Questions regarding the Status of the following family discussion groups: CARTER Family Disucssion Lists HARDIN Family Discussion Lists WALLACE Family Discussion Lists These lists, when I formed them 10 years ago (in 1996) used to be very active. As of late, I rarely see any traffic and don't think there has been a message in weeks. Is it worthwhile keeping these lists active? Have they become obsolete with the advent of the web based message boards of a number of years back and should they be closed down? Even I am not as active in the day to day use & management of these family lists as I used to be. I'm asking because I need your opinion. Please don't be shy, your participation is needed. 3. I always read the messages in the hope that there will be some connection to my CARTER ancestors. Here's a little summary of my Carter line: My grandmother was Bertha Caroline "Carrie" Carter, born 1872 in Jasper Co. Illinois. She was one of (at least) ten children. I'm still searching for information about her sister Ann, who was born in 1865 in IL. Carrie's parents were John Carter, b. 1842 in IL, and Frances Kibler. I have info on two siblings of John: his older brother Solomon, b. abt. 1834 in Indiana, and younger sister Cynthia, b. 1844 in IL. There were other siblings but information is very sketchy. John's father was James Carter, born about 1800 -1810 in KY. I've traced James back to Montgomery County KY. He moved to Vermillion Co. Indiana about 1830 and to Jasper Co. Illinois sometime before 1840. James was married three or four times that I know of: Polly Wagle or Margurite Reffett, Eliza Evans and Jane Cashett. I can't prove it, but I have reason to believe that James Carter's father was Solomon Carter of Montgomery Co. KY. I have very little information about this Solomon Carter, just a couple of clues that indicate he might possibly have been descended from Captain Thomas Carter. Perhaps other list members will offer a similar summary so that we can all get "reacquainted." 3. I can't speak for the Wallace or Hardin lists since I'm not on either. But I don't think the level of activity on the Carter list is all that low. I am on several Rootsweb lists and several have far less activity. Of course, all of us would prefer lots of people posting items of particular interest to ourselves. It just doesn't work that way. Perhaps a roll call would generate some interest. 3. Chuck: I am on both the Carter and Wallace lists. Like many folks, I stay very, very busy and don't often have time to participate actively. I would like to see more activity on both lists but don't feel knowledgeable enough to contribute a great deal. Is there a Wallace DNA project? And I would also like to know who on your Carter list is a participant in the Carter DNA project. I was a Carter by marriage and my son participated in the DNA testing in the hopes we could get past our dead-end. Unfortunately, it presented more questions than answers. For Wallace and Carter researchers, here is a link to a document with a mention of both surnames that may be beneficial to some. 3. For my opinion, the CARTER list is valuable. I don't mind if no emails come through for a week or so. I'm still joined and when someone DOES join the list or mail a message, I look out in the hope my SUSSEX connection will make a mention. My only disappointment I have with the list is most postings are for American families, and I have no interest in that. This is of course totally personal and not a reflection on the list! My ancestors came from Sussex and migrated to Australia. If neither of those are mentioned in the message, I delete it. For my opinion, the CARTER list is still valuable. It isn't that the list isn't relevant or out used its usefulness. I think it is more that people have many more alternatives these days and may not want to be a part of the email swapping format. I don't recommend cancelling the group. Just an Aussie's opinion. Lynette Begg P.O. 3. I suscribe to several Rootsweb lists and this is one of the most active. Even at that, I have not seen a post that I could help or that helps me. I'm patient. If I'm lucky I'll be around another 15 or 20 years and I may find some of the answers I've been looking for in that time. If nothing else, I'll leave some answers for someone else to use. As my wife says, it keeps me off the streets... I'll have to get my ancestral info and post in another note, as I am not at my gen computer. Basically, my family files originate with Richard Carter early 1600s in Yorkshire, England, go thru Barnabus in New Jersey, to Nicholas in New Jersey, Abraham in Indiana, Alpheus in Indiana and Kansas, and end with my paternal Grandmother, Sophia, possibly Sophronia or Saffronia, Carter marrying my Grandpa, Joseph W. Ross in 1908 in Humbolt, Kansas, after her first husband, Charles E. Mosier was killed by a horse he was shoeing. I am presently in England and have never SEEN so many Carters! It is a difficult name to research because there are so MANY of our cousins out there. Be careful what you wish for. My experience has been that the one answer I most want, when it comes only gives me ten more questions to be answered. It can be a Pandora's box. When I initially started on my journey tracing my family background, ancestors, etc, I found these lists very helpful in my endeavors. Have they out lived their usefulness?
