Anyone spot a relative?? Thomas W. CARTER, b. Abt. 1780, d. Oct. 1849 in Jackson Co., IN. He does not show up in the Jeffersonville Land Entries Index, so he didn't buy land when the rest of the Jackson County Carters did. He does not show up on the 1820 U.S. Census for Jackson Co., IN; the only Thomas that could be him is found in Harrison Co., IN in 1820. From the 1840 Census, his wife was born 1800/1810 and had at least eight children; perhaps another one was born in 1841 or 1842. He is listed on the 1830 and 1840 Censuses and lived in Brownstown Twp., Jackson Co., IN. He bought 40 acres of land on 12 Feb 1842. His children were born between 1820 and about 1840. His children (not in any particular order) were: 1. Ann, b. Abt. 1830* in Jackson Co., IN; m. John C. VERMILYA on 12 Dec 1846 in Jackson Co., IN. 2. Eliza, m. William BLODGETT on 13 Feb 1848 in Jackson Co., IN. 3. Robert. 4. George, b. Abt. 1830* in Jackson Co., IN. 5. Joseph, b. Abt. 1832, lived in Brownstown Twp., Jackson Co., IN in 1850. 6. Thomas, b. Abt. 1835, lived with John R. Hamilton in Hamilton Twp., Jackson Co., IN in 1850. 7. Sarah. 8. Jacob. 9. Jane (not sure she belongs), m. to Jacob SHANKS. 10. Henry W., d. 15 Feb 1847 at Camp Page at mouth of Rio Grande.** NOTES: * Based on the U.S. Census of Jackson Co., IN, 1850. ** Found in probate records, p. 207, dated 18 Aug 1848.
