My father was born in Lawrence Co., KY, but was named Oklahoma Lafayette Carter. The reason: He was #12 in a family of 13 children. (Only 6 reached adulthood, and three of those died in their early 20s.) He figured his parents had run out of names by the time he was born (1895) and they allowed the midwife who delivered most of the babies in that remote part of KY to name the new baby. Her son was a sheriff in Oklahoma Territory, and wrote her some exciting stories about Indian raids, etc. She thought it must be an interesting place, so she named the baby Oklahoma. His parents added the Lafayette, after his father's youngest brother. Needless to say, he hated his name, so preferred to be called Oak or Oakley. Lois in California, whose line is: Oakley and Gertrude Carter, William A. and Emily Sisson Carter, James Earl and Nancy Cooksey Carter, John and ? Carter.
