Hi, I'm looking for any information on my GGG grandmother, Eleanor (Elenor?) CARTER of Newark, NJ. According to our (undocumented) family history, she married Peter SMITH, probably in late 1780's, and had a son, Nicholas SMITH, in 1790. Her husband Peter drowned in the Passaic River in 1792. She is said to have remarried a William Hunter in Newark. They may have moved to Cincinatti area in the early 1800's. She *may* have been decsended from a Nicholas CARTER who was in Newtown, Long Island, in the 1650's and then moved to Elizabethtown, NJ in the 1660's. So far I have not been able to find any marriage, birth, death, or other records of any kind for Eleanor or the others. Hoping someone on this list might be able to help.
