Hi Richard, What was the locality of the marriage records you listed? Were they all from the same place? I'm particularly interested in the following: > 2. James Carter-Mary Essex, daughter of Joseph > Essex--December 27, 1820 > Surety--Joseph Essex > > 8. Joseph Carter--Sarah Harp, daughter of Joseph > Harp--July 7, 1795 > Surety--Joseph Harp > > 11. Nicholas Carter--Elainey Whitfield, both being > over the age of 21 > years--April 12, 1809 > Surety--Mathew Rhodes > > 12. Nicholas Carter(son of Nicholas Carter)--Rachel > Gardiner, daughter of > Samuel Gardiner--Feb 2, 1818 > Surety-Samuel Gardiner There was a Nicholas Carter who appears to have been one of the first Carters who settled in Vermillion County Indiana. He was in the 1830 census, listed as being over age 45. My James Carter, who was born in Kentucky, was also in Vermillion Co. IN in the 1830's. James also had some kind of connection with a Joseph Carter - maybe father or brother. I know who James' wife was in the 1840's (Marguerite Reffett) but it's always possible that she was not his 1st wife. Nancy __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
