Since my recent post to CARTER-L, I discovered an old report that may explain why it has been said that there is a distant cousin relationship between June and Jimmy Carter. I found a coy of a typewritten report in an old filing cabinet of mine by Mrs Julian C. Lane of Atlanta, GA ["Carter Pedigree Documentation"] that was written before 1964 - it still showed a one digit ZIP code for Atlanta - 5 digit codes were introduced in 1963. Hence this was written before Jimmy Carter became famous. It shows Capt. Thomas Carter Jr [1672-1733] and Arabella Williamson (through a son Moore Carter) being 4-great g_parents of Wiley Carter [1798-1864 - Jimmy's 2-great g_father.] Chris Carter wrote me that he was from Peter, son of Thomas and Arabella, but didn't have any reason to think Peter had a brother named Moore. Other current researchers show this Thomas and Arabella as 6-great g_parents of June [also through Peter Moore], but Thomas and Arabella don't appear in Jimmy's line as researched by Kenneth H. Thomas Jr and accepted by Gary Boyd Roberts. These reliable researchers of Jimmy's line place his Moore Carter as son of Thomas Carter [c1650-1719] [wife, Magdalen Moore.] If the old account had been valid, then June and Jimmy would ostensibly be 7th cousins 0 removed [7c0r.] Then I noticed for the first time that Roberts' 1995 ANCESTORS OF AMERICAN PRESIDENTS [p.195], places, through son Daniel Carter, Pres. Theodore Roosevelt as a 5-great g_son of Thomas and Arabella Williamson. Therefore, it appears that June Carter and T. Roosevelt may well be 5c1r. [Chris: Do you claim a cousinship with T. Roosevelt?] Continuing with the Roberts reference (converted to my numbering scheme of the generations of June Carter's ancestry): 9. Thomas Carter Jr = Arabella Williamson 10. Katherine Dale = Thomas Graves of Barford 11. Diana Skipworth of VA = Edward Dale 12. Sir Henry Skipworth, 1st Bt. = Amy Kempe ... 21. Elizabeth de Seagrave = John Mowbray, 4th Baron Mowbray [ancestors of my wife - 22d generation] ... 24. Edward I, King of England (d. 1377) = Phillipa of Hainault From this we might conclude: -June Carter and Chris Carter have a documented royal ancestry -My wife is a documented 19th cousin once removed [19c1r] to June Carter Cash with a similar cousinship to Chris Carter [no big deal - from probability theory, all Caucasians are probably at least 15th cousins - just generally no relevant documentation.] HOWEVER, when Roberts republished this chart in 2004 in ROYAL DESCENTS OF 600 IMMIGRANTS,p. 267, he added the disclaimer that two recent scholarly articles had disputed that Diana Skipworth of VA was the mother of Katherine Dale! This would, of course, break the documentation chain between her and King Edward III. I had better stop while I'm ahead! Regards to all, Theron Smith P.S.
