This is my father's CARTER line. I would love to hear from other relatives or anyone who may add to or like to dispute with documentation what I have. This is what is actual documented info ( I will follow with undocumented ): Misc. Estate Records of Crawford Co, Ga., Vol I, by Wm. R. Henry "CARTER, Joel Sr. (decd) 1 nov 1841: Samuel CARTER and Joel CARTER Jr. apptd Adms. Security: John CARTER and Washington C. CLEAVELAND. Bond: $4000. [My Uncle Curtis CARTER, in his 80's and having spent half his life researching our family, says that Samuel and John CARTER are brothers, and that they are also sons of Joel CARTER Sr. He says Joel Jr. is Joel Sr's. grandson, son of John CARTER. This John and Joel Jr. would later move to Pike County AL after Henry Carter's death (Henry is one of John's sons, Joel Jr's brother) living next door to Amanda SANDERS CARTER's father and Henry CARTER's (dcd) father-in-law, Isaac SANDERS.--so we know this much for certain.] Vol II (Annual Returns Book D, pg 195) "CARTER, Joel Sr. dcd 4 Mar 1844: Joel CARTER and Samuel CARTER as Adms made their returns for 1843 & 1844....Vouchers returned showed payments to...Abner CARTER 262.50, Etheldred BOZEMAN 262.50, Mary CARTER 262.50, Eliz. CARTER 262.50, John CARTER 262.50, Abner CARTER as guardian for Stephen CARTERs orphans 262.50, and Samuel CARTER 262.50. [We interpret this equal division as being between the heirs of Joel CARTER, Sr.; Joel CARTER Jr. was not included so he must not be a direct heir. So Joel Sr's. children are: Abner, Mary, Eliz., John, Stephen (dcd), Samuel and Mrs. Etheldred Bozeman.] I also have a copy of the sale of Joel CARTER Sr's. land to settle estate and it is described as being the First Distr. of Houston origianally, now Crawford Co. Henry land sold after his death in 1852 was also in the 1st Distr. As far as I know this is as far back as I have documentation. I want to verify the land lottery records. The 1835 Gold Lottery shows Joel Jr. with land in Crawford Co. Now here is what my uncle has put together..... I. Joel CARTER SR. (b. c 1765 SC???), wife unk* A. John CARTER (b. c1785 SC or GA???-d. 1858 Pike Co., AL)** 1st wife unk, 2nd wife Cynthia Jackson(b. 17 Jul 1804-d 25 May 1875) [I'm not sure if she's where I've got her or where you've got her!!! There's another marriage record in Wilkes Co Ga showing a John CARTER who married a Eliza Caroline KENDRICK 22 Nov 1830--and since this John is buried in the Kendrick Cem. in Troy, Pike Co AL maybe she is the one?] 1. Mary CARTER (1809-GA-d 1860 Pike Co AL), m. Dempsey TOLER 31 Dec. 1826, Crawford Co (I have 3 childrens' names) 2. Joel CARTER Jr. ( 15 Apr1810-GA-d. 18 Dec 1890 Pike Co., AL) 1st wife -Amelia Ann______(There is a marriage record of a Joel CARTER who married an Milly Ann BENTLEY 8 jan 1835 Jones Co.) 2nd wife-Cynthia ROWE , m 12 dec 1841 [between these two wives, Joel Jr. had 15 children-I have names, and dates and spouses on some] 3. Amy CARTER (1810-GA) m. Enoch BRAGG (1810) 23 Dec 1830 [I have 7 children with b., no spouses] 4. Sarah CARTER (1816-GA-d 1860 Crawford Co GA) m.Samuel BENTLEY 14 Nov 1830 [6 children w/ b, no spouses] 5. Nancy Ann (marriage record shows initial N.) CARTER (6 Dec 1816-GA-d 13 Dec 1882 Pike Co AL) m. James T. (Taylor) CURTIS (1814) 11 Jan 1838 [11 children with dates, spouses and several more generations on this family] 6. Henry CARTER (9 Apr 1828Crawford Co GA-d.29 Mar1852 Crawford Co. GA) m. Amanda SANDERS (1829), 18 Jan 1849 ***this is my line-- and it almost died out as Amanda was with child when Henry died ( they had lost a child previously--on 1850 and then gone)...grgrgrandparents a. Henry Sanders CARTER**** (1852-d 1895 Pike Co., AL) m. Emeline Josephine "Sis" BRYAN (1854) [Born in Crawford Co., GA 9 Sept 1852 approx. 6 mos after his father died. I of course have many generations on this family as this is my line] 7. Victoria Eugenia CARTER (?) m. John Freeman [4 children, dates and spouses] 8. John E. CARTER JR (15 Feb1837- d.25 Nov. 1904 Wood Co., TX) m Dorinda WHITEHURST [He was a Primitive Baptist Minister in Wood Co., TX. I have the names of 3 children] 9. Stephen F. CARTER (died 1865 in Civil War) , m Martha WHITEHURST B. Samuel CARTER b. c 1780 SC or GA??? C. Abner CARTER " D. Mrs. Etheldred BOZEMAN " E. Mary CARTER " F. Elizabeth CARTER " G. Stephen CARTER ". There is a Stephen S. CARTER in the Talbot Co. marriage records (nearCrawford & Upson-m. Elizar C. Anthony 5 Sep 1835. Frm Court Records we know Stephen's orphans were Elizabeth & Sarah] > My Uncle believes that Joel Sr. was John "Salt Spring" CARTER's son, b. c 1770's-the exact birth dates are uncertain-from Laurens Co., SC. This John also has a son Benjamin who I believe went to Lincoln Co (then Wilkes) GA and perhaps we descend from him as Joel remains in the 1800 census and in the estate and court records of Laurens Co. through the 1830 census. I would like info on children of Joel CARTER(m Eliz. Young c 1796) of Laurens Co., SC--I know only of his daughter who married Wade Wiatt Puckett 1822 in Laurens Co., SC. Surely there were more children. I would also like info on Benjamin b. c 1770's who possibly went to Wilkes/Lincoln Co Ga late 1790's--childrens' names, etc. Thank you, Cynthia CARTER DYER
