Hi Diane, In 1838 Joel A (20 yrs) and brother, Richard P Carter Jr (17 yrs) migrated from Middle TN to East Forks area, Clinton Co, IL. Their parents and grandparents were already settled there and Uncles helped them get started. One census reported 8 grown men in one household! Well, my ancestor, Joel, soon mar Mary E Cole (also from Middle TN), and took care of youngest brother, Richard P. Then, Richard mar Miss Nancy Phillips about 1841 and they had a girl and a boy. In 1848 at 28 yrs Richard P died of some kind of fever and Nancy followed within the week. The father of Nancy (who was old) supported and raised the two small children. I have a contact name of a descendant of this son. Phillips lived close to Carters to help raise these two orphans in the Washington Co, IL area. Our family will always include the Philips or Phillips descendants! Please write more.
