Diane & Sharon...does your research include any Mullen(s)/Mullin(s)...in TN/KY/VA/WV/NC...or IL...or TX...or AR/MO/KS? I have an Eli Carter Mullen b abt 1822 TN to (given name unknown) Mullen and Hannah (maiden name unknown)...searching for a Mullen/Carter connection in hopes of identifying his parents. By late 1820s, his parents were in IL...by 1830s his parents were in Texas Territory (owned then by Mexican Government)...father Mullen died in TX...about 1836...by 1840, Hannah Mullen and her family were back in IL...from there, they married and scattered in all directions. Any all Mullen/Carter clues gratefully received! Pat
Hi Pat, Please see this list of links: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/%7Emtnties/mlgnlinks.html This is the information on "The Melungeons". This is a mixture race of white/native American/Mediterarian(like Portuguese or Turkish) represented by several surnames in the upper south regions, centered in TN. Currently research is on DNA variants. Certain diseases determine sources in the Middle East. "Mullens" and all other spellings of this surname is most represented. I read where Irish Jim Mullens and Mahala had 20 children! I am a Carter and often see my name on its lists. The history on this "Tri-racial isolated" peoples is not documented well because of prejudice and uneducation. It is getting better. Their history is kept separate and often secretive. I hate that.
