bell with someone out there. [2 Feb 1999 Tell Connie not to give up on John CARTER, d.1811, Greene Co., TN. People have searched for the NJ connection for 25 years that I know of. He was in Monongalia Co., VA 1770-78 with the others, and maybe in Hampshire, VA, 1765 with Caleb & Joseph. I think early Hampshire records are at the Virginia State Archives (not W. VA) and they now charge $30 just to open a letter, then further costs for searching and copies, if any. Hampshire Co., WV, P.O. Romney, has probate records back to 1780 but other records only from the 1830s. Hampshire was formed from Frederick Co., VA, 1753 and may hold clues to NJ. I did scan NJ Archives and some other NJ books (not ver many available at that time) for any record on names Caleb, John, Levi, Joseph CARTER - no success. There was a Caleb CARTER of Morris Co., NJ in Frederick Virkus's Compendium of American Genealogy, but he died in NJ. I am not yet UN-convinced that the Caleb CARTER (1787 "disappeared" from Greene, TN) was not a son of the Joseph Sr. who died 1811 there. This man MAY have come from Frederick co., VA. I would certainly like to contact a descendant of Joseph. Connie's Nathan CARTER Jr. may have gone to Ohio because of family, but also for LAND. ***note all the Congress grants and other areas opened for settlement. I have copies of the Am. Revolution pension transcripts for Ephrian and David CARTER of Surry Co., NC if anyone needs them.
