He's probably from the Giles Carter line, Halifax, Virginia. About six distinct Carter families came from Virginia. In the late 1700's and early 1800's several of John Carter's sons migrated to Tennessee. (John was Giles' third great grandson) From there, at least two (James and Richard) moved to Alabama.
