    1. Re: [CARTER-L] James CARTER of Loudoun Co., VA
    2. This looks interesting. I'm looking for family connections to Agnes Carter, who m James Madison Helm (sometimes Helms) in Knox Co OH in 1836. The Helm family lived in Guernsey Co OH at this time, was originally from Frederick Co VA & KY. Agnes & James M Helm moved to Grant Co IN about 1843 and Champaign Co IL about 1854. Agnes approx dates are 1815-1890. In a directory in Champaign, she lists her place of origin as Loudoun Co, and her census entries always give her birthplace as VA. We know almost nothing about her - in the family plot, her gravestone is the only one missing (vandalized years ago, not recovered). I believe they were married by a Universalist minister named Truman Strong (he was Universalist later - not sure about 1835). I haven't been able to connect Agnes Carter Helm to any Carters in Knox Co OH. There are several families, but she doesn't fit in. The state law at the time was that a marriage had to take place in the bride's county of residence. Don't know if that was strictly followed, but Knox Co OH makes no sense for James Helm. One of their sons married a Quaker woman, and one of their grandsons did also; several of their children went to a Quaker boarding school in Indiana, altho they don't seem to have been Quakers themselves. I'm descended from some Carter Quakers (the marriage above) with VA connections but no known link to Agnes Carter. James Madison Helm's brother George Washington Helm m Nancy Carter in Guernsey Co (Baptist minister) in 1833 or 35. Nancy also has a Loudoun Co connection - her father is Levi Carter, who enlisted in the army in 1812 in Loudoun Co. I can't place him with any particular family either. There is good evidence he is not the father of my Agnes Carter, from his estate records in the 1870's, which seem to indicate all their children. -----Original Message----- From: Miriam H.
